It’s Saturday and the last exhibition game of the year, and I’m posting a blog because DOB set the breakneck pace of a blog-a-day all spring on days the Braves had games. Who am I to break the streak now?
(Though, I’ll be honest. I actually thought about it, and instead of blogging, kicking back with a cup of coffee and a plate of breakfast here before the game. I’ve been up since 6 and ran 10 miles this morning. But hey, no excuses. Besides, guilt got the better of me.)
So where are we….Is it too early for a mood of the clubhouse update? Ah, what the heck. As much as players – and apparently beat writers – were worn out the last week or so of spring training, coming home to Turner Field got everyone abuzz again. And it’s a fun time of year to be in a clubhouse, especially now that cuts are over, and everyone is bopping around with the promise of a clean slate and a new season.
I’m sure DOB will set the tone tomorrow for the start of the season witih the Phillies and for now, I figured I’d wax a little more nostalgic on Jordan Schafer.
That’s part of the fun, seeing a guy like him make a major league roster, after all he dealt with last season and the 50-game suspension, and now here he is, having a hard time containing his smile. I figured the conversation he had with his dad was pretty special yesterday, so I asked him about it.
It started with a text message to his dad Dave after Schafer came out of Bobby Cox’s office, saying “I made it.” His dad texted back how proud he was. And then later, after last night’s game, there was the emotional phone call, with a few tears for both father and son.
“He’s been through a lot of stuff with me,” Schafer said. “He’s been there helping me out since I was little. In a way, it’s part of him. It felt like he made it too. It’s nice, he could be there and share that with me….
“It feels like I’m living a dream right now. I don’t think it’s really hit me yet, maybe tonight on the plane to Philly, maybe I’ll feel it, or when I step out there on the field.”
Schafer said he’s got 20-25 family members coming from Florida and Chicago to converge on Philadelphia for Opening Day.
One of his teammates who got a big kick out of all this was Matt Diaz, who lives in the Lakeland, Fla. area near the Schafers and has known Schafer since he was in the eighth grade and playing baseball with Matt’s youngest brother Jonny.
“I’m really excited for him,” Diaz said. “It reminds you of all the things you take for granted. He was asking me what do I do with my suitcase and stuff like that.”
Diaz saw the work Schafer did to get to this point up close, hitting with him over the winter at Winter Haven High School and at a warehouse with Schafer’s pitching machine.
“Mentally he went through a huge growing process,” Diaz said. ”How tough mentally he became this past year – that was evident. No flashy red glove, no flashy red spikes this year. He wore a collared shirt to the park. It was just the little things. Each little thing he did was the right thing and it showed a lot of maturity on his part.”
OK I’ve run out of time, so I’ll give you the lineup and say Chipper Jones is not playing today because he’s feeling under the weather, but he isn’t expected to miss the opener tomorrow in Philadelphia. He didn’t have to play today, so why push it, Bobby figured.
This gives you an idea what the lineup should look like without Brian McCann in it, with Garret Anderson moving into the cleanup spot.

Re: Jordan Schafer Nicknames
Was watching Fred Hickman and Brian Jordan talk about Jordan Schafer and they were trying to give him a nickname. ‘Air’ jordan was mentioned and quickly shot down, saying he had to earn his nickname first. Well, OK, I’ll take a stab at it.
How about this?

Maybe this is a little unreasonable of me… but I have just a bit of a problem with Boog. I mean, if you work for the Braves, shouldn’t you be just a little bit of a homer?
I disagree with Boog’s expectation that the Braves will miss the playoffs, and I think if everything’s close to equal, you’ve got to pick your team to do something. But that’s not what bothers me. What DOES bother me about Boog is that I don’t get the impression that he thinks of the Braves has HIS team. It seems like he considers the Braves to be the team he works for. No real allegiance. I don’t like that in a local announcer.
I don’t think an announcer should lose all objectivity and become a cheerleader. Not at all. But a little bit of allegiance would be nice. I think, through the years, Braves announcer have had a level of devotion to the Braves, while remaining realistic about the team and its strengths and weaknesses.
I don’t get the feeling from Boog that there’s any real devotion at all. Kind of a hired-hand mentality.

