It is awfully quiet in Philadelphia right now.
Brooklyn Braves Brawler
Schaefer can hit, I just wonder can he field it consitently. just takes time.
I guess we still don’t have any power in outfield.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I guess that makes up for his fielding eh WHAT A DAY!!!! LOGAN SCHAFER!!!!!
yeah baby! I just added him to my fantasy team after Sunday and was hoping for a good showing!
Rob from SC
lets finish this one off, go home and work over the sorry nationals
im sayin round 24hrs for schaf
April 8th, 20094:50 pm
seriously, where is the power gonna come from?
shoot better to have 8 10-20 homer guys than just one dude with 40
let’s keep it up BRAVOS!
my apologies glorydays… Got the two trades mixed up.
Hopefully he slows his trot down and enjoys this one.
I like the killer instict of this team. They just keep hitting, no matter the score.
Pitching and hitting. WOW!
where did Schafe’s homer go out? left center right?
I would assume right with the wind…?

I am so good
WHERE DID YOU GO EAT PHILLIE?
He is missing one game. I rather him miss today’s game then have a recurring problem THE WHOLE YEAR. Do the math. He is the best switch-hitter in the game, he deserves the respect he has earned. Even if he isn’t hurt, I don’t want him playing in this cold weather. This will be the only cold game of the season. Rest up boy, get ready for the series opener where it’ll be 75 degrees!
The Phillies’ starting rotation.
Thank you, thank you…
think ol jonnie miller has learned jordans name yet…douche
I think schafer will be more comfortable in center at the Ted..alot more space to roam around out there
Miami, line drive to right field, first or 2nd row.
I’ve got to be honest. I didn’t think I’d hear Boog say “The Braves continue to show off the power” in the 5th inning of game 3 when this series started. Schafer and Mac lead the team in homers.
Oh-and-by-the-way: The offense is looking OK during Chipper’s day off…
Nate from NCState
Man I miss the days of TBS-Braves baseball.. good thing they have 5 different sets of reruns going everyday
How about Schafer’s Schiffers? We all dress up like supermodel, Claudia Schiffer. When he hits one, we all take our tops off and jump around.
April 8th, 20094:52 pm
Is this Phillies park a big homerun park? Anyone know?
Schafer has already hit more homeruns for the Atlanta Braves this year than Blanco did in 2008.
You do realize that Schafer missed 50 games last year right?
Yes the Braves are making a statement in this opening series …that would be …”The Braves are BACK, watch-out NL East !!”
i love that JV will throw a curve in any count
April 8th, 20094:53 pm
7 HR’s in 2.5 games. We’re on pace for ………………… calculating, calculating…………….454 Home Runs.
Not bad for a team with no power,
The folks questioning Schafer’s glove need to follow tic tac toe or chess. Athletics is not your thing. His glove/arm is real good.
supposed to be chilly Friday in the ATL for the opener. If I went, I would need to get a kitchen pass from the old lady. Cause after the game I know I will be haeaded to magic City
That HGH is some serious stuff!
“where did Schafe’s homer go out? left center right?
I would assume right with the wind…?”
Right field, yes.
When he homers, we go nuts.
April 8th, 20094:54 pm
Tom O’Hawke.. as long as it is all males.. i think we could get by with that..
My goodness: 7 HR in 23 innings … shame these Braves don’t have any power.
Let’s get 13 more outs and get back home 3-0 on the season.
The Scribe abides.
phillies fans on twitter are brushing this off as “we always suck in april” How cute.
javy alot better in the WBC..lets hope with warmer weather comes better command
Schafer’s nickname should be Wolverine! (Since Jon Miller called him Logan all night on ESPN)
April 8th, 20094:55 pm
ditto paul thanks
keylargo only if we play all 162 in this park lol
the Ted isn’t as friendly to the long ball, which is fine with this set of pitchers we have, especially Vazquez
April 8th, 20094:56 pm
so what do you guys have on the over under for schafer’s homers considering he only hit 12.. I think.. all of last year!
Not that many appearances for him last year, after missing 50 games. His HR rate stayed about the same as the year before, though, if remember right. He’s got the pop to hit 20, but he hasn’t had to make ML adjustments yet, either. Best we see how he handles that before projecting any stat for the year.
I’d just like to bring up what eatPhillie said on the previous blog
“Without Chipper, there goes 85% of your power. Sucks”
Yeah, Kentavo, you know that commercial where wolverine bursts out of the water with no shirt on looking all ripped? That was actually Schafer.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been much made of the Braves’ curveballs this season. Last season they entered with a rotation of Smoltz, Glavine, Hudson, Hampton, and Jurrjens. Jurrjens, Hampton, and Smoltz don’t throw curveballs and it’s a tertiary pitch at best for Hudson and Glavine. This year we’ve got Vazquez, Kawakami, and Lowe whose best or 2nd best pitches are all curveballs. Something new in Atlanta. I really like Kawakami’s get me over.
Is anybody going to pick up that wrapper that’s been floating around the infield since the 1st inning?
