I just finished reading the abridged works of Mark Twain. Does anybody have an author I should move on to now? I prefer books with clever wit, compelling antagonists, and of course, intriguing dialogue.
As cool as Acta’s comments were, I like this one from assistant GM Mike Rizzo:
“The incompetence of the bullpen was drawn to a head today.”
So what if the guy used a phrase I’ve never heard before (”drawn to a head”?…I thought it was “came to a head”)? It’s becoming quite apparent that Mike Rizzo doesn’t like the way this team is constructed. I know Kasten is the acting GM, but Rizzo is running the day-to-day ops and wants to show that he’s worthy of the full-time gig. It’s true that Manny Acta should give Elijah Dukes his $500 back for that bull**** fine, but the Nats desperately need someone to kick a$$ in that clubhouse.

Looks like I missed some good conversation on Bobby’s situation as manager. A couple of thoughts. With a guy like BC, he is what he is. He doesn’t change, and probably won’t. He is a players manager, and when he needs to be something else, then he is still a players manager. Note how long it takes a player to get in his dog house.
As for Ozzie in Chicago. I have no use for him. He is a loud mouth. I think he will eventually wear out his welcome. There are times when it is appropriate to give the player a tongue lashing, but I don’t think Ozzie understands the nature of timing.
As for BC, I think he leaves when he is ready to leave. I suspect the Braves have a few contingincies (sp).
I don’t think we will see Prado getting the second base job full time, unless KJ get’s injured. As I stated earlier this afternoon, the Braves have a problem with their bench when more than one player is down (what team wouldn’t though??). I wouldn’t be overly surprised to see a roster addition sometime this year, if the right player becomes available, so as to help with filling in at CF, SS and 3B. Unless Norton gets untracked, I think he might be the one to leave.
One last question? Who is this WILLSTER, and why is he always yelling???
By the way, Javier Vazquez put up 12.2 innings and 18 ER in his final three starts for the White Sox. Say what you want about Ozzie calling him out, but Vazquez turtled like a mutha.
Nelson Figuroa would be a “wise” choice for the Braves to pick up. There is no doubt he can help this team. The Mets don’t have room, nor do they really need him, but this pen could sure use him. Go get him Wren!
Chop Chop, that may have something to do with the fact that Ozzie Guillen was running a 4-man rotation for the final month of the season. Also they had 2 double-headers in September and one of their off-days was canceled. Danks, Buehrle, Floyd, and Vazquez were the only useful MLB starters in the organization with Contreras out and they were in the midst of a pennant race. Not saying that’s responsible for his meltdown, but it could’ve been.
I liked Schafers infield single today (the 2nd one). He had already reached on a bunt so their 3B was playing him shallow and he takes a low and away pitch, hits it hard right at the 3B, and since he’s so fast, the 3B tried to hurry and misplayed it (it was hit really hard, I don’t know if he would’ve been able to make a play if he wasn’t hurrying). Good piece of hitting.
By the way, Javier Vazquez put up 12.2 innings and 18 ER in his final three starts for the White Sox. Say what you want about Ozzie calling him out, but Vazquez turtled like a mutha. (ChopChop)
IMO most of that was on Ozzie not giving him enough rest and badmouthing him at the same time. From what I have heard about Vazquez he is not one who would respond well to being ripped by his manager.
I’m not sure if there are many pitchers who would respond well by being ripped by their managers in the press. Manager to player ripping should happen face to face. Vazquez chose to never publicly complain about it and proved to be the classier of the two. I think he’s gonna pitch his tail off for BC.
Chop Chop (1:31 am): “By the way, Javier Vazquez put up 12.2 innings and 18 ER in his final three starts for the White Sox. Say what you want about Ozzie calling him out, but Vazquez turtled like a mutha.”
Like PWHjort intimates, one of those three starts (penultimate) was on three days’ rest and in each of the immediately two preceding starts he allowed only 2 ER in 6.0 IP.
So the final 12.2 of his 208.1 IP were not steller — there were reasons. The 12.o IP prior to that were two quality starts.
I agree with nolie</strong (3:06 am) and Runnin (4:30 am).
I loved Manny Acta’s comments on the bullpen aswell. Could you ever imagine Bobby Cox saying that? It just wouldn’t happen. I know he is a nice guy manager but sometimes I do hope he gives them a grilling behind closed doors.
There’s a Quality Start Stat for starting pitchers. Is there an equivalent for relief pitchers. If not, how about “no runs allowed, earned or inherited.” I think Moylan is 5 out of 7 so far this year, if memory serves. That’s a better measure, it seems, than trying to look at his ERA and know that he allowed a gazillion runs in one appearance.
Wow, hard to read through the willsters, lou vales to get to something worth reading. Is it time for real Braves fans to take over the blog? Love to read the blog, just have to learn who to mute.I hope we can get through the rest of the road trip at least 4-2,better if possible.
Hey DOB,
How can we keep some of these crazy, rude people off the blog? You have this guy Willster sounding drunk, that eatPhillie dude. Is someone monitoring this stuff, because it is getting old. Obviously, people are going to have differing opinions on a blog, but some of this stuff is unacceptable.
Ugh, I hope we know today! Kinda on the edge of my seat over here.
Talk about stressful… I don’t even want to speculate about the worst case scenario in this situation. I just hope McCann is going to be good to go soon.
man, Glavine, Chipper, Escobar, Anderson, and now McCann…
Is this just getting it out of the way early? or is this going to be another one of those seasons?
I’m working on uploading them to ImageShack as we speak. Would’ve had it up yesterday, but we were gone most of the day. I should have a link up sometime soon. Sorry it’s taking so long.
Ozzie Guillen is held in high esteem by just about nobody in baseball. The guy is a punk. Anything that comes out of his mouth is totally ignored. Whatever he may have said in the past or done was only to cover his sorry butt. He is an honorary member of the Ty Cobb fan club. Right there with Jeff Kent.
Hope Wren and his staff are looking closely at the bullpen situation. Bennett overthrowing first yesterday on a come-backer is one of the dumbest mental errors a pitcher can make. Lucky that the Bravos were smashing the Pirates. And Parr… Come on, this guy’s a scrub. Two outs on two pitches in the ninth, and then he melts down. And it wasn’t even a pressure situation.
Gonzo giving up that two-run homer the other night in yet another non-pressure situation.
Gonzo and Soriano aren’t going anywhere. But the middle relief and set up situations need to be addressed.