He doesn’t work for the Braves, KC. He works for the company that produces the broadcasts (Fox Sports Network, I believe). mbatl, I think you missed the point of my post. I said in passing that if all else is close to equal, I think it would probably be better for Braves announcers to show confidence in their team. But I don’t expect any announcer to say something they don’t believe, or to believe something that is unrealistic. I probably shouldn’t have even said that, because it apparently detracted from my core point, which is to say that my problem is not with Boog’s picks (even though I disagree), but with his lack of any sort of allegiance to the team he works with/for every day.
When Skip Caray thought the Braves sucked, he said so. When he thought the team had a chance but was going to have a tough time winning a division, he said so. And when the thought they would win it, he said that to. He was completely honest, but there was always a loyalty to what he considered to be HIS team.
I’d like to see a trace of that from Boog. That’s all I’m saying.

i really like boog, and joe is THE MAN. they are my absolute favorite broadcast team.
objectivly, its pretty hard to pedict the NL east. i do think this divsion will produce the wild card, and the braves, phils, and mets will be 1, 2, 3 in some order. i think it all comes down to health.
i dont think hamels is going to have a good year. i think he will only make around 20 starts, but i think the phils have the grit and great offense to keep them in it, even if hamels goes down.
santana is less likely to get hurt, in my opinion, but if he gets hurt, the mets will take a big hit. i think the mets biggest problem is the character of the team. i dont think they have a good one. my honest opinion is that david wright and delgado are lone bright spots in that area, and adding shef cant help. if delgado has a bad first half like last year, it could have lasting effects on the team.
the braves have to stay healthy, and a couple of guys need to break out, which i guess is just as likely not to happen as it is to happen. the bullpen needs to get back healthy…were coming into the season a little bit shaky in the bully.
it is defeinetly going to be an interesting race.

Like a lot of things, it’s probably changed a little, (or a lot) with the separation of team ownership and broadcasting rights, the team being covered by 2 or 3 different entities, each with their own b’casters, etc. I don’t know if we’ll ever see a team like Skip, Pete, Don and Joe in their day. Joe Simpson is the white version of Joe Morgan. Slightly more intelligent and doesn’t run his mouth quite as much, but pretty much Joe Morgan. Joe just isn’t very well educated on where baseball is today, he’s announcing like Bobby’s managing (like it’s 1980). I just got really fed up with Joe Simpson when he kept praising Francoeur for hitting balls out of the infield even though they would be lazy fly balls. He would say things like “he hit that well, but it was right at somebody”. No, Joe. He didn’t hit that well. And please stop quoting statistics that end with the words “Batted In” or “In Scoring Position”. I don’t know, I’d just like to get a little more intellectual substance from my broadcast than what Joe Simpson is capable of bringing to the table. On your “Boog isn’t a Braves announcer” point, though, I completely agree. He’s not a home-town announcer, really. He’s kind of an import. He doesn’t give the feeling he’s a Braves announcer, he gives the feeling that he’s a kind of journeyman that was hired to fill-in. I don’t like that aspect of Boog, I do like everything else about him, though. I think he’s pretty funny. And he’s very, very smart.

If KK says he never had 7 walks even in a full game, I figure this was just a fluke (until/unless we see it again in the next couple weeks).
As for Hanson, he’s still the best pitching prospect I’ve ever personally seen pitch. That breaking stuff of his is unlike anything I’ve witnessed. It’s like something coming to the plate at 85-90 mph and then about 3/4s the way there careens to the left and down! Like it hit something invisible in mid-air, just amazing. I have no idea how he does it or how anybody ever hits it. Reminds me of that goofy old Fred MacMurray movie who plays a professor/pitcher who invents some stuff to put on the ball that make the bat miss the ball. Some of ya’ll would like to hear Boog and Powell on the mic together, some thinks he’s an ESPN guy working for the Braves. Honestly, I would just like to see his chubby red headed a- announce for another team in the east since he praises every one of our rivals! He’s so annoying with his high pitch, screechy voice that I didn’t even watch most of that game today because of him.
It can’t be a good sign when “Mr. Homer” himself, Joe Simpson doesn’t pick his boys to win the division. I’m kidding on that one a little, but our guys aren’t getting much, if any love for ‘09.

It wasn’t Fred McMurray who invented the substance that repelled baseballs. The movie was It Happens Every Spring. May have been an actor named Ray Milland? I just know it wasn’t MacMurray. You’ve confused that role with that of the man who invented Flubber. But I get your point that Hanson’s stuff is quite good.

AdirondackDave, you said you can’t see how anybody can even hit a curveball like Hanson’s, but it was obvious that the Tigers hitters were waiting for that curve today, even hit a good one for a single. The fastball was too straight and hit out by a good one in Guillen.

