If Francoeur’s BABIP stays high this season, should the Braves sell high during the offseason? That’s a really tough one for me. I certainly don’t think the Braves can sign him to a long-term deal off of a good 2009.
Jeff321 (2:56 pm): “I immediately noticed Ross played good defense and had some pop.”
Of course.
Immediately.
Even though he hit .175/.267/.425 in Spring Trainig, fifth among all Braves catchers with at least 10 ABs. (Clint Sammons? .379/.419/.793.) The only catcher Ross outslugged was Boscan.
Honestly Frank, please tell me you’re kidding. Frank Thomas can’t play everyday, can’t play defense, and bats for a mediocre average. Only upside is the homers, that at this stage of his carrer is mediocre to his standards.

Sure… if you don’t allow runners to score, nothing else (as a pitcher) matters. But I’d defy you to show me a pitcher who is successful for any length of time allowing 2 baserunners per inning.
I’m not hating on Bennett – I was all for keeping him as part of the ‘pen – but his pitches are up and he’s living on the edge so far. Hope he can turn it around before reality catches up with him.
I don’t think Bennett is exactly on the bubble (Parr would be my choice for being sent down if Campillo can recover from his ‘dead arm’) but the hits and walks have not helped Bennett keep inherited runners from scoring. Atlantans don’t really need to be disgusted by the Braves not being on TBS. Rather, it’s going to be those around the country that are annoyed, by no longer having regular, “free” access to the Braves on TV.
For me, even though I am now an Atlantan, it’s sad. I am a Braves fan who grew up in KY, like so many others, watching Dale Murphy and the Braves on TBS.
Fortunately, by the time the Braves were squeezed off of TBS, I lived here, so I now get all 162 games. But, I’m soon going to move again, and will be without the Braves (without paying extra, which I probably will) for the first time ever!
Now, as far as “disgust” goes, there was some upheaval in the South, early last season, as many of the local cable companies in states like Alabama, Mississippi, etc, were unaware of the Braves no longer being on TBS. People were still getting the Fox Sports games, but not the Peachtree TV (the former WTBS) games. Even though this was well publicized, the cable companies, as usual, sat on their hands, waited for the season to start, and fielded call after call as the Braves home opener against Pittsburgh was not available to literally millions around the South who were actually in the Braves’ viewing area. This did get taken care of during the first week.
Now, as far as bringing the Braves back, remember, the Braves are no longer owned by Time Warner/Turner Broadcasting. Liberty Media is the owner, and the rationale for televising the Braves on the Superstation is not what it was when Ted Turner, owner of both the Braves and Turner Broadcasting, desired to pump his team across the nation on TBS.
Major League Baseball has squeezed the superstations, making it less cost effective to televise MLB games. Plus, unlike in the late 70’s and early ’80’s when every market didn’t have a local team being pumped onto their TV’s on cable, people throughout the country don’t need the Braves on TV, to have a team to follow.
While there may be some markets that don’t have a team, I’m not aware of what they are. So today, you have a “local” team on cable, plus games on ESPN and MLB network, plus Fox games (which are regionally driven) on Saturdays.
So, while it is sad to not have the Braves on nationally for those who don’t live in the local viewing area, it is extremely doubtful that TBS and Liberty Media will decide that it is economically feasible to return the Braves to the Superstation, even for a limited package of games.
Moby Grape, I didn’t say anything about Cox actually MAKING trades. I said he wanted to trade him. In other words, it was fine with him if Wren traded Escobar in the Peavy deal.
would you like to venture an opinion on Miller vs. Wheeler vs. Matzek? I’m reading that a lot of people think we’ll take Zack Wheeler. (STEVE from OH)
truthfully? No. Just not enough info. Can’t tell speeds, can’t see what different pitches they have and how they throw them. Sorry. They all look decent, how many do they think will be available when the Braves draft? I guess I’d put Wheeler last, but like I said that’s an awful small sample
cabravesfan… I don’t understand why Fox is blacking out your, and others, 1:00 games, when their game is 4:oo. They don’t do that here. But what is even more mystifying, to me, is that your “regional” game is the Yankees vs. Red Sox? I didn’t realize that Fox considers you and I to be in the same region.
