Frank, Kotchman’s hitting .300 and playing terrific defense.
Yep, makes me think dragging Frank Thomas out of mothballs somewhere and sticking him at 1B for the Braves would be a great idea.
Loaf Garret on a blackberry from the DL
April 25th, 20093:47 pm
Come on Bennet, this is not the time to try and make it interesting..the draft starts in 10 minutes dude.
P-Town Brave (Calling For Schafer To Leadoff)
Look at my subname and you’ll find my answer to your poll question…
Great game today, lets finish it off tomorrow w/ a strong performance from the Asian Sensation!
Oh…and here’d be my everyday lineup:
April 25th, 20093:48 pm
Does Jeff know how goofy that chaw looks?
Mark in PA-
I actually think that Matt Diaz is the emergency catcher…beileve he played some in college (someone please correct me if I am wrong)
Run Heap Run
Dragging him out of the mothballs? Good one.
Hilarious on the “dragging out of mothballs” comment…
Then again, shouldn’t that be saved for our own Tom Glavine?
If Francoeur’s BABIP stays high this season, should the Braves sell high during the offseason? That’s a really tough one for me. I certainly don’t think the Braves can sign him to a long-term deal off of a good 2009.
HI my name is Garret Anderson and Im a flop!
April 25th, 20093:49 pm
OMG fire him… (thats what some people would be saying)
I dont think Frenchy has earned the Cleanup spot…Probably prefer Kotch there, for now anyway. No good guys for that spot with no 40 HR man tho.
April 25th, 20093:50 pm
Anyway, it’s time to get ready for the draft.
Good win today, fellas. Let’s get a sweep tomorrow.
TnJeff04 (née MFinBrian321)
Jeff321 (2:56 pm): “I immediately noticed Ross played good defense and had some pop.”
Even though he hit .175/.267/.425 in Spring Trainig, fifth among all Braves catchers with at least 10 ABs. (Clint Sammons? .379/.419/.793.) The only catcher Ross outslugged was Boscan.
You are SO smart.
Honestly Frank, please tell me you’re kidding. Frank Thomas can’t play everyday, can’t play defense, and bats for a mediocre average. Only upside is the homers, that at this stage of his carrer is mediocre to his standards.
Mark in PA
Thank you, ma’am.
Ballgame! Braves Win! What a double pits to chesty afternoon!
Braves win! Woot!
April 25th, 20093:51 pm
wow- Flyers just scored 2 goals in under a minute- ugh
Why is Bennett on the bubble Couch Tater?
see ya tomorrow!
Cushing as our first pick………..do eeeet!
April 25th, 20093:52 pm
Some nerds that come on this thing will be none to happy that they have nothing to analyze and complain about with the game today.
Bennet: 9IP, 1.00ERA…y would he be the guy on the bubble?
Chipper & Yunel at (slight) cross purposes, leading the blow-out in RBI’s. Who was it said a little tension wouldn’t hurt the club?
Bennett has an ERA of 1.00, but has given up 16 hits and 2 walks (18 baserunners) in 9 innings. How do you do that?
However you do it, I’m guessing you can’t do it for long.
Anyway, great win today. A sweep and winning road trip would be fantastic!
Jef Bennet closes it out with a K, with two runners on. Braves win!
April 25th, 20093:54 pm
DOB, we’re renting some movies later tonight and hopefully The Wrestler is in and I’ll rent Fargo to see if my mind has changed on it now that I’m a little older.
“LA Woman” …. You’re correct. Diaz is the 3rd catcher, if necessary.(I hope it doesn’t become necessary)
April 25th, 20093:55 pm
I’d just like to say before all is said and done that I totally called this.
I said we’d light up Arroyo and damn it all if I wasn’t right. And I didn’t even get to watch more than the last inning but I called it.
I heard the first couple innings on radio and discovered to my lack of surprise that the Braves were following my orders.
You all owe me a thousand Cracker Jacks. Not boxes of, a thousand individual Cracker Jack popcorn nut thingies. Ya’ll better get on that, pronto!
Chad Pronto… get it? I kid.
