Hmm…was is Zeke Spruill’s turn to go tonight for Rome? He was listed as probable starter but didn’t make the start…wonder if something is up with him? Has been very good so far in Rome–a 1.71 ERA and 20K’s in 21 IP…and only 1 BB.
For the last time,
When small market teams have stud, MLB-ready prospects, they can’t afford to keep them in the minor leagues. This is a universal baseball truth that can’t be contested. When Kyle Blanks is MLB ready, which won’t be long, either he’s getting moved or Adrian Gonzalez is getting moved (they both are incapable of playing anywhere but 1B). Now, if you’re the Padres penny-pinching ownership/front office, which one are you going to move? The one who makes $400K for 3 years after you call him up and is under team control for 3 additional years or the one who makes an average of $4.4 million for the next 3 seasons (assuming the club option is exercised), isn’t under team control beyond 2011, and in all likely-hood will depart through free agency at a price your organization won’t be able to match after his contract expires? Given the way their organization works, I think we all know what choice they’ll make.
Assuming Kyle Blanks doesn’t completely forget how to hit or suffer a devastating injury, the Padres’ options for resolving their crowded 1B situation when Blanks is ready include:
1) Let Kyle Blanks rot in the minor leagues or on the bench while they wait for Gonzalez’s contract to expire (either exercising the option or not) and allow him to leave via FA netting 2 draft picks.
2) Somehow move Kyle Blanks.
3) When they’re confident Blanks is ready, trade Adrian Gonzalez and get more value than the 2 draft picks they’d net as FA compensation while decreasing payroll and decreasing production by a somewhat negligible amount (Kyle Blanks is no Adrian Gonzalez, but he is really, really good).
I know he’s a popular player. I know he’s an all-star. I know he’s signed to a very team-friendly contract. I know he’s their Brian McCann.
However, when Kyle Blanks is ready, they’ll be looking to get value for Adrian Gonzalez. They’re that stingy and content with mediocrity. After all, they’re a re-building club. You don’t re-build with 29 year-olds, you rebuild with players yet to hit their baseball prime. Getting a few of those for Adrian Gonzalez to complement the group of young players they’ve got (Blanks included) once Blanks is ready makes all the sense in the world.
The question is, when will the Padres feel comfortable with Blanks at 1B every day? I’m guessing that will occur somewhere between July 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010. If they do decide that they want to go with Blanks, Gonzalez will be moved. Of course, maybe they never feel comfortable with Blanks at 1B and don’t move Gonzalez. Though given their stinginess and willingness to be a mediocre organization, I doubt that will happen.
Damn, I think the blog ate my post…let’s try again

PWHjort, tired of arguing it (but here I am, ha!). Just one point: I think you underestimate the Padres. They’re not a high-payroll franchise, of course, but except for this year when they had a pending sale of the team and sought to cut payroll, they’re not the Marlins either. And they’ve won 2 division titles in the last four years, which is more than the Braves can say.
Who knows what they’ll do at 1B (you certainly don’t though you seem to think you do), but it’s a complete shot in the dark to suggest the Braves, who have an adequate 1B now, and a very good one in the pipeline, will be involved.

You do make a good point about them not being the Marlins. Simply making 3+ million dollars in the Marlins organization makes you trade bait. This isn’t the case in the Padres’ organization, though when you’ve got a cheaper, younger replacement waiting in the wings, it probably does.
It has more to do with the fact that they are (or should be) a rebuilding organization and selling your veterans for prospects is what you do when you’re rebuilding. Taking a chunk out of your productivity right now and investing it in your future is pretty much the M.O. of every rebuilding organization. Lets be honest, they’re not going anywhere with the group they’ve got right now, so taking a chunk out of their productivity right now is a no-risk move.

Brava, brava!!!!!!!! I can see what you’ve been working on our night off.
My family enjoyed a lovely 4-course meal, and I’ve just finished filing away some random Braves baseball cards I’ve picked up over the past 6 months or so including, but not limited to: Dwayne Henry, Mike Heath, Raul Mondesi, Gerald Perry, Armando Reynoso, Pete Smith.
Lots of people are serious collectors, I just like to pick up any and all Braves. There are so many interesting and really cool cards out there. Talk about taking a walk down Braves memory lane looking thru the albums………..
Yea, I like Hanson in Gwinett. I was there last weekend, and I have to say, it’s an impressive minor league stadium. It’ll give him the big league environment while allowing him to work on his pitch counts. Beer is still way too expensive though.
TnBrian (7:20 pm): “DOB, I was one of the many calling Sexson a possible Brave here soon. Little did I realize those AWFUL numbers he’s put up since the summer of ‘07…kinda embarrassed to suggest that.”
So why the heck didn’t you take the mere two minutes to check his stats BEFORE spouting off like And Idiot?
‘Cause the latter takes only two seconds?
You should be embarrassed.
(But I am encouraged that you have the capacity — there may be hope for you yet.)
Shamus Thacker: “We need a legit base-stealer to make things happen. That should have been as high a priority as any during the off-season. Otis Nixon could STILL outrun ALL the current Braves. I’d put cash on it!”
Id bet ya he could out-drug them also
Why doesn’t one of the AJC reporters just pick up a phone and give Richie Sexson a call. Let’s find out if he is interested in playing for the Braves.henry aaronoff
I wonder how much longer the Braves will stick with Kawakami. Hansoon appears ready. Soon we will see if the Braves care more about wining or about money. I believe day in and day out Hanson gives us a better chance of wining than Kawakami
Agreed, Rob. I believe if Hanson could give quality outings later on in the season it would be worth bringing him up now. Kawakami having shoulder “fatigue” after a few games is pathetic, what is he going to do in the dog days of summer? Bring up Hanson and let him start in the five spot. With this horrible offense we aren’t going to the playoffs this year anyway, might as well get him some experience.

We need our version of Brian McCann.
Sure do…I’m ready for May 8th. So, here’s a little remake of Jimmy Buffett’s Come Monday:
Played the games up there in DC
Lookin’ for the way that you used to see
You had a contact lens on; I guess it never did get you back to where you should be
But, BMac, I didn’t know
That you would be DL’d, so
Come on May; It’ll be alright
Come on May; then you should have your sight
I’ll spend these 15 days in a brown [hecky] haze
And I just want you back by my side.
Yes, it’s been a long April
Your hitting stroke, you just couldn’t gain
Now you’re DL’s with an eye problem
Something no one could explain
And your av’rage was down so low
That’s the reason I just let you go
Come on May; It’ll be alright
Come on May; then you should have your sight
I’ll spend these 15 days in a brown [hecky] haze
And I just want you back by my side.
I can’t help it BMac; your that much a part of us now
Remember that night up in Filly when we thought there was no room for doubt?
Wish you coulda played up in Cincy
I know that you hit well up there
But when you’ve got all your eyesight
Oh mann, you cann hit anywhere
This DL stint has worn me quite thin
I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!
Come on May; It’ll be alright
Come on May; then you should have your sight
I’ll spend these 15 days in a brown [hecky] haze
And I just want you back by my side.

Well after getting through that inning with just 12 pitches, we may see Hanson go 6+ after all. Seriously doubt it though.
Still, it’s another pitching line that will make the stat crunchers drool. So far, 5 IP, 8ks, 0 ER, 3 Hs, 2 BBs

Actually, Sexson had good splits against lefthanded pitchers last year. I am not sure, but I think he might be a head case.
If he wan??d to play, he might be worth a flier??
Just sayin’

Why doesn’t one of the AJC reporters just pick up a phone and give Richie Sexson a call. Let’s find out if he is interested in playing for the Braves.