Good to see that the two boot lickers, William & James were able to get their heads up out of Francoeur’s lap long enough to say nah, nah, nah, to all the “Frenchy haters.” I doubt many hate Francouer (although I do not particularly like him), they just hate his performance (primarily 2008, but his overall lack of progress as a player).
After seeing Frenchy in ST, I came away encouraged and hopeful that he may be able to make adjustments to save his career. I think that his success will be pivitol for the Braves to be successful.
Regardless, let Francouer prove himself, don’t be such sappy boot lickers.

PWH, I will say this, though, that I tend to agree with mbatl on the actual content spewed by the talking heads. SABR is great stuff, and I like some of it myself; heck, I think some of the innovations actually have merit, LOL. But there isn’t nearly enough market penetration among casual fandom for that kind of commentary to play. You’d just get glazed looks and a hand searching for the remote. Me, I’d settle for an “analyst” who can speak coherently, if not insightfully, about the game, to the point that I can reasonably assume he’s watching the same one I am.

Bravesfan1124: I’m at the airport now, watching Mich St-UConn game. I would’ve been in Philly to watch the Villanova-UNC game, but Delta eliminated my 6:55 p.m. originally scheduled flight (and didn’t notify me), and I believe the 8:30 or 8:45 or whatever it was that they switched me to got delayed or something. The end result: I’m on a 9:45 p.m. flight. Great. Glad I got here at 5:30.
Instead of watching Villanova-UNC in Philly (where Villanova is, of course, located), I’m watching MSU-UConn here in the Crown Room with a bunch of MSU fans (they’re alums, couple of them wearing Spartans gear. I’m pulling for MSU just because they beat my guys, so I’d like to see them at least advance to the final so I feel a little better about losing in the Sweet 16).

I never said it’d be a good decision to use a pure sabermetrician as a color analyst for the Braves’ broadcast. I just said I’d prefer it. For me. Not anyone else. It’s an opinion, nothing more. And you’re right, nobody would watch the Braves if they had someone who was just rambling about things like VORP, WARP, Win Shares, and Runs Created the whole time. I’d prefer to have an announcer that would throw one of them out every now and then (Boog once threw out John Dewan’s +/-). And this is only MY opinion. Not what I would consider a good business move.

I must differ with KC & TNBrian about Boog Sciambi. Boog is by far the best announcer that covers the Braves in terms of knowledge of the game, professionalism, and breadth of player & team experience. He is able to provide a more accurate perspective because he can be objective.
These are some of the same skills and experiences that DOB brings to the table and one of the reasons we enjoy his work so much. DOB is not a Braves fan, he is a baseball fan and journalist. He may be a fan of individual players because he knows them or a fan of individual skills, but he does not actively root for the Braves. That is for us to do.
Appreciate the professionalism of a DOB or Boog, because we may not have them around forever.
I even prefer my fellow fans to be a bit more objective, just makes the game of baseball so enjoyable.

I have an idea for a Joe Morgan game. We could each pick how many minutes into the broadcast it will take for immodest and insecure Joe to make reference to his Hall of Fame credentials.
My bet would be during Chipper Jones first at bat that Joe will mention that Chipper took another HOF step with the signing of the extension this week. He will do this just so he can make reference to his own HOF (and by inference, Godlike qualities) cred. I say 13 minute mark.

I feared folks would distort the reality of pete and skip by overly romanticizing them to suit whatever the agenda of the moment is. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to do so. They were the absolute best. There’ll never be another tandem like those two. However, let’s not insult their memory, reality, and intelligence by acting like they were two retarded goober homers who drooled tomahawks out of their mouths.
When he was alive, folks loved and hated Skip because he was an unrepentant ahole who never once hesitated to tell it like he saw it. Sadly, I don’t think there’ll be another skip. Like his daddy, he was one of a kind. When you get the likes of him, you’d be wise to cherish it.
When he was still broadcasting, no one was more objective, prepared, and professional than pete. That could be frustrating as hell sometimes too. You often wished the professor was more of the crazy, buffoonish, drunken homer uncle broadcaster, but that’s not who he was, and he wasn’t gonna sell out his broadcasting principles to entertain the masses.
To me, if anyone broadcasting today is gonna turn into what the professor was, it’s boog. Both are well prepared and well read. Both know their history, both love stats, both love objectivity. For generational reasons, although he had statistical research leaking out of his every pore, pete wasn’t as into all the sabermetric stats as boog. If he had been of boog’s generation, you best believe he would’ve been. And although he likely wasn’t a SABR member, it’s wrong to think pete wasn’t a SABR kind of guy. After all, SABR stands for Society for American Baseball Research. Who researched the history and present of the game more than the professor? Who sought the truth and objectivity more than pete?
Also, did they root for the Braves? Hell yeah they did. They’d also been doing Bravos games forever. It was therefore real for them to do so. But let’s also remember that although they rooted for the Braves, neither one ever blindly pimped themselves out to be yes men who rubber stamped their approval of everything the Braves did. That’s what made them the best.
Besides, do you really want boog or powell or chip to come in here and act like they’ve been a member of your family and the Braves family for an entire generation? That wouldn’t be real, and if they tried to do so, it would seem phony …. or Rathburnish. If you want them to become homers who really root for your team, give ‘em enough time to become a friend of ours, rather than just a friend of mine. They’ve got the talent, just give ‘em time to become the soundtrack of your Southern summers.

