Wow, 32 K’s in 81 AB, that is amazing….. But only 20, so maybe that’s something that can improve with pro experience. If two of the group of Heyward, Johnson, and Hernandez can end up being Major League calibar players (I know Heyward seems a shoe in, but we can’t know for sure until he does it at the big league level) and Schafer can show that he’s here to stay as a long term big leaguer, what a nice problem the Braves will have. Heck, Frenchy may end up the fourth outfielder…
I’ll have to disagree about “Thaaaaaaaaaa Yankees Win” being the most grotesque and obnoxious call in the game.
Ken Harrelson’s “He Gone!” after every damn White Sox strikeout is by far the most redundant, annoying, and elementary piece of garbage I have ever heard. I will never watch a White Sox game because of it.
Okay, ol’ Furman is mainstay at the AJC, but I agree with DOB that the title and article did not match up. Also, i found it hilarious that he wrote the Jordan Schafer is not the lead off type, when he’s led off in the minors, and especially since he led off his first ML game yesterday.
Braveheart (7:35 AM)–I agree. There is a point where you can deal with a younger writer accordingly for writing something like that, but I think Furman has more than paid his debt to society and should be allowed to keep on keepin’ on however long he wants. He’s old, people, have a little heart.
Bobby’s Cox No, Harrelson’s “You can put it on the boooaaarddd….YES!” is hte worst ever, “He Gone!” a close second. Followed by his Timo Perez man crush: “C’mon Timo! C’mon Timo! C’mon Timo!” Yeah, we get wgn up here in Yankeesland land too. It’s horrible. I miss TBS BRAVES Baseball.
Someone asked about 2010 prospects. I think Heyward has the best shot at making the team of the prospects. He is hurt right now with a hamstring or groin strain but he is the most well rounded. The only tool is really lacking is speed but once he gets that big frame moving he isn’t slow. I would put him with Frenchy speed wise. Gorkys needs to add some power while Cody needs to cut down on the strikeouts. Freeman is kind of blocked right now at first but he actually reminds me of Casey in a lot of ways. Great glove, hit for average, might more power than Casey, and isn’t fast at all.
Furman can write as long as he pleases as far as I am concerned. Hate to be morbid, but when football was taken from Bear Bryant, it only took a month, and when June Carter was taken from Johnny, it only took four months.
I had the same thoughts the other day when a beloved local photographer, aged 83 or so, was run out of business by that town’s utilities board he had rented office space from in a neighboring lot since the 40’s. They are building an obnoxious new office building that will make a parking lot out of the building and lot his office is now on and he was given the ‘retire or we’ll rent you a nice little office inside our utilities building’ ultimatum. He sent a heartbreaking letter (hand typed, like all his letters) out to his friends and customers announcing his retirement. I had tears in my eyes when I read the part in the letter where he wrote something like “I’ll probably never see many of you again in this life…” It wasn’t so much that he still did a lot of photography work, but it was his office, he went there every day, friends stopped by to say hello..it gave him a ‘thing he had to do’ every day, you know?
Yea but he was blocked in Atlanta and his value had pretty much peaked off of that performance he had in Arizona Fall League. I think Javy has pitched great for us. I like that trade, right now we would have an even worse record without the great pitching we are getting and Javy is adding to that.
Am I the only one sick of hearing Chipper talk now that he has his contract. He makes comments about Escobar and Schafer’s baserunning. Team leaders handle things behind the scenes. I would love to hear his teamates bash him about his game losing error. Chipper keep things in house. We never heard these comments when we were winning pennants. More hiting less complaining
Whe Cody is ready the Braves will have a good problem. Jordan Schafer(OF), Jeff Franceour(OF), Jayson Heyward(OF), Gorkys Hernandez(OF), Cody Johnson(OF) and Freddy Freeman in 1B. When Gorkys is ready either they trade him or Schafer or platoon in CF. Maybe trade Frenchy when all of this guys are ready.
I wouldn’t start talking about moving outfielders just yet. With as much uncertainty as there is about Francoeur (just a month ago, half of Atlanta wanted him to be DFA), Schafer (he’s still developing), Heyward (he hasn’t played a game above A ball), and Gorkys (he’s young and had some trouble last season), maybe we should wait a year or two before we start trying to blocked outfielders.
But, agreed, if everyone pans out like they should, that’s 5 good outfielders. One or two for trade bait, or use Johnson to take over Norton’s role on the bench (I hear Johnson isn’t that great in the field). Then let the other four battle it out for starting time.
In response to the folks who think that a farm system is supposed to develop player for the big club (forget who said it, doesn’t matter)–I would consider trading a prospect for an established big league player a success for the farm system, wouldn’t you? We’re still getting value out of our farm. Take the Hudson trade, for instance. Who cares if Dan Meyer and Charles Thomas never really amounted to anything? We still got an ACE pitcher out of the deal–and who cares if he didn’t come out of our farm? He is still our player.
Andy Marte would be another great example. Never amounted to squat, but we not only got two great years of Edgar Renteria out of him, but we also got what appears to be six good years of Jair Jurrjens and a top prospect in Gorkys Hernandez, who can either help the big club or start a whole new cycle.
Besides, we’ve drafted and developed Kelly Johnson, Tom Glavine, Chipper, Francouer, Schafer, B.Jones, McCann, Yunel (well, signed, but we’re his only org.), Prado, Sammons, Moylan, and JoJo (off the top of my head) out of our 25-man roster. Soriano, Gonzo, Vazquez, Jurrjens, and Kotchman were acquired using pieces from our farm system–so it’s still producing value. So we’ve got, what Lowe, GA, Ross and Kawakami as free agent signings, along with a few 400K long relief arms? Not too shabby, I think. Add that to the fact that we have a fully stocked farm system ready to produce a ton of value (and a top-10 pick coming up), and I’d say this organization is in great shape for the future, whatever the outcome of this season might be.
The worst HR call in baseball is the Marlins’ Dave Van Horne and I say this as a Marlin fan (2nd to the Braves of course).
He shouts UP, UP and AWAY to the tune of the long dead Fifth Dimension singing that god awful tune. Talk about drugs and the sixties, man you had to have some LSD to tolerate the lyrics on that song. I bet even Dave O’Brien doesn’t have anything good to say about this:

