Jeff, the comments about Chipper truly are idiotic. If by poor leader you mean THE leader on this team, then yes, I guess you are right. He leads by example, sorry he isn’t the vocal leader that you want him to be, just not his personality.
I also love the people that say they pitched in college. Whoop-de-do. That does not automatically make you a baseball expert. Who knows more about the intricacies of baseball, Manny Ramirez or Peter Gammons? Hmmm somehow I don’t think it is the person that played in the Major Leagues.

Dear God: I never ask for much. I try to be good and kind to others. I would help anyone in distress. But that doesn’t mean that we have to like incompetent, egotistical relief pitchers who get paid about 8 times as much as the average working person. God, I bear no ill upon your gooey servant, Blaine, but please Lord, get this guy off this team before he causes more pain to those of his who cherish your Braves. Please open the eyes of Bobby Cox, and Roger MacDowell, and Frank Wren. Lord, you know if a baby sparrow falls from it’s nest and you know every boxscore of every game ever played and therefore you know what Blaine Boyer has done. It is a sin when someone tries to do something that they should not be doing. So please, help the sinner (your gooey servant, Blaine) get on the right path – a path that does not involve baseball. Amen. Oh, and please heal Chipper’s thumb. Thank you God.

Well the Marlins did play very good against the Braves, but it was a pretty depleted lineup without Chipper, Escobar, and McCann. They also had good luck Derek Lowe wasn’t as sharp. Hopefully next time the Braves face them, Moylan, would be the Moylan of old, and Boyer won’t be anywhere on sight.

Slugger – I see your point about Jordan and SBs but let’s wait until he figures out how to lay off the high pitch first. Can’t steal 1st and he’s having a lot of trouble getting on right now. Give him a little while to learn and get accustomed to MLB first, then move him down where he can take advantage of the speed

Campillo to DL, Parr in
Boyer DFA, Reyes in.
Jeff Bennett Option to AAA, Purchase Medlen’s contract (we have 2 spots on the 40 man available)
Soriano, Gonzalez, Medlen, Moylan, Parr, Carlyle, and EOF make up the new bullpen bullpen.

Nice, Boyer will be disabled.
Needs to go to the minors or independent ball and either drop down as a ’subby’ righty or learn how to hit again.
I vote the Braves trade Garrett, Diaz and Parr for Micah Owings to play left field.
He actually scares people when he swings the bat, and I don’t know why the Braves haven’t tried to get him sooner.

i would agree that its not good to have your clubhouse leader, the guy who gave everyone a closed door pep talk to start the season, on the bench. not that i blame chipper, because i agree his thumb needs to heal, but the guy who is that leader needs to be on the field setting the example, or there needs to be another guy that will do it.

Braves are cursed this year for two reasons:
1) Montgomery Gentry is doing promos for Peachtree TV. Is there a cheesier act out there? The guitar player sings like his nuts are in a vice – what a cornd*ck!
2) Blaine Boyer. This clown needs to be cut. Not demoted, not benched.. CUT. It’s time to realize that he’s a headcase Bobby (think Danny Kolb).

I know I sound like a cry baby, excuse making “homer”, but I believe the series could have easily been 2 and 1 Braves series win if Lowe hadn’t had that rainout his previous start that obviously threw him out of whack and he got SCREWED on some close calls by the ump. Javy K’d TWELVE Marlins and some how Miller and that very average pen were just a hair better. Today, gotta blame someone, and KJ… you’re it. Kawakami deserved better than he got and even pitched better this outing than his last.

scoots, you are absolutely right, but middle relievers have to know what is expected of them, and mainly that is to come in and throw strikes (ease19)
you can’t possibly believe that they don’t know that they are supposed to throw strikes can you? Knowing and doing are two different things my man. Middle relievers are the dregs of baseball. They are there because they are not good enough to pitch in any better capacity. Even really good pitchers have spells when they can’t throw strikes so why would you assume that MRs can do it at will?

So trade more for Owings. I don’t care what the Reds think Micah is, he hasn’t been effective as a pitcher at this level.
Let him come here and hit the sh** out of baseballs all season. He has the HS State Home run record (a small HS field) and he hit tanks at Tech before transferring to Tulane (hit bombs there too).
The Orioles invested more money in Adam Loewen than anyone has in Owings, and now Loewen’s a full-time hitter in Single A (OF).