Question for all you pickers out there (flange1, Wayne, and even Grinch (if you’re still alive out there) that means you!):
I’m probably going to have to buy a new guitar soon (the truss in my Kramer seems to have gone kaput), and I need advice. As a lefty, I have very few choices in my price range (3-700 dollars) so my choices are basically the Epi Les Paul Standard, the Standard Strat (Mexican), a Jackson Dinky, or a narrow assortment of ESPs or one or two Ibanez’s. I’d love to get another Kramer or a Charvel, but those are almost nonexistent these days. And I play classic rock, metal, blues, and jazz (so clean tones are important to me, but I do want a good distorted tone too). If anyone has any advice for me, I’d love to hear it!

Actually, if anyone could give me advice on perhaps fixing my old guitar as well I’d love to hear it (I’ll keep the story brief!). I have a Kramer Pacer that I’m pretty sure is an American model that just buzzes like crazy between the 4th fret and the nut. It most pronounced if it play a note/chord between the 4th and 9th frets, where I’ll play, say an Emaj7 on the 7th fret and hear an awful buzzing (and LOUD) near the nut/first few frets. I’ll take it in for new strings, adjust the action, fret dressings, the works and the noise will go away for about a week, slowly building until it is again unbearable. Several technicians have told me that they believe the truss rod is loose, broken, or disconnected. If I sit the guitar on my lap with the neck pointing toward the ceiling and the frets facing me and shake it towards/away from me, I hear a loud rattling near the 2nd fret/nut area. If I shake it side to side, I hear it as well but it is quiter. The headstock, tuning pegs, etc. are all tight, so they’re not what is rattling. The guitar guy told me that if the truss was broken/disconnected, it would be very tough to fix.
Sorry for non-baseball stuff, but I’m cheap so I want to hear all possible opinions before spending my loot.

Rob, no writers fly team charters anymore. Those days are long since passed. We have to write stories after games. Team heads to airport on getaway day within an hour of game’s end. That, among many other reasons, would make it quite difficult to follow the old arrangement of writers on team charters, which really hasn’t happened since well before I began covering major league ball 15 years ago, except in isolated cases.

Like I said, I think Boog is a good announcer, but can any of you imagine an outsider coming into the Mets broadcast booth an praising the other 4 NL east team, especially Atl., and not thiers? (TNBrian)
I’m guessing you never listened to Bob Murphy or Ralph Kiner announce a Mets game in the 90s when the Braves were the best and the Mets the worst. Living in NYC, Boog, however, likely heard them everyday and learned how to be real with the fans when announcing a game.

“I don’t think a 90-92 win season for us is a crazy thought. A wild card, playoff spot is almost expected in my eyes.”
I don’t think a 90 win season is crazy, either, but I wouldn’t go nearly as far as saying that I expect a playoff slot, or even that I expect the Braves to finish 2nd in the division. That’s a bold thing to say when the Mets and Phillies are in the same division. I expect the Braves to be competitive, and I think they’ll have a shot at any of the top 3 slots if there’s a breakout year for a guy or two.

Braveheart, no. I never listened to those two, but it’s different for me because we aren’t the worst in the division, while the Mets were back then. Personally, if the Braves were as bad as Mets in the 90’s, it just doesn’t matter as much to me. Sorry Braveheart, but that’s how I feel.
Just like in your earlier post, you said Boog would look phony if he came across as a Braves “homer”. Well he seeems like, to me, that he goes out of his way to be the complete opposite, which makes him just as phony. Whether I sound immature or not, I just don’t like him that much, especially with his screechy voice.