Make-It-Up-Boy Jeff321 (2:50 pm): “Escobar is just a stud. And to think Bobby Cox wanted to trade him.”
Oh, really? Cox wanted to, huh?
April 25th, 20093:56 pm
I kind of equate baserunners allowed and batting average the same. The goal is to keep people from crossing the plate if you are a pitcher and to cross the plate if you are a better.
I hope we don’t need him either but it would be kinda amusing to see him back there in a blow out, just for fun
April 25th, 20093:59 pm
That was a good game, boys!
mbatl’s got my back.
“I kind of equate baserunners allowed and batting average the same.” – Heath
Sure… if you don’t allow runners to score, nothing else (as a pitcher) matters. But I’d defy you to show me a pitcher who is successful for any length of time allowing 2 baserunners per inning.
I’m not hating on Bennett – I was all for keeping him as part of the ‘pen – but his pitches are up and he’s living on the edge so far. Hope he can turn it around before reality catches up with him.
April 25th, 20094:00 pm
I don’t think Bennett is exactly on the bubble (Parr would be my choice for being sent down if Campillo can recover from his ‘dead arm’) but the hits and walks have not helped Bennett keep inherited runners from scoring. He is supposed to be the ‘ground ball’ pitcher so Bobby can bring him in with runners on base and get a double play.
April 25th, 20094:02 pm
This sucks though.
Kotchman fouled that ball down the left field line in the first inning of the first game in Pittsburg and missed by an inch. It probably would have won the game the way JJ pitched and if one of those idiots could have gotten a hit on Wednesday in the 9th we easliy could have won this road trip already.
I was getting some heavy deja vu at the beginning of this road trip. I thought we’d be a good road team this year and it looked like 2008 all over again. Those back to back one run wins were a sight for sore eyes. We just have to keep this up. No reason to get shut out again.
I realize it’s probably going to happen but I don’t want to see any more games like those first two in Pittsburg.
I’m hard to please it would seem.
Hey I can actually listen to the post game! Whoo Hoo!
Frank from KS
April 25th, 20094:04 pm
DOB re: your 3:46 pm & Tomas re: your 3:50 pm
Well….what I was thinkin’ about what the lack of a difference maker in the line-up (ala McGriff, Big Cat) or in the Dodger’s case…Manny, for example.
Kotchman’s more of a Sid Bream-type 1st baseman and the Braves had a nice backup for 1st base during his time….Brian Hunter.
Jeff321 (1:38 pm): “I guess Lowe just told Chipper how he felt about Escobar getting hit. And I guarantee Chipper won’t have a damn thing to say about Lowe.”
I think Lowe was addressing himself to the Reds, you shameless, hateful Idiot, not to Chipper.
If Escobar hadn’t blown it, Vazquez could have hit Votto last night.
Sounds like a great game, wish I could have seen it. Thank you Fox!! Since you blacked out the game I wanted to see at 1 o’clock, I’ll be sure to watch your game at 4 o’clock. Yeah, that makes sense!
April 25th, 20094:05 pm
Gotta love Matthew Stafford’s sense of humor…his name is announced, he gets booed by the Detroit faithful, and he laughs He’s going to need that playing for that mess of a franchise
April 25th, 20094:06 pm
yeah, it’s great pitching by our guy when another team fails like that, but %^$#*&%# hitting by the Braves when the Braves fail. Makes a lot of sense alright
April 25th, 20094:07 pm
you ever think that Chipper knows more about the situation than we do? He’s the leader of the team and I guarantee you that Escobar took to heart what Chipper had to say.
I love that FOX claims it shows “regional” Saturday Game of The Week matchups, blacks out everything else so you will watch your local game and I get…Yankees vs. Red Sox from Boston. Thanks Again FOX for your impecable logic and great compassion for us fans!
April 25th, 20094:08 pm
cabravesfan – toss me a bone here…I haven’t followed the draft at all..Why is Stafford getting booed? Are the fans trying to get him used to playing in Detroit- or did they want someone else to go there? Just curious…
April 25th, 20094:10 pm
Jeff321 (1:10 pm): “I have lost all respect for Chipper Jones. (Not that I respected him much before running his mouth about Yunel.)”