My observation from this series….
The Marlins came in with a great strategy to get at the Braves weakness. They figured that the starting pitching would be fairly even (which it was) so they took a lot of pitches, and ran up high pitch counts to get the Atlanta starters out of the game early. Once they got to the bullpen in the 5th 6th and 7th innings, they achieved what they wanted.
Hopefully Bobby and Roger can get this bullpen issue fixed soon, or this series will be a blue print on how to beat the braves from here on out.

It’s definitely way too early to make predictions about this team, but it’s never bad to try to work on something or add help in an area before a legitimate downward trend begins.
Two cases:
McCann’s offensive production versus Schafer’s two strike approach/approach with runner’s at 3rd and less than two outs.
Some would say both players played ‘bad,’ and statistically they may have been ‘bad;’ however, McCann has been crushing baseballs with tough luck. Jordan’s case shows the potential for a negative trend.
Whether hitting with two strikes or hitting with a runner at 3rd with less than two outs, Jordan faced a situation where he failed repeatedly without adjustment.
I’m not saying hang or bench the guy or that the Braves will lose 100 games this year. Someone just needs to work with Jordan on his two strike approach, and he needs a veteran to work with him on his plan and approach with runners on 3rd with less than two outs.
If you agree with that type of thinking, then I think your comment is 100% correct. It’s too early, and sometimes your team plays bad.

All –
A stone bruise in your hand is a terrible, terrible thing. If Chipper plays through this, his approach will change unintentionally. Because you’re someone reluctant to swing at anything inside (or to let the ball get deep) for fear of getting jammed, you start swinging at pitches that won’t hurt to hit.
Since I swung at just about everything when I played, the stone bruise in my right hand thumb (top hand batting) area actually helped me!
It forced me to take pitches so I got into good counts. Chipper has one of the best eyes/approaches in baseball, so it’s the exact opposite.
The last thing we want is for Chipper’s bruise to nag for a couple of months with him in the lineup while he’s subconsciously changing his approach mid-pitch. Then he’ll almost certainly be in a slump when that thing heals because he had been swinging at a different set of pitches for 2 months.
If you want to know what the injury feels like. Take your left index finger and left thumb and pinch between your right index/right thumb. Try to touch your fingers through that skin/muscle and notice that deep and painful swing.
Now, if you want to know what it feels like if Chipper hits now with that wihout squaring the ball 100% perfect on the barrel, count to five and squeeze as hard as you possible can in that same spot.
That’s what that darn stone bruise will feel like, and it goes back to 100% unhealed everytime you’re jammed.

You can only run up high pitch counts when the opposing pitcher can’t or doesn’t throw strikes. Against guys who pound the strike zone (as Lowe does, and as Kawakami has, historically), all that “patient” stuff gets you is 0-and-2, 1-and-2, and defensive ABs. That neither of those two Braves pitchers threw according to form is one thing, and certainly contributed to the sweep; planning on them pitching against form regularly enough to use the fact as a “blueprint” is something else.
Vazquez, of course, is a whole ‘nother story, LOL, since you never know which guy is going to come out of the dugout for his turn.

Jeff Step away from the Kool-Aid, please…thank you. We’ve played nine games, and I hardly would call this a “big game” in which Chipper should’ve played. And like Carroll said, a switch hitter who has had hundreds and hundreds over of at bats isn’t simply going to stop hitting from one side. Not to mention, Chipper said himself he probably wouldn’t be helping himself or the team in playing with his bruised thumb. Would you rather he sit in the ninth game of the season, or get put on the DL? I don’t know what you’re problem is with the dude, maybe he didn’t sign for you (I wouldn’t blame him, you’re head is about ten feet up your @$$) or something, but there is really no need to attack Chipper or his manhood/performance.

If MR’s could throw strikes at will, then why do teams carry 3 or four of them? I (ease)
that’s not helping me understand what you meant. . I said that they can’t throw them at will and that includes Boyer most relievers are up for a while and down for a while very erratic that’s why they aren’t starters or closers. Teams carry three or four because they are a necessity but you(not necessarily you as a specific individual) are kidding yourself if you think most any of them can be relied on to be consistently good. If they could do that they would not be middle relievers. No team drafts a player with the idea of him being a middle reliever. They are drafted as hopeful starters 90+% of the time and hopeful closers the rest. They end up middle relievers because they are failures at anything else. Blaming them for being what they are is pretty stupid, which is one thing that many on this board do regularly. I’m not saying that you do, but I still don’t really understand the meaning of that first post obviously. So just count this as my thoughts on relievers in general.

