MNin04, seriously, no earned run is given when the flat given is over the pitcher’s current control frame. Volquez was past his when the run scored. After that, it’s all unearned for either club.

“The guy was already on with a hit though…so if there is an error that advances the runner….then its an unearned run?”

Yes, with the single. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have scored.

“what if the guy hits a homerun with the guy on second after the error…are both earned runs? or one is earned and one is unearned?”

Both runs would be earned.

Good stuff, Tom, that’s kind of a weird way to score it…because guys would be on 1st and 3rd with 1 out…and could get driven in…without a hit…and it would be an earned run? Thats complicated.

TOMMY HANSON tagged with a third loss tonight. 95 pitches, 62 strikes; 4 groundouts, 8 flies; faces 24 batters through 6.0 IP; 4 H; 2 R; 1 ER; 2 BB; 6 SO; 0 HR; 2.18 ERA. Looks like a quality start with little run support and an unearned run creating the decision.

what if the guy hits a homerun with the guy on second after the error…are both earned runs? or one is earned and one is unearned? MFin04

yes, both are earned. he did not get on base via the error, he got into scoring position for the base hat. A homer would make it a moot point

MFin04 ……. 1) Pretend you’re the official scorer. At the end of the inning, ask yourself, what would’ve happened if there is no error? Keep in mind, an unearned run can turn into an earned run, as the inning devolops.

2) Don’t pay any attention to Bubdylan, after 11:00pm, on a Friday. He tends to get silly.

Are they sure McCann’s problem is just a change in vision? I’m not sure when he first had problems with his eye, but he was playing well during the WBC and early in the season. Normal vision changes don’t happen overnight. I just hope the Lasik enhancement will solve it.

Chipper’s succinct, honest appraisal of the Escobar-Volquez incident:

“Esco’s high-strung, and he overreacts sometimes. There was no intent [by Volquez to hit him]. If you’re going to stand on top of the plate, you’ve got to expect to get hit. if you get hit, take your base. There’s no reason to get everybody geared up, warnings given, [and then umpires] take away the inside of the plate.”

On Escobar, he added: “You don’t want to take away from what he is. He’s an energetic guy…. Apparently he doesn’t like getting hit.”

I kinda felt the same way about that, DOB. Volquez quickly turned his head toward first base after hitting Escobar and uttered some sort of profanity. He wasn’t happy with himself. He didn’t stare down Yunel or anything. From the radar gun, that appeared to be the hardest fastball he threw the whole game and he just lost control of it.

Below is a link to a great piece of sound engineering. It is a composite audio/video of song whereby additional tracks were laid in by different singers and musicians from different places around the world. The finished product is tremendous! The song itself is that classic standard “Stand By Me” originally released in 1955 by The Staple Singers and released again in 1961 by the Drifters. This composite version is a real toe tapper. So turn up the speaker volume. Give it a little over a minute before you decide that you don’t like it. That’s when the next artists start to add on.

Jeff Brantley, I believe, said that Escobar wanted no part in charging the mound. Kinda said he’s all talk in other words. When you watch the replay, you can see where the Reds catcher wants the ball and it’s no where near Yunel. He gave a pretty big target to the pitcher. I like what Chipper said about it. Also, I want to have Gonzo’s babies.

Okay, that’s a little weird. I grant you that. But come on, Gonzo’s the mutherf***in’ man. Those guys were afraid to swing. They were afraid to be in the batter’s box.

I’m hoping this is just a case of bad relaying (as Chipper called it) on DOB’s part…

It’s one thing to be a vocal leader. It’s another to completely call out a player like that. Back your teammate up.

Jeff Francoeur said in an interview during Spring Training that he thought it’d be good for the team to get in a “fight” at the beginning of the season; show people they’re not messing around. No one got hurt, no one got ejected.

They need to do some team bulding exercises.. fall back into each others arms or somethin’. Haha… They just need some team chemistry.

Well if we’re going to be fighting anybody this year it better damn well be the Cubs cause they’re asking for it.

They’re a bunch of arrogant pr!@#s. This is going on three years now and I’m ready for that first game in June at the Ted. I expect in the first inning for Lowe to put a fastball in Alfonso Soriano’s kidney. I think Lowe would be good in a fight. He seems like he would know what to do, like he’s done some scrappin’. If it’s JJ or KK starting the first game against the Cubs, I’d be too nervous. They’re very delicate.

I hope it’s D-Lowe. He is a philanderer after all, he obviously knows how to mistreat people. I kid D-Lowe.

But we have to have a fight for a good reason. The Cubs offer many. Then the Marlins. Good to see the Marlins get put in their place tonight.

Sad to hear that unfortunately Chipper doesn’t have his own teammates back if there was a fight to be had…

Enjoy your birthday Chipper…but worry more about getting healthy than whether Yunel was in the right on the decision (besides the fact of the two players having history being overlooked)…

0 for 5 and still not healthy…here’s to hoping Infante is in the lineup at 3b tomorrow (and Prado at 2b)

Oh, and about Escobar’s reaction…I’m just happy to notice someone with the slightest bit of a pulse in that dugout!
