And warnings are immediately issued to both dugouts and to Lowe after he nails Joey Votto in the right ribcage with two outs and none on in the bottom of the first.
I’m sympathetic with what is going on with McCann, however, I don’t understand the lack of options. If it’s an infection, it does likely need treatment to get that part straighted out. If it’s an infection, probably don’t want to do eye surgery right now. If it’s an infection, a contact is only going to further enhance the chance that the infection will linger on.
Once the infection clears up, geez put some glasses on the guy! This club makes enough money to spring for a pair of customs specs to get him through until surgery or contacts or whatever.
Sure, glasses might not be something McCann wants to deal with but the fact is HE COULD play with glasses.
Darrell Porter and a number of other MLB catchers have worn glasses over the years….. it can be done.
I thought Chipper said that Yunel’s plunking was not intentional!?!? I guess Derek Lowe truly understands that part of baseball! Way to go DLowe….give this team some attitude!
It’s not a matter of whether Volquez’s plunking was intentional or not. It’s a matter of baseball being an effed up game these days when it comes to retaliation for wrongs (real or perceived). In a situation like this, one team gets one free shot a day. Lowe took his.
Anyway, if I were Arroyo, I’d plunk Chipper on his hand for being a wuss. After they throw me out, I’d go into the dugout, grab my guitar, and hit Chipper over the head with it for not having his teammate’s back.
Derek Lowe comes from those heated Red Sox-Yankees rivalies. He knows that you must backup your team mate. With guys like Lowe we may have one more than 1 championship through these years.
Perfect time for intentionally hitting – 2 out no one on fastball.
To everyone talking about chipper – he is the team’s vocal leader now. He cant possibly come out and say – Yeah we told Lowe to take care of it tomorrow. I am sure they had discussions about this or if not Lowe thought enough of it to do it himself. Somehow I think message was sent to everyone concerned – Esco, Reds rest of the league. Good to see D-Lowe taking up “The Ace” duties.
I should have known. I finally decide to bench Chipper today on my fantasy team and he breaks out of his slump. A part of me is happy and the other part of me is mad as hell.
This is all very nice, but the real question is how to pacify my bride when I try to explain why I need my rest today, after a long night of Braves baseball followed by the NFL draft. She actually thinks I intend to wake up sometime prior to noon!
just to way in on the Chipper/ Yunel comments if I may- I’ve got no problem with Yunel’s temper and I’ve got no problem with Chipper’s comments. Yunel is going to blow up every now and then and Chipper has to make sure he doesn’t hurt the team when he errupts. I have no doubt Chipper didn’t say anything to the media that he did not say to Yunel first.
Braveheart (1:08 pm): “You’re getting so lost in the trees, you’re not seeing the forest.”
Hardly. I’m making a distinction between behavior that directly affects a game and behavior that does not. Not a mystery that Chipper (or any other pro) would react differently to each.
“See the bigger picture point of what I’m saying.”
I see your point — I just think you’re wrong. First, it’s an insignificant distinction when compared to the real one of whether the behavior might affect a game. Second, it’s a false distinction — he took on Smoltz, didn’t he?
“Now, as to the inside being taken away from Vazquez, dude, it was taken away from Volzquez just the same, a guy who doesn’t have the control Vazquez does. Volzquez, in fact, walks almost twice as many batters per 9 innings than Vazquez. Who’s likely to be more harmed than by having the inside taken away? It’s clearly Volquez.”
So it’s okay to tie one of our pitcher’s hands behind his back if we tie the other pitcher’s hand as well?
Tortured logic, my man — different strokes, I guess.
Braveheart (1:13 pm): “Uh, Random, how often do you see the Braves retaliate? Hudson is about the only one who would get his teammate’s backs in that regard. So Escobar didn’t prevent his team since they only have two guys who would retaliate. One is on the DL. The other is in AAA.”
How about that new fella — Valquez? Vasquez? He plunked 6 last year — 75 in his 353 start career.
Escobar’s behavior removed the option of retaliation — whether the Braves actually would have or not is a separate discussion.
Glad to see the offense breaking out today. Hope it continues instead of what happened last week. Remember scoring 11 on Sunday of last week and then going 3 games and only scoring in 3 seperate innings against the Nats?
Now about last night. I was ticked about the Braves 6th inning.
Schafer led off and got on base. The Braves were leading by a run. They were continuing their offense struggles and had scored two runs on bases loaded walks. They still did not have a hit. When you are struggling offensively, you HAVE to try and make something happen.
Shafer, perhaps the fastest guy on the team, on base, no outs. Geez Bobby, try to help things along! Send the guy! Try to steal a base! Try a hit and run!
What did Bobby do? Nothing. Sat there waiting for the 3 run homer. did the Braves score? Nope.
Thanks goodness Frenchy homered later and Diaz drove in a run.
I just want Bobby to do SOMETHING instead of sitting there just waiting for something to happen instead of trying to MAKE something happen.
That’s when a manager can do something besides just filling out the lineup card.
It’s very smart for the ground ball pitcher to look out for the ones retrieving his ground balls. D Lowe has been around this game long enough to know what had to be done. I like him on my team.