April 8th, 20094:57 pm
Nate, of course. I wouldn’t want to see the women get thrown out.
Can Vasquez can start throwing strikes again here? What the hell?
I don’t care, 9-3 is safe enough for me. I mean, I don’t think the offensive onslaught is letting up any time soon but Vasquez is tryin’ to let them back in it.
76 pitches for javy 47 strikes
Playing with fire walking all these people in that ballpark
If he gets out of this, I would go to the pen next inning
April 8th, 20094:58 pm
Boog is giving the Marlins a reach-around as usual.
I also don’t feel safe with our bullpen. They’re due to give up a couple runs real quick.
“phillies fans on twitter are brushing this off as “we always suck in april” How cute.”
Actually, that’s pretty much true. Their bats will get going when the weather heats up, but I do wonder about their pitching. Anyway, make hay while the sun is shining, Braves.
I’m starting to believe that McCann really does know it’s McFann’s birthday.
Is it crazy to think Schafer can hit 20+ HR’s? I realize any player, especially a rookie can go into slumps, but he’s so still and balanced with a great swing that just think he’ll stay pretty consistant.
Vazquez’ outing today reminds me of a Russ Ortiz outing when he was a Brave.
what’s the count?
April 8th, 20094:59 pm
2-1 on Ibanez
4 walks in the game for javy, seems like more though
2 of those balls to Werth were in the strike zone according to gametracker, and 3 of them were within Blanton’s “strike” zone….
When is Hudson coming back?
Nice play kotch, saved a run.
April 8th, 20095:00 pm
Kotchman can’t hit, but he has a nice glove
Way to bing back a Russ Ortiz take. King of the 4 run quality start
cabravesfan you are right i forgot right after i posted that, but throughout his minor league career the highest he hit was only 15 in one year. still… i guess i should go up on my home run expectations.. hopefully this doesn’t get his mind focused only on hitting the long ball though. he needs to be our leadoff hitter at some point
kotchman has the glove
Late summer I think, John.
jj had a handful of walks in his game as well…i think that both will get better handle as the weather warms
out of the inning
Blane Boyer up in the pen
Does anyone expect Anderson to last the entire season on the roster. I don’t.
April 8th, 20095:01 pm
The Phillies shouldn’t worry about their offense. They should worry about their rotation, which pretty much sucks after Hamels.
Oh, and they should worry about the Braves.
Corky Schafer just keeps proving he deserves to be here. Why Corky? because he keeps pulling them out his a@@. Kids great so far.
Sutton is great and so is the new man. Got the TV on mute just to hear Don.
April 8th, 20095:02 pm
he qualifies for the win now, send em out for the 6th and have the pen ready to go
Me either, Rob. Matt Diaz hits too well. I think it was last year when they showed him with a stat of something like 3rd highest overall batting average in the majors since 2005, just under A-roid and some other guy.
April 8th, 20095:03 pm
I know I am soooo happy that baseball season is here… I got nothing but love for the Braves….
Hudson coming back would be a good pick up in the summer. Get another quality pitcher without having to make a trade.
Ron in mobile
Took me a second to figure out who the other asian guy was in the dugout. Being an interperter has to be the coolest job ever
Anderson will make a great DH in the world Series
April 8th, 20095:04 pm
John, the most aggressive time-table has Hudson back in mid-August. Most likely late August or early September.
“Swing and a Drive…”
The Phils rotation sucks. Period. I can’t imagine how some of the pronosticators picked them so high. Last year was an aberration.
April 8th, 20095:05 pm
does anyone know what a strike is for this umpire. I know I have no idea
April 8th, 20095:06 pm
Dan, good point. Schafer’s also already hit as many homers as Francoeur hit after the All-Star break in 2008.
April 8th, 20095:07 pm
If anyone does know what a strike is for this umpire, you might want to let him know. Heaven knows he could use the help.
MLBTV just finished the bottom of the fifth as Gameday was finishing the top of the sixth. So at work, one can preview Gameday to see if you want to see the video.
April 8th, 20095:08 pm
In the WBC, Vazquez got a ton of GB outs, now he is getting tons of FB outs.
everything up in the zone right now
April 8th, 20095:09 pm
Boog just said Phillies hitting .166 against Braves starting pitching, so far.
Comeon, double play. Get that and you’ve got a “quality start”.
April 8th, 20095:10 pm
Maybe…to bad he got caught looking.
But who cares? 2-3 with a homer and 3 RBI? I’ll take that with no complaint.
JV is not getting the same corner calls the Phillies pitchers were getting….
April 8th, 20095:11 pm
One out to QS land…..
Schafer is on pace to hit 108 hr’s this year. Of course, that’s based on him playing all 162 games. Also, this is a hitter’s ballpark. So, more than likely, he won’t hit quite that many.
This game is almost as delicious as a good Philly Cheesesteak!!! :O)
April 8th, 20095:13 pm
this ump hates us
Vasquez has a wicked change…