Shamus, I don’t know if the frets have ever been replaced. I’m not a good enough guitar tech aficionado to know if there is a significant amount of wear. The last time I took it in the tech told me the next was slightly twisted, and he took off the neck but said he was unable to tell if the truss was disconnected or broken in the middle. The redid the action and did a fret dressing, etc. and it sounded great for a day or two, and then the buzz began to build up bit by bit over the next few days, and within a week and a half it was too much again.

Shamus, I’m sorry, I’m reading my old post and I said a fret dressing was done. It was not. It was just a polishing/clean up type deal. My bad. I went and looked and there isn’t much wear. Some of the higher frets are flattened a bit due to bending, but nothing serious. No major grooves or anything. Like I said, I don’t know how the frets on a 20 year old guitar are supposed to like, but they look all right to me, and neither the luthier I took the guitar to nor my teacher found anything particularly distressing about them. I’m really new to the whole guitar maintenance thing (I’ve only been playing a couple of years), so forgive me if my anwers sound novice.

Braveheart, there is one nit to pick on the methodolgy in the data-gathering for the defensive stats. By necessity, there must be a large number of eyes grading each play, since every play of every game is being tracked. Are all those eyes qualified to make the determinations needed for the observation? Are they trained, and is the training rigorous and objective? Will two different observers grading the same player and play always supply the same result? That kind of thing…
It’s just my background and nature to sweat the details of the data, LOL. I’m coming around (a little) to the value of defensive metrics, but, on occasion, I’ll see a value on a player which seems totally opposed to observation; not in a matter of degree (good, but not quite as good), but total (seems good, really bad). That kind of polarity always make me step back a little from a total embracing.

It is hard to compare announcers when you reflect back on Skip and Pete. They both were really entertaining.Skip very much also was a fan of the Braves and showed his love in his disgust sometimes,in his humor and his excitement.Pete was quieter, more professional with a more analytical style. When I listen to Braves games now I really miss Pete and Skip.

Good morning from Philly on the day everything begins to count. Remember what KJ hit this spring? Or Lowe’s strikeout total in Grapefruit League play? Or even Ryan Howard’s spring home-run total? Neither do I. And beginning today, no real need to know. (For the record, I think Howard hit 10 homers. Or so.)
By the way, on the last Saturday of exhibition games, ragged starting pitching was the order of the day in the NL East: Kawakami was horrid, O. Perez walked four and failed to make it out of the first inning, and Hamels gave up two homers and six earned in five innings, including a bomb by ex-Phil Pat Burrell.

The NL east will be a battle of nutrition throughout the season. The Braves have the best and deepest rotation in the division. The Mets and Phillies have the better offensive attack, but the Braves have a good lineup as well. The Phillies and Mets must be concerned with the health of their aces. I have concerns over our bullpen, but I believe Boyer, Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzalez; if healthy should be above average. I am optimistic that this season will be the start of another historic division title run.

When I first started watching baseball in 1989, the Yankees, Braves, and to an extent Mets either sucked or were on the decline. I didn’t follow the Braves games back at the Ted the last two days but I did see a blurb about Kawakami not piching well and walking guys. The reason I bring this up was the alarming amount of guys walked in the two games the Mets played at their new park the last two days. It was by both teams. The Red Sox walked 10 guys Friday night -some pitches were questionable imo.It looked to me like the pitchers were really being squeezed, much more so than was being done in Florida just days earlier. Both teams pitchers were looking in quizzingly on some of the calls and the catchers were double pumping throws back like, “wait, you called that a ball?” Same thing yesterday.
Did you guys see any of this in the Braves games, Friday or Saturday? I’m just hoping that we’re not getting an early season crackdown by the umpires on the strike zone.

Anders the strike zone was tight for Kawakami, but not out of line. As you know when a pitcher has poor control, he actually gets progressively worse calls and this did occur. KK just did not have it yesterday. I believe that one of the key reasons the Braves have these exhibitions at the Ted is to help the new roster members get over the first game jitters in their new park. Looks like KK needed it. Glad it did not count.

Anders, I wasn’t paying close attention to how the strikezone was being called, but didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Kawakami was just all over the place. I think announcers were right… just nervous energy. First time pitching in a new home park would give anyone butterflies, but if you’re coming all the way from Japan…

Anders, no one let anything slip away where TBS was concerned. The reality was that the rates were steadily slipping, year after year. Didn’t have anything to do with the team, because the ratings decline started long before these last few seasons.
The TV baseball landscape changed. The TBS Braves games were originally so highly rated because it was the only national baseball on TV at the time. But then came the network TV game of the week, the weekly ESPN games… and ultimately, the satellite packages.
At a certain point, TBS execs had to look at and realize that Braves baseball was no longer the ratings beast it once was – or anything close to it. And once TBS and the Braves fell under different ownership, it was an easy call.
Sucks for Braves fans. It was great to have that national coverage, and the revenue and payroll flexibility that came along with it… but that’s life.