Chipper says “Thank you”. I’m sure that’s a load off his mind, worrying what a hateful little idiot like you might think.
The crowd is mostly Giants and Jets fans. They’re going to boo everyone, including their own team’s picks.
April 25th, 20094:11 pm
Hey, at least it’s in Fenway…(Lol).
April 25th, 20094:12 pm
a lot of people didn’t like the pick, for whatever reason, but the Lions need so much help that anyone they drafted was going to bring out the “What are they doing?? We really need help at [insert position]!” It’s just part of the draft, someone will always be unhappy with their team’s pick (just wait until the 49ers draft at #10 and you will probably get me ranting pretty good)
April 25th, 20094:13 pm
see also what treehouse said…I have watched the first round for the last couple of years and I have yet to hear the Jets fans cheer for any of their picks
April 25th, 20094:16 pm
Oh and btw….the TBS Sunday Game of the Week tomorrow is Phils @ Marlins.
As for not being a Atlanta resident….has there been any discust in and around Atlanta with the Braves not being on TBS anymore?
I seriously believe they need to bring them back on television, somehow. I mean, WGN still has the Cubs and White Sox.
April 25th, 20094:17 pm
DOB any chance of finding out who won the club house pool of when Norton would get his first hit?
April 25th, 20094:18 pm
Bobby Cox wanted to trade him (Jeff321)
ah Bobby doesn’t make trades, Wren does. All that crap about Bobby was typical board trash speculation.
April 25th, 20094:27 pm
Run Heap Run: How ’bout Escobar for player of game? he and Chipper each had a homer and four RBIs, but Escobar had three hits, reached base four times (HBP), and scored three runs.
April 25th, 20094:30 pm
“yeah, it’s great pitching by our guy when another team fails like that, but %^$#*&%# hitting by the Braves when the Braves fail. Makes a lot of sense alright” -nolie
That’s the formula I use. What’s the problem?
April 25th, 20094:31 pm
Frank from KS,
Atlantans don’t really need to be disgusted by the Braves not being on TBS. Rather, it’s going to be those around the country that are annoyed, by no longer having regular, “free” access to the Braves on TV.
For me, even though I am now an Atlantan, it’s sad. I am a Braves fan who grew up in KY, like so many others, watching Dale Murphy and the Braves on TBS.
Fortunately, by the time the Braves were squeezed off of TBS, I lived here, so I now get all 162 games. But, I’m soon going to move again, and will be without the Braves (without paying extra, which I probably will) for the first time ever!
Now, as far as “disgust” goes, there was some upheaval in the South, early last season, as many of the local cable companies in states like Alabama, Mississippi, etc, were unaware of the Braves no longer being on TBS. People were still getting the Fox Sports games, but not the Peachtree TV (the former WTBS) games. Even though this was well publicized, the cable companies, as usual, sat on their hands, waited for the season to start, and fielded call after call as the Braves home opener against Pittsburgh was not available to literally millions around the South who were actually in the Braves’ viewing area. This did get taken care of during the first week.
Now, as far as bringing the Braves back, remember, the Braves are no longer owned by Time Warner/Turner Broadcasting. Liberty Media is the owner, and the rationale for televising the Braves on the Superstation is not what it was when Ted Turner, owner of both the Braves and Turner Broadcasting, desired to pump his team across the nation on TBS.
Major League Baseball has squeezed the superstations, making it less cost effective to televise MLB games. Plus, unlike in the late 70’s and early ’80’s when every market didn’t have a local team being pumped onto their TV’s on cable, people throughout the country don’t need the Braves on TV, to have a team to follow.
While there may be some markets that don’t have a team, I’m not aware of what they are. So today, you have a “local” team on cable, plus games on ESPN and MLB network, plus Fox games (which are regionally driven) on Saturdays.
So, while it is sad to not have the Braves on nationally for those who don’t live in the local viewing area, it is extremely doubtful that TBS and Liberty Media will decide that it is economically feasible to return the Braves to the Superstation, even for a limited package of games.