Scoots,
The Marlins struck out a TON in the series, and that is going to happen wtih the game plan that they employed. Kawakami pitched well today (aside from the mistake right after the error) and deserved better than what he got. The Marlins took the approach of waiting and running up high pitch counts. It worked out for them in every game this series. The starters didn’t go past 6 in any game in this series.
If our starters don’t go 7 innings every night out, we are pretty much done at this point. Bobby and Roger need to re-evaluate the bullpen and get some solid relief in there.
Once Moylan is actually healthy and regains his command, I’ll feel a little more comfortable with our starters only going 6.

Definitely explains why he was K’ing and also why he was extremely frustrated.
He was off to a mammoth start before the jam-job (doubles off the wall, bomb in Philly), then his offensive production when down b/c of the jam-job. Then you can either swing yourself into a slump with a hurt thumb, let it heal, then try to work your way out of a slump with the negative approach you’ve had the last two months…or you let it heal.
It’s just a concern the Braves need to think about seriously addressing. Teams need to have a guy that plays every day and is a power threat. What does this team’s future look like (power-wise) ?
Freeman and Heyward for sure, but Cody Johnson is really catching my eye. He hit 26 HR last year at Rome, and has 4 HR already this year in 24 ABs.

How many times during the past 3 years have I said that Blaine (every MLB hitter’s b#t*h, does not belong in organized baseball? If he was from any place other than “Hot Lanta”, he would have benn long gone! Also, time for Bobby to go, but he covets that $3M check. Memo to Wren: Time to make changes if you expect things to turn for the better. Remember as I always have said, “doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results is insanity.” Peace.

Slugger,
I asked DOB during spring training about Cody Johnson, and basically the answer I got was, he needs to make more consistant contact before he’s even considered. He was a first round pick a few years ago and hasn’t played above high-A ball. He hits a ton of bombs, but he K’s way too much.

Dang, the blog is heating up, just when I’m packing it up and heading home to get in a run….And really I wish somebody would be blogging from the ole AJC to tell me what happened in the meeting….HA!
As for the other stuff, well I was a little jealous of cdog’s sign-on, handle, whatever you guys call it, I thought that was pretty cool. then I read a post and take it back. (Can’t even remember now what that was. How fair is that?)
I’ll let you guys duke it out over Chipper. But I’ll say this, I think Slugger put together a pretty articulate post on the subject on page 8 of the posts here.
By the way, Jordan Schafer got first base – the first base he touched in Philadelphia on his first major league homer – sent to him by the Phillies. He was pretty excited about that. Cool gesture by the Phillies. Jordan knows Charlie Manuel because they both live in the Winter Haven, Fla. area, but he’s not sure if Manuel was behind it or who. But pretty classy.

Lets see, we should have come home undefeated if not for our A1 bullpen, then we get swept out by ths Fish (who everybody always underestimates) Didnt take long for Chipper to start missing games(go figure) Boyer is still piching BP to the opponents, Glavine is done, & we should have kept Freddie Gonzalez ourselves to be the next manager. Other than these slight problems its been a great start! Go Bravos!

That is cool. Nice to see such a classy gesture from a division rival

Just saw that John Madden has retired. I wonder if that means that Frank Calliendo has to quit, too?

“I think Boyer will stick around until Saturday morning. I’d have to say I’m 98 percent sure he’ll be designated when Reyes is added to the roster.” – Mark Bowman, from his blog. (if this has been posted, mea culpa.
Personally, I’d be surprised if the Braves gave up on Boyer this early, but we’ll see…

Dear Carroll,
Forgive me for finding fault, but you currently have three articles up that are date-lined Thursday that refer to “tonight’s game in Pitttsburgh.”

Lew,
He’s really taken a big hit in 2009. Not only does he lose John Madden, the guy also lost Dubya. Luckily for him, Jay Leno is going to have a primetime show on NBC. If Leno had left the airwaves for good, I shudder to think what Frank Caliendo would have done to himself.
