DAP- that was 14 years ago. We also had 3 HOF starters in the rotation. In today's game, you have to have that slugger. Everyone of the players I mentioned played for a playoff team last year.

In regard to McCann being out today... Someone pointed out that he's played in 8 straight games. However, there have been 2 off days in the last 7 games. So he's only played 5 of the last 7 days. He's had two recent days off.

And no, I don't expect him to start 162 games, or even 150. But today, when you're trying to avoid a home sweep by your 1st place division rivals??? Hell no. I wouldn't dream of sitting him today. If it were up to me, he would play today and get tomorrow off.

scoots, you are absolutely right, but middle relievers have to know what is expected of them, and mainly that is to come in and throw strikes. I would much rather a guy give up three singles than walk the bases loaded (although before MFin04 goes into high gear, neither are optimal situations). Boyer just has not done that yet and so I am left to wonder where his mind is. He has had great stuff in the past and was feeling confident coming into and out of ST. Is he just over confident right now, perhaps...too much adrenaline, could be...or is it be just there is just so much pressure on him to perform this year after tanking at the end of last year, which is my opinion. The Braves were relying on him heavily to anchor the bullpen this year and frankly some kids can't handle it. Well, I have just talked myself into keeping him, maybe the answer is that he needs more work, have Bobby show that he still has confidence in him...awww, who the heck knows, trust me when I say that the mind of a pitcher is a mysterious thing (even Wesley Crusher would have a hard time figuring it out)

Coach, your 6:39 post is fine and dandy. Believe me. I'm aware of the GREAT seasons that pitchers have had under him. How about listing the guys that have not had great years under Leo? Many of whom are on your same list.

For example, you reference HoRam's 2003 season with 12 wins. Fine. But he had a phenominal (sarcasm) ERA of 4.00 that year. Then in 2005 (Leo's last in Atlanta), he had 11 wins to go with his 4.63 ERA.

Not enough? OK. How about your 2003 listing of Russ Ortiz's 21 wins? Sure, he had 7 more wins than his 14 wins in SF during the 02 season. But did you know his ERA went UP and his innings went down? Hmm. You think the TEAM he was on had something to do with the win totals? Come on man. Think before you type.

How dare a pitcher take a step back under the watchful eye of Leo Mazzone! Again. If you're gonna bother with a list like you listed out, perhaps give the details that matter. Not just win totals.

Secondly, why did you just mention the W-L record? We all know that that stat is the most over-rated stat a starting pitcher can have.

Those Braves TEAMS were fantastic (lead by the pitching or course). But you could have at least dropped the ERA's for me.

Listen. I'm not saying that Leo sucked. Not saying that Bobby is a horrible manager. I'm just saying that when you've got 3 HOF guys in your rotation for the better part of a decade (along with a 3B that is going to go down as one of the greatest switch-hitters of all time), leading your team, with COUNTLESS other All-stars on the lineup, the end results are going to be good over a long period of time.

Don't take this post as an attack. I enjoy jabbing with you. I enjoy this topic. Nobody can be proved right or wrong, when disucssing Leo's effect on the Braves (and Orioles). Sure the numbers are there. But there is NO WAY to prove that things would have been different (for better or worse) without him around.

After all, Maddux WAS a pretty good pitcher before joining Leo. Perhaps the wind and good field conditions in Atlanta let to a lot more outs. Perhaps better defense?

But this is a topic that can (and will continue to) go on for years.