Up, up and away

Wayne, I saw Johnson play in 2006 in a GCL game (Locke also pitched too). I didn’t see any balls hit to him or anything like that, but watching him run (and swing the bat) he seemed a bit…clumsy. Average speed, I’d say, based on a very limited viewing. I’m sure the player development folks are working for a fix, though!

Thanks bravos2249. Frenchy looked good in the 4 hole the other night. Lets see if he can repeat. I like Omar at leadoff compared to our other options anyway.
Lineup makes sense to me; Prado needs some PT, and Wandy Rodriguez has been death to lefties this year (.077 BA). So makes sense to move Schafer back down in the lineup. He’s the only lefty in the lineup (except Jo-Jo).
Just a feeling: I suspect we’ve seen the last of KJ at leadoff for a while.
I read your LCD vs. plasma tv comparison from Saturday am. Wow, when I asked you your thoughts on the subject, I didn’t mean to put you through so much trouble. That was really nice of you to do that. That was quite the comprehensive comparison. So much so, that I copied it, pasted it in on a notepad and saved it in a folder. When the time comes, I’ll read it again. If I had to buy one right now, I’d probably buy the plasma (I don’t play any games on tv). I can’t think of any question I would have, that you didn’t already cover. Great job and thanks alot!
We’ll win today… 4-2. Prado playing, forget about it! He’ll go 2-4 with a single, triple, and 2 RBI’s. Francoeur and Chipper will each hit solo shots. Reyes will be good again.
decent glove TPM? Are you kidding me? Please go watch a game before you talk. He isn’t a big bat but he will hold his own with a .285 13hr 75rbi season. His glove is gold glove caliber. The most errors he has ever made in a season is 3.
I don’t know if Bobby’s platooning him but the fact that Kotchman’s not playing either speaks volumes about Wandy’s pitching not hitting. Cause good pitching can beat good hitting. Now I do not understand why KJ didn’t start against Hampton but oh well.
SteveMcP-Sorry Dude, but even had he not been traded, Flowers would NOT be on the big team this season. He only played at A ball and wouldn’t be called up any more than Heyward or Freeman would be at this point. Besides, I’m thinking that Vazquez has pretty much done all that has been asked of him so far. I’m just not seeing this as a bad trade, no matter Flower’s potential-and at this point, potential is ALL he has.
“I’m just not seeing this as a bad trade, no matter Flower’s potential-and at this point, potential is ALL he has.”
Agreed. People overvalue prospects. They look at a guy like Flowers and think “man, if this guy plays to his potential, he’ll be good”. What they forget to factor in is what happens when a guy doesn’t play to his potential, which happens frequently.
When a prospect is performing better than his expected long-term potential, you sell, just like in the stock market.
cheld-People are so enamored with Flowers because he hit a couple of HR’s in The Arizona Fall League. However, what they fail to realize is that the AFL is a hitters’ league and Flowers didn’t have to face Tommy Hanson.

decent glove TPM? Are you kidding me? Please go watch a game before you talk. He isn’t a big bat but he will hold his own with a .285 13hr 75rbi season. His glove is gold glove caliber. The most errors he has ever made in a season is 3.

So Infante (second) and Prado (first) are starting today. Does Cox know what stats are?
KELLY JOHNSON, 2009
vs. Left: .308/.419/.654, 1.073 OPS, 2 homeruns (26 at-bats)
vs. Right: .174/.255/.283, .538 OPS, 1 homerun (46 at-bats)
Johnson also hit .333 (in 150 at-bats) against left-handers in 2008 and had a higher OPS against them than right-handers that year too.
Sure, platoon him and make his starts against right-handers. That really makes just a whole lot of sense….