April 25th, 20094:32 pm
wow- Seahawks passed on Sanchez…it’ll be interesting to see how far he falls
April 25th, 20094:33 pm
Moby Grape, I didn’t say anything about Cox actually MAKING trades. I said he wanted to trade him. In other words, it was fine with him if Wren traded Escobar in the Peavy deal.
would you like to venture an opinion on Miller vs. Wheeler vs. Matzek? I’m reading that a lot of people think we’ll take Zack Wheeler. (STEVE from OH)
truthfully? No. Just not enough info. Can’t tell speeds, can’t see what different pitches they have and how they throw them. Sorry. They all look decent, how many do they think will be available when the Braves draft? I guess I’d put Wheeler last, but like I said that’s an awful small sample
April 25th, 20094:35 pm
cabravesfan… I don’t understand why Fox is blacking out your, and others, 1:00 games, when their game is 4:oo. They don’t do that here. But what is even more mystifying, to me, is that your “regional” game is the Yankees vs. Red Sox? I didn’t realize that Fox considers you and I to be in the same region.
April 25th, 20094:36 pm
beileve he played some in college (someone please correct me if I am wrong) (CaBravesfan)
you are correct mylady. He caught in college and is the emergency Braves catcher, but with Sammons already up hopefully he won’t have to
April 25th, 20094:39 pm
According to DirecTV, FOX actually holds the broadcast rights to all the Saturday day games (i.e. any game that starts before..5:00?) so they can choose what game they want on the main network. So they black out their regional channels everywhere except the region they are in..makes no sense to me either
Jets just moved up to #5…crowd’s already booing
April 25th, 20094:42 pm
Jets fans are actually cheering the pick! Sign of the apocolypse?
April 25th, 20094:43 pm
it was fine with him if Wren traded Escobar in the Peavy deal. —Jeff321
how do you know that?
April 25th, 20094:47 pm
cabravesfan … so you’re saying that you can see Saturday night games, then? If so, then there’s no day games until June 27. The Braves and Red Sox, ARE the Fox game, on that day. Although, you’ll probably see Seattle vs. the Giants.
Hey, don’t go out of your way, but if you happen to see who the Packers draft, let me know, please.
April 25th, 20094:51 pm
“Call me ‘Muffin’!
“I wantchall to bask in my wisdom:
(2:12 am): “What are the chances that Bobby switches up the lineup tomorrow? Seems that this team can’t score any runs that aren’t gifted to them. What about putting Prado, Infante, Brandon Jones in the lineup? Maybe hitting Jordan Schafer up in the lineup…maybe 1 or 2.”
(12:57 pm): “Dont tell me its the same….we only score on walks lineup…??”
[10 runs, 12 hits, 4 (non-rbi) walks]
Yeah, I get the night games, but typically I do not get the east coast Game of The Week (unless, apparently, Red Sox/ Yankees because everyone wants to watch the Red Sox/ Yankees, right?) So I would either get the Seattle/SF game (That sounds like a winner ) or whatever Dodgers or Angels game is on…kinda sucks.
You are a Packers fan??? And I was just starting to like you! Oh well, I guess nobody’s perfect!
April 25th, 20094:53 pm
Moby Grape – Nothing happens on this team without Cox’s approval. The only reason Boyer got booted is because Cox can’t stand embarrassment from the press. When Cox gets called out on things (very rarely) you’ll see action. (Otherwise its just business as usual.)
Notice how quick Garrett Anderson hit the DL? Right. That was Bowman who dropped the snappy comment.. Next thing ya know its history.
April 25th, 20094:56 pm
I admit to having gotten mildly intrigued by Red Sox-Yankees early this decade; so much so that I completely flip-flopped in 2003, and began to cheer for the Yankees instead of the Sox.
But, the deluge of Yankees-Red Sox has ruined it for me.
As I get older, I actually find myself more interested in various teams, players, games, etc.; but, Yankees-Red Sox does not represent much of a “variation.”
