Apropos of nothing, I just picked up (and finished) Matt McCarthy’s Odd Man Out, the tale of a former Yale pitcher’s one season in rookie ball in Provo, Utah, before he entered Harvard Medical School. Fun read, and, despite some controversy about minor facts, it has an air of truth around it.

One caveat: if you are a Casey Kotchmann fan, you might want to skip it. His father was the manager of Provo Angels, and he comes across as a decent man but a bit … uh… INSANE, at least at certain times.

Kentucky, in college basketball, like UNC, Duke, Kansas and UCLA, is like what the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox are to baseball or what Alabama, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Nebraska are to college football or what the Cowboys and Steelers are in the NFL. Take all the shots you want now while they’ve bottomed out. That’s fine ’cause when they get down, there’s nothing uglier, but when they’re soaring, no one flies higher.

Think about it this way: there is hardly anyone in sports history whose shadow looms larger than Bear Bryant …… Bear Bryant however had to leave Kentucky because he couldn’t stand being overshadowed by Kentucky basketball. That’s how big Kentucky basketball is. Kentucky basketball is bigger than even Bear Bryant. Now, that’s amazing!

DOB: Don’t know how you put up with folks like Dawson…maybe, just better to ignore.

Noticed that Josh was 0 for 2 yesterday, but had two walks and stole a base for the Tigers.

On another front saw where the real “Corky”, always great at defense for the Braves, is hitting .355 for the White Sox.

Wish the former Braves all the success in the world, but believe the Braves generally make all the right moves.

Know how busy you are during the game, but greatly appreciate your efforts to keep the bloggers posted on activity when you can. So, wanted to say “thanks” in advance.

Great story on Chipper, BTW, terrific move by the Braves. Just wish they would go ahead and name the CF starter so “whoever” could get past the “wondering” and get on with getting ready for the opener.

richard dawsonAnd that torrid hitting by Chipper? Done in about 2/3 of a season on average. Pujols is racking up 150+ games per season.

thats not really fair. chipper has played OVER 2/3 of the season every single year since he came up. (2/3 of the season is 108 games, by the way).

i dont know what you think youre adding. everyone is the world knows that chipper’s biggest problem is staying the field. when he is on the field, he is arguably the best hitter in the game. so, he got about $14mil per on his extension. dont you think if he was a guy who still played 150+ games he would have gotten manny ramirez money? i do. your “balance” is unneeded on this blog.

by the way, im hoping for a 2007 type season from chipper, .340 avg, 29 HR, 109 RBI in 135 games.

Well I might as well get the fight started…as much as I would like to be optimistic about the upcoming season, I’m afraid that I’ve become jaundiced. What I see is an infield with a 1B that can’t hit a lick…a 2B that can’t field a lick…a SS that’s still got a lot of demons in his head…and a 3B that has more bad obliques than the rest of the team ‘has’ obliques…and a catcher that has to hit balls to the wall in order to make it to second base, can’t get his un-protected body parts behind his pads and doesn’t block in-the-dirt pitches any better than I did when I was in LL. An outfield that hit all of 20 HRs last year and doubt if they’ll top 30 this year…a RF who has somehow lost a half-dozen steps of speed…a CF that I think is gonna have the kind of ‘attitude’ that the Braves won’t put up with very long…a RF that probably wishes he was still in California and another that runs so hot and cold it’s hard to know if he’s on the left or the right…a bullpen that looks about as fra-gee-lay as they did going into last year…and a starting staff that, at least, should earn their money (unlike last year’s when the Braves paid some $30 million to pitchers while not pitching), whether or not they win games will depend on the offense and defense.

Sorry, but given my performance in the NCAA pools, I thought these predictions just might mean we’ve got good chance to win it all this year.

Cameron

April 1st, 2009
10:39 am

The more I think about it, the more I think the Braves are going to win the division. Two reasons why: Johan Santana and Cole Hamels.

Elbow sitffness is not something to joke about. If you remember, before Mike Hampton had to get TJ, Tim Hudson, and Soriano, and Moylan, they all complained about elbow stiffness, or soreness. Elbow soreness is rarely something that comes from a sorearm, tired arm, or dead arm. It is usually a precursor to something more serious.

I could be wrong, but I bet Hamels and Santana are on and off the DL all year. Maybe even having to get Tommy John. If you hadn’t noticed, they are about the only quality pitchers on those two staffs. Without them, those teams are about 6-10 games worse. That would definitely open the doors for the Braves.

dirty dawg,

If you could back up any of your claims with any type of evidence I’d be impressed. You basically ranted a few paragraphs of your own thoughts rather than realistic arguments. Don’t represent Braves fans in such an idiotic way, leave that up to Mets and Phillies fans. In regards to KJ unable to field his position, and Kotchman not able to hit a lick. On the contrary, KJ has developed into an average fielding 2b, after changing his whole career around by switching positions. Kotchman has shown the ability to hit for a very good average by hitting .297 in 2007. Last year was marred by the trade accompanied with his mother’s illness. If you had any indication of such, you would understand why he struggled mightily in the last few months of the season. To top it off, you say “whether or not they win games will depend on the offense and defense” I’ll assume you mean “to win games in baseball, you need to score more runs than the other team offensively, and not let up more runs than you score defensively” Real intelligent comment dude. If your negativity exists within you, just keep it to yourself. This year’s squad is very promising, maybe not realistic to think of having such high expectations, BUT promising and talented nonetheless.

How can the Braves even justify putting Blanco in CF when Schafer is hitting .360 and Blanco .111, and Schafer is superior defensively. Also Blanco has options. It would be a slap in the face to Schafer to give Blanco the job after Schafer worked so hard. I know he probably can’t say it’s Schafer’s, but why not just announce it already. Bear Bryant’s shadow didn’t “loom large” until after he left Kentucky and became a legend at Alabama, so don’t suggest that a legend had to leave because Kentucky b-ball was so big. I’m not saying Kentucky basketball isn’t big, because it is; I’m saying Bear left for a better program. (Kentucky football- historically bad)
I would argue that Notre Dame football might not return to what it once was, despite ESPN’s best efforts. They continue to have top recruiting classes and they are still losing. You cant compare ND football and Kentucky bball right now. Maybe after one or two bad years from ND, but not this long stretch.

For the record, Bryant left Kentucky for Texas A&M, not Alabama — he went there after A&M (first season in Tuscaloosa as head coach was 1958).
