Doc H.

(Sorry for the late response…was watching Hogan’s Heroes.)

No comments from him. He isn’t better yet…Like I said, he’s scheduled to see the doctor tomorrow morning. Ms. Rogers has a little story up here (Thanks for that, BTW, Ms. Rogers.)

Hopefully we’ll know soon tomorrow. This hunk of Nights Are Forever Without You by England Dan and John Ford Coley fits the situation well…for me:

Lying in bed with the radio on

Moonlight falls like rain

Soft summer nights thinking of you

When will I see you again

Soft and low the music means

I can’t stop thinking ’bout you, thinkin’ ’bout you

I didn’t know it would be so strong

Waiting and wondering about you

I didn’t know it would last so long

Nights are forever without you

Nights are forever without you

(So I don’t lay awake at night with the radio on, but still…)

I have to say something that will create some debate, but it is the truth………… Why not make Infante our everyday 2b. He has the best glove (and bearhand) on the team…….you could say chipper is second to none also. But Infante is a vacuum cleaner………and he hits for average, not KJs power but average. This team is built around pitching, groundball pitchers……..wouldnt be more adequate to play your best defensive 2b? If you want to play KJ. play because of his pop, play him at LF and give Diaz more playing time backing up LF, RF and 1B.

Wow, just caught the Bowman blog on Garret….did Garret take Bowman’s parking place or something? I don’t disagree but just not used to Bowman going on a bit of a rant.

From the blog…

While I’m confident that Schafer will prove effective while battling through inevitable strikeouts, I’m also pretty sure the Braves spent about $2.5 million too much on the left field manequin that Scott Boras sold them in February.

When you talk to Garret Anderson, he’s as lifeless as he looks during those few occasions that he’s actually deemed himself healthy enough to be on the field. He’s a nice guy who has had a nice career.

But there were a number of better, more economically-sound options for the Braves, who would have been wise to just stick to their initial intention to give some of their own players a chance to prove they could play left field.

Slim012, there are an incredible amount of “fans”, that are voicing their opinion lately, that isn’t necessarily the voice of many of us “true fans”. They strike me as adolescents, just trying to get a rise out of some of the true, Braves’ fans. In any event, they sure as hell don’t speak for me.
Blaine Boyer is possessed with much talent. Interpreting that to a major league mound, however, doesn’t always equate. Last year, for the first half, he was pitching quite well. The second half was a different story. He was called on to pitch in 76 ballgames. That’s 33 more than he ever appeared in before. He never complained. When Bobby asked him to pitch, even with his arm tired and falling off, he pitched. I still don’t think he has recovered from all those appearances.
Now he has a new chance. IMO, Dave Duncan is the finest pitching coach in the majors. I think you will see Blaine come back. The “true Braves” fans will be happy for him, but sorry he’s not still with the Braves. The idiots? They won’t care, they won’t even pay attention. After all, they’re idiots!

What are anyone’s thoughts on trying to resume the talks with the cards about ludwick for kelly, put infante at 2nd, use diaz as backup (outfield), and search for an infield backup or just bring someone up from the minors. One more bat in the lineup would be just swell. Cards dont seem to be having any problems winning games so far and ludwick has looked good. It’s fun to think what if.

Today, Brandon Jones is a better player, because he can play. If Anderson can’t make the bell, then he should be DL’d (I said this earlier) so that BJones can show what he can do with another audition.

2.5 million in the grand scheme of things, is not a lot of dough. If Brandon Jones came up and did well (260-270 w/ good defense), I think the Braves would release GA.

I find it odd that so many bloggers show the hate for the unfortunate Blaine Boyer. This club is in negative territory on reclamation projects. The occasional tie (MacBride/Ledezma) is an aberration. Look at Willie Harris, he?? even Langerhans found “life after Coxville”. Tyler Yates lived longer and prospered. Remember the guy we picked up off the trash heap for $750k – you know the guy pitching in his basement waiting for the call. From this ole dude’s perspective we haven’t done so well off the “waiver wire” (ok, I date myself) that we can afford to ridicule someone else’s acquistion from our “failure” files.

By the way, does it say something about human nature that so many on this blog could show no love for a guy who gave the org 9 years, was a decent fellow, and had the bad fortune to see the headlights in the dark?

I wanted Blaine gone, but with dignity, let him find favor in his post-Atlanta life. (Now Furcal, I shoot his sorry azz – so don’t think I’m some sappy sentimentalist! Ya hear!

Now that Ludwick has shown that last year was (probably) not a fluke, it might be harder to get him from the Cards. I haven’t checked though, so I am not sure how their other OF’ers are doing (Ankiel, Rasmus, Duncan, etc)??

I would make that trade, then see what we could get in the way of a backup infielder who we could spin Diaz for. BUT, I really don’t see that happening.

That’s just an absurd argument Doc H. It really takes some amazing juggling of statistics to conclude Prado has more power than KJ.

In his entire minor league career, Martin Prado slugged over .420 only one time (.422).
In his entire minor league career, Kelly Johnson slugged UNDER .420 only one season (.394, in 2002).

Kelly Johnson slugged .446 last year in a down year for his usual production in terms of power, and hit only 12 home runs, in 150 games. The year before he slugged .457 with 16 home runs-his first full year in the majors.

Martin Prado slugged .461 in 78 games (less than half a season) last year. Statistics over 11 games are not even worth mentioning-but right now, Prado is slugging .676, and KJ .561. KJ’s number is actually in line with some of his minor league seasons. Prados number is about double anything we should expect from him.

Prado has never hit more than 5 home runs in a season. He has hit 25 doubles only one before in the minors. KJ’s minor league double high was 35, and least season he hit 39, again, in a down year.

And yet you conclude Prado has more power? Amazing.

And thirdly….Kelly Johnson is a darn good baseball… and Prado is darn good baseball player. So is Infante. I see either Prado or Infante getting traded at some point for a power bat. Firmly on the side of KJ over Marteen, here.

But, for those who constantly point to MP’s minor-league slugging, it sure seems to me, from watching his ABs with the big club, that he might’ve improved. I’d say he can hit a ton of doubles, and perhaps 10 HR per 500 ABs. Whether he could do this exposed everyday is another question, but I believe the man has better-than-average 2B pop.

Prado’s numbers in 2008 are mostly a result of a fluke August in which he slugged .649 in 74 at-bats. He was coming back down to his career norms in September 2008, slugging .317 with a .654 OPS in 82 at-bats.

Prado absolutely does not hit for more power than Kelly Johnson. Not a higher slugging nor certainly more homeruns. Their minor league numbers and how they project are different.

Epinephrine

April 20th, 2009
8:45 pm

Mekons, fine, but my point is, it takes AMAZING juggling of statistics to conclude that Prado has more power than KJ. Sure, Prado might have developed more pop. But the point is that it’s absurd to take a sample size of 90 some odd games to conclude one thing, against a far larger sample of hundreds that all say the exact opposite thing. Arguing about Prado’s SLG% over a mere 90 games is a gross misuse of stats.

There had never been a negative consequence that was made public, but now we might have the first. McCann had the surgery last year, and has had trouble with dry eyes from time to time since then (Random)

we really never could say that it couldn’t hurt. about 5-8% or so of those surgeries cause problems. Dry eye is one of the most common. The good news is that most of them can be fixed > Hope he is seeing a well-respected specialist instead of the guy who did the surgery. If it is dry eye he definitely does not want another lasix “tune-up”. McFann the odds are in his favor though it could end up taking awhile. Let’s hope not.