It’s gotten tired. But, I don’t completely blame the networks. I also blame MLB for scheduling 19 of these “treasures” each season.
April 25th, 20095:02 pm
I miss TBS elevising the Braves, too, but mainly because now I have to listen to the other team’s announcer much more than previously.
The Extra Innings package has televised all the Braves’ games so far, with the exception of the Fox Saturday before 7 rule. Extra Innings costs $168 for the season-less than I would spend if I went to one game-much less than if I went to Fenway to see the Braves.
If anything, Cox and Chipper might have been big reasons Escobar wasn’t traded. Cox has always publicly supported Escobar, calling him a future All Star and the like. Chipper also went to bat pretty hard for Escobar when those Peavy talks were going on, saying he considered Escobar the best SS in the NL, or something to that effect.
April 25th, 20095:07 pm
P-Town Brave (1:23 pm): “See that right there proves how awful our offense is…
We had a chance to break the game open early w/ 2 already in and 2 on w/ nobody out…
[10 runs, 12 hits] — “See that right there proves how awful our offense is…”
The Yankees and Red Sox are generating the revenue for the sport. The merchandise of those two teams account for over 40% of all merchandise sold in the majors. That’s why we’re always subjected to them. No different than the NFL always subjecting us to the Cowboys and Steelers, NCAA subjecting us to Duke and Carolina in basketball, NCAA subjecting us to USC, Notre Dame and the SEC in football, NBA subjecting us to Kobe and Lebron, NASCAR subjecting us to Dale, Jr. and Jeff Gordon, and so on and so forth.
April 25th, 20095:10 pm
G.B. drafts B.J. Raji
Steve from OH
April 25th, 20095:11 pm
nolie, it’ll probably be Wheeler and Miller available, I don’t expect Matzek to last to us (he’s my preference). At least one of Aaron Crow and Kyle Gibson will probably be available too, but I’m inclined to steer clear of them because I haven’t read too many good things about their mechanics, and I don’t like what I see either.
I agree on Tate. I’d rather take a pitcher (personal preference) but I don’t really want to “waste” a #7 pick on a toolsy projection-based OF. No complaints if they do take him, but I’d like the pitcher.
April 25th, 20095:12 pm
cabravesfan …. Looks like I exposed a flaw. Oh well, you would’ve found out eventually. Football became a dirty word for me during the last season. The Packers lost 7 games by 4 points or less. It reminded me of the Braves and their 29 straight, 1 run consecutive road losses, last year. You should have heard all the negative yelling and hissy fits I had to listen to last year. I couldn’t stand it. It was all done by me, but I still couldn’t stand it.
BTW, I don’t really know the alternative Fox games on the 27th. I just made up the Seattle/Giants because it sounded so much like a winner. It would be funny if it actually is that game.
April 25th, 20095:14 pm
Braveheart-And we can expect the same thing to an even greater extent this year due to the economic downturn and the almost inevitable decrease in revenue. They’ll push whoever helps to maintain a financial status quo.
brent a. re your 4:31
Yeah, I’m like you and a lot of others…(while growing up a Royals fan) also watched Murph and the Braves on TBS and then of course, into the 14 year division title run.
I’m a baseball fan first tho. I watch whoever’s playing on ESPN, Fox and now the TBS Sunday Game of the Week.
Even with the Royals not making it to the World Series in 86, I watched and pulled for the Red Sox….same thing in 88 with the A’s & Dodgers.
Packers take BJ Raji
preparing my 49ers rant…
April 25th, 20095:16 pm
Tom O’Hawke-That Giants/Seahawks game probably WILL be the Fox game up here, unless it interferes with the Patriots’ game.
April 25th, 20095:17 pm
Unless you were talking about a Mariners, San Francisco game, then we’ll get the Red Soxc-again.