According to DirecTV, FOX actually holds the broadcast rights to all the Saturday day games (i.e. any game that starts before..5:00?) so they can choose what game they want on the main network. So they black out their regional channels everywhere except the region they are in..makes no sense to me either
cabravesfan … so you’re saying that you can see Saturday night games, then? If so, then there’s no day games until June 27. The Braves and Red Sox, ARE the Fox game, on that day. Although, you’ll probably see Seattle vs. the Giants.
Hey, don’t go out of your way, but if you happen to see who the Packers draft, let me know, please.
(2:12 am): “What are the chances that Bobby switches up the lineup tomorrow? Seems that this team can’t score any runs that aren’t gifted to them. What about putting Prado, Infante, Brandon Jones in the lineup? Maybe hitting Jordan Schafer up in the lineup…maybe 1 or 2.”
(12:57 pm): “Dont tell me its the same….we only score on walks lineup…??”
Yeah, I get the night games, but typically I do not get the east coast Game of The Week (unless, apparently, Red Sox/ Yankees because everyone wants to watch the Red Sox/ Yankees, right?) So I would either get the Seattle/SF game (That sounds like a winner ) or whatever Dodgers or Angels game is on…kinda sucks.
You are a Packers fan??? And I was just starting to like you! Oh well, I guess nobody’s perfect!
Moby Grape – Nothing happens on this team without Cox’s approval. The only reason Boyer got booted is because Cox can’t stand embarrassment from the press. When Cox gets called out on things (very rarely) you’ll see action. (Otherwise its just business as usual.)
Notice how quick Garrett Anderson hit the DL? Right. That was Bowman who dropped the snappy comment.. Next thing ya know its history.
I admit to having gotten mildly intrigued by Red Sox-Yankees early this decade; so much so that I completely flip-flopped in 2003, and began to cheer for the Yankees instead of the Sox.
But, the deluge of Yankees-Red Sox has ruined it for me.
As I get older, I actually find myself more interested in various teams, players, games, etc.; but, Yankees-Red Sox does not represent much of a “variation.”
It’s gotten tired. But, I don’t completely blame the networks. I also blame MLB for scheduling 19 of these “treasures” each season.
I miss TBS elevising the Braves, too, but mainly because now I have to listen to the other team’s announcer much more than previously.
The Extra Innings package has televised all the Braves’ games so far, with the exception of the Fox Saturday before 7 rule. Extra Innings costs $168 for the season-less than I would spend if I went to one game-much less than if I went to Fenway to see the Braves.
If anything, Cox and Chipper might have been big reasons Escobar wasn’t traded. Cox has always publicly supported Escobar, calling him a future All Star and the like. Chipper also went to bat pretty hard for Escobar when those Peavy talks were going on, saying he considered Escobar the best SS in the NL, or something to that effect.
The Yankees and Red Sox are generating the revenue for the sport. The merchandise of those two teams account for over 40% of all merchandise sold in the majors. That’s why we’re always subjected to them. No different than the NFL always subjecting us to the Cowboys and Steelers, NCAA subjecting us to Duke and Carolina in basketball, NCAA subjecting us to USC, Notre Dame and the SEC in football, NBA subjecting us to Kobe and Lebron, NASCAR subjecting us to Dale, Jr. and Jeff Gordon, and so on and so forth.
nolie, it’ll probably be Wheeler and Miller available, I don’t expect Matzek to last to us (he’s my preference). At least one of Aaron Crow and Kyle Gibson will probably be available too, but I’m inclined to steer clear of them because I haven’t read too many good things about their mechanics, and I don’t like what I see either.
I agree on Tate. I’d rather take a pitcher (personal preference) but I don’t really want to “waste” a #7 pick on a toolsy projection-based OF. No complaints if they do take him, but I’d like the pitcher.
cabravesfan …. Looks like I exposed a flaw. Oh well, you would’ve found out eventually. Football became a dirty word for me during the last season. The Packers lost 7 games by 4 points or less. It reminded me of the Braves and their 29 straight, 1 run consecutive road losses, last year. You should have heard all the negative yelling and hissy fits I had to listen to last year. I couldn’t stand it. It was all done by me, but I still couldn’t stand it.