I was just reading an article about catchers’ defensive abilities, which rated two Braves, Benedict and Crandall, as among the best of all time. Another ex-Brave, Bob Uecker, had the worst year of all time, but that might have been due to Phil Niekro.
They are offering tracking of games and an incredible archive of articles. For instance, there’s a feature about Schafer which projects him to have a so-so year, .270 with 15 HR and 20 SB, but called his defense excellent and said he’s a solid pick now, but a better one for the long run.

The Braves season preview video (from MLB) on Braves.com says “the [pitching] staff is not as deep as it has been in past years”…
Huh?
This staff is probably the deepest it’s been since the 90’s.
I also heard a national sports media person (don’t remember the name) saying the Braves outfield didn’t figure to be much better than it was last year. What??? If Francoeur doesn’t bounce back AND Shafer falls on his face this year… if BOTH of those things happen, there’s a chance he could be right. But that seems highly unlikely.
If you look at Anderson’s numbers last year vs. righties, coupled with Diaz’s numbers over the past couple years vs. lefties… and average that out over 570 at-bats, you’ll have .305, 20 HR, 90 RBI. Even if the Braves don’t get quite that much production out of Left, they’re going to get close. Anderson is a nice addition, and the return of a healthy and sharp Matt Diaz is just as big. Left Field is GOING to be a very productive position… night and day from last year.
Also, if you trade the ‘08 version of Francoeur for the ‘07 version (or something even better), that’s like signing a big free agent bat over the winter. And we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m better Shafer will be an offensive upgrade over what they had in Center last year.
This is one of the reason’s why I don’t put any stock in the opinions of national sports media types. They just don’t pay much attention.

Bummer that we lost yesterday. I was kind of hoping we would win that game and finish 11 games over .500 for the spring. Also, Xavier has said if Miller leaves, they would promote from within.

I see ERIC O’FLAHERTY won out in the three man derby to replace WIL OHMAN. I said he LOOKED good with his form. Now if the pitches are as good we’ll all be sayin’ WIL WHO in no time. GOOD luck E O’F. Go make O’B. proud. And GO BRAVES. 6:30 hours and counting.

Glad it’s not gonna be wet up there till after game-time. Rain-outs are really a letdown, specially on opening day. Unless you’re fried to perfection, of course.
I’ve been looking for the international version of the Glen Campbell compendium/magnum-opus boxed-set, for my collection.
Y’all thought I was serious, didn’t you? lol

Thank goodness for Anderson and Diaz because I can’t spell our right fielder or center fielders names. Jones was a heck of a lot easier to spell.

Beautiful day here in Blacksburg, Virginia, where campus is abound with frizbees, footballs, and dogs. My buddies want me to join them on the basketball court. My girlfriend wants to take our mountain bikes out and enjoy a few hours trail riding on Brush Mountain. Me, well, all I want is to fast forward the clock to 8:00 ET and park myself in front of the biggest TV I can find. Shame on me.

Take it from me, do the mountain bike thing. Wear her out! She’ll take a nap during the ball game, or watch Desperate Housewives. Then….

Blouser, if Hamels was pitching today, your guess of Kotchman would have great merit. Something about Hamels pitches that Kotch seems so like.
Well… I guess I will see if I can now get a post on the ole’ blog. I have tried to reply to several posts a few days back, but the blog ate up my post. Then a my modem died so it took me quite a while to get back up again. Anyway, I may be just babbling away for nothing….
Maybe it will post this time.

DOB, I once again recommend to you the cheesesteaks at D’Allessandro’s in Manayunk (not sure you had a chance to try them out last year). IMHO, the best in the city, but slightly off the beaten path, so no one outside Philly knows about them. It’s about a fifteen minute drive from downtown when there’s no traffic.

Well, yeah . . .
But who ever referred to Andruw as “Jones”?

This observation from Mark Bowman was very reminiscent of something Pete van Wieren might have come up with:
… This will be the fourth consecutive season the Braves have opened on the road, and their only wins during this span came in games started by Lowe and Myers. They defeated Lowe’s Dodgers to open the 2006 season and Myers’ Phillies in 2007.