April 25th, 20095:18 pm
You obviously didn’t watch much of the 49ers last season…there was much swearing and text-cursing with my cousin. The Offensive Genius (Mike Martz) decided JT O’Sullivan was a viable NFL Quarterback for the first several games and that the 49ers should be a pass happy team, dispite the fact that our best player is our running back…It got ugly until they named Mike Singletary head coach and the team started playing well
April 25th, 20095:20 pm
nolie, it’ll probably be Wheeler and Miller available (STEVE from OH)
from what little I’ve seen I’d take Miller over Wheeler. Matzek would be my first choice too, partly cause he’s a lefty and if he falls a bit short there is usually a demand from another team for a live body that throws from the post side
April 25th, 20095:21 pm
WOW. Rosenthal just said the R. Sox were pretty close to being the ones who would’ve landed Teixeria.
April 25th, 20095:22 pm
OK- 49ers rant #2 (feel free to skip):
I understand that Michael Crabtree is fast. I understand that he has good hands. I get it. But the 49ers have a talented, young receiver that is oign to be very good. What they do NOT have is a right side of the offensive line! THEY GAVE UP 55 SACKS LAST YEAR! WHAT GOOD IS CRABTREE GOING TO DO WITH OUR F*ING QUARTERBACK LAYING FLAT ON HIS BACK???? DAMNIT SCOT MCCLOUGHAN THIS IS WHY I HATE YOU! We NEED O-LINE HELP!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT???? ARRGGHHHH!
(OK, rant over. carry on, nothing to see here)
your crap about Esco and Peavy and Cox is nothing but board BS. Cox has praised him any number of times. Your hatred is showing you in an unfavorable light …again. on both Cox and Chipper.
April 25th, 20095:24 pm
Jeff321 (4:53 pm): “Moby Grape – Nothing happens on this team without Cox’s approval.”
So how come we still have Escobar, if Cox wanted to trade him?
And how come we don’t have Smoltz, whom Cox wanted to keep?
Have you ever had two consecutive coherent thoughts about anything?
April 25th, 20095:26 pm
Frank from KS, 4:16 pm, “As for not being a Atlanta resident….has there been any discust in and around Atlanta with the Braves not being on TBS anymore?
I seriously believe they need to bring them back on television, somehow.”
The days when TBS began broadcasting most Braves game was a magical time in history. Ernie Johnson, Pete Van Wieran, Skip Caray in the broadcast booth. Every win was a cause for celebration (because there were so few of them).
Unfortunately, those days are gone forever, except in our memories.
Just putting the Braves back on TBS would not bring back that magic.
April 25th, 20095:27 pm
Nolie, don’t you think your boy Moby Grape can take care of himself? Why not mind your own biz unless spoken to?
Tom O -Packers picked B J Raji
April 25th, 20095:28 pm
Thank you C’s and cabravesfan
I just went to check him out. He’s a little guy. A 6′2″ 337lb. nose tackle from BC. I wouldn’t want to have to feed him. Thanks, again.
April 25th, 20095:29 pm
thank you too, Smyrna Jim. (I gotta get a faster computer)
April 25th, 20095:30 pm
abwright re: of part of your 5:26 pm
“Just putting the Braves back on TBS would not bring back that magic.”
Yeah, even the magic of the 14 year division title run.
I think he will be able to afford to feed himself with what they will have to pay him
nolie, thanks. Glad to hear you opinions. What about Wheeler don’t you like? I’ve read a lot of good things about him. 91-95 fastball with a good curve. I liked his mechanics from the side view of Keith Law’s video.
Keith Law had Miller at 92-94, touching 95 and 96 on the gun, with an “inconsistent” curve.
Sorry to ask so much based on so little info, but I’m curious.
April 25th, 20095:34 pm
No, Jeff, I think nolie’s got your argument pegged for what it really is…board BS. And I suspectthat is your motivation for asking him to mind his own business, not the fact that you think he’s sticking up for Moby (who is more than capable of attacking your feeble argument).
April 25th, 20095:36 pm
Funny stuff, young lady.
Thank god for the radio (Lol). Have been able to listen to the last two, three games on radio and like the pairing of Jim Powell and Don Sutton.
I just wished our cable provider here (which used to be Cox Communications before they were bought out, at least here by Allegiance Communications) in Kansas would have Peachtree tho or even the MLB network…but they have neither.
April 25th, 20095:39 pm