BTW, I don’t really know the alternative Fox games on the 27th. I just made up the Seattle/Giants because it sounded so much like a winner. It would be funny if it actually is that game.
Braveheart-And we can expect the same thing to an even greater extent this year due to the economic downturn and the almost inevitable decrease in revenue. They’ll push whoever helps to maintain a financial status quo.
Yeah, I’m like you and a lot of others…(while growing up a Royals fan) also watched Murph and the Braves on TBS and then of course, into the 14 year division title run.
I’m a baseball fan first tho. I watch whoever’s playing on ESPN, Fox and now the TBS Sunday Game of the Week.
Even with the Royals not making it to the World Series in 86, I watched and pulled for the Red Sox….same thing in 88 with the A’s & Dodgers.
You obviously didn’t watch much of the 49ers last season…there was much swearing and text-cursing with my cousin. The Offensive Genius (Mike Martz) decided JT O’Sullivan was a viable NFL Quarterback for the first several games and that the 49ers should be a pass happy team, dispite the fact that our best player is our running back…It got ugly until they named Mike Singletary head coach and the team started playing well
nolie, it’ll probably be Wheeler and Miller available (STEVE from OH)
from what little I’ve seen I’d take Miller over Wheeler. Matzek would be my first choice too, partly cause he’s a lefty and if he falls a bit short there is usually a demand from another team for a live body that throws from the post side
I understand that Michael Crabtree is fast. I understand that he has good hands. I get it. But the 49ers have a talented, young receiver that is oign to be very good. What they do NOT have is a right side of the offensive line! THEY GAVE UP 55 SACKS LAST YEAR! WHAT GOOD IS CRABTREE GOING TO DO WITH OUR F*ING QUARTERBACK LAYING FLAT ON HIS BACK???? DAMNIT SCOT MCCLOUGHAN THIS IS WHY I HATE YOU! We NEED O-LINE HELP!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT???? ARRGGHHHH!
your crap about Esco and Peavy and Cox is nothing but board BS. Cox has praised him any number of times. Your hatred is showing you in an unfavorable light …again. on both Cox and Chipper.
Frank from KS, 4:16 pm, “As for not being a Atlanta resident….has there been any discust in and around Atlanta with the Braves not being on TBS anymore?
I seriously believe they need to bring them back on television, somehow.”
The days when TBS began broadcasting most Braves game was a magical time in history. Ernie Johnson, Pete Van Wieran, Skip Caray in the broadcast booth. Every win was a cause for celebration (because there were so few of them).
Unfortunately, those days are gone forever, except in our memories.
Just putting the Braves back on TBS would not bring back that magic.
nolie, thanks. Glad to hear you opinions. What about Wheeler don’t you like? I’ve read a lot of good things about him. 91-95 fastball with a good curve. I liked his mechanics from the side view of Keith Law’s video.
Keith Law had Miller at 92-94, touching 95 and 96 on the gun, with an “inconsistent” curve.
Sorry to ask so much based on so little info, but I’m curious.
No, Jeff, I think nolie’s got your argument pegged for what it really is…board BS. And I suspectthat is your motivation for asking him to mind his own business, not the fact that you think he’s sticking up for Moby (who is more than capable of attacking your feeble argument).
Thank god for the radio (Lol). Have been able to listen to the last two, three games on radio and like the pairing of Jim Powell and Don Sutton.
I just wished our cable provider here (which used to be Cox Communications before they were bought out, at least here by Allegiance Communications) in Kansas would have Peachtree tho or even the MLB network…but they have neither.

Yep, makes me think dragging Frank Thomas out of mothballs somewhere and sticking him at 1B for the Braves would be a great idea.

Frank from KS,
Atlantans don’t really need to be disgusted by the Braves not being on TBS.

According to DirecTV, FOX actually holds the broadcast rights to all the Saturday day games (i.e. any game that starts before..5:00?) so they can choose what game they want on the main network.