Can’t argue with that.

I loved Manny Acta’s comments on the bullpen aswell. Could you ever imagine Bobby Cox saying that? It just wouldn’t happen. I know he is a nice guy manager but sometimes I do hope he gives them a grilling behind closed doors.

I hope Brian McCann’s eye doesn’t turn out like Nick Esasky’s vertigo – especially now that Saltalamacchia and Flowers are gone from the farm.

Hey, Willster, if you really are Ohman, remember this, probably most fans wanted you back. Your beef is with management, not us, your supporters.

New Stat:
There’s a Quality Start Stat for starting pitchers. Is there an equivalent for relief pitchers. If not, how about “no runs allowed, earned or inherited.” I think Moylan is 5 out of 7 so far this year, if memory serves. That’s a better measure, it seems, than trying to look at his ERA and know that he allowed a gazillion runs in one appearance.
Let’s discuss.

Hey DOB,
How can we keep some of these crazy, rude people off the blog? You have this guy Willster sounding drunk, that eatPhillie dude. Is someone monitoring this stuff, because it is getting old. Obviously, people are going to have differing opinions on a blog, but some of this stuff is unacceptable.

DOB by this time tomorrow night, you will probably have a lot better idea about whether you should be worried about Mac’s eye.
Ugh, I hope we know today! Kinda on the edge of my seat over here.

Talk about stressful… I don’t even want to speculate about the worst case scenario in this situation. I just hope McCann is going to be good to go soon.

Yeah, I know. Meant to put “hope” in italics to kinda emphasize that we were talking about the same day.

I don’t either. Just wanna know what’s going on and how long he’ll be out. Trying not to think about it too much.

Rock on……
