I like Hanley too. He is hitting 3rd this year so his RBI’s should go up. You can’t go wrong with either one but Hanley plays the premium position. That’s why I like him.

Plus there’s tons of good 1Bs. There’s only one elite SS, 2 great SS, and the rest is just okay

Why are we trading an outfielder with a 300 average and speed when we have a black hole in the line up playing right.
Put Diaz in right, put Kelly Johnson back in right, or play 5 infielders until Frenchy learns the strike zone. I’ve got season tickets but I cant watch!

No Pujols didn’t fix it. He had the same surgery as Soriano and Glavine to move the nerve but he will eventually have to have full blown TJ surgery.

I drafted a team this past weekend, and I’ve got Halladay, Peavy, Webb, Lincecum, and Scott Baker as my starters, along with K-Rod, Lidge, Valverde, Frank Francisco, and Chad Qualls as relief pitchers.

I’d go with Hanley first pick. First base is so deep, and even though you’ll pass on Pujols, there’s still plenty of 1Bs who can provide your team with HRs, RBIs, average, etc. Not so many shortstops who can provide what Hanley, Reyes, or Rollins can.

Surely not $14M for Chipper over 3 years, could only be that with incentives based on appearances and even then that is a lot of budget, was expecting something more like $10M per.

AdirondackDave

Steve in Ohio — Good to hear the Braves are near extending Chipper. Bowman’s guestimate of 14M per sounds high to me, though. Considering he’s a 120-130 game player I was figuring it would start around 12 and finish around 10M when he’s pushing 40. I’m a big Chipper fan but 14M per is a lot of dough in this economy for an aging icon. We’ll see, I guess.

I’m cool with giving Chipper the gold watch package. He’s earned it…played thru some injuries, restructured his contracts, team guy, yadda yadda yadda. cabravesfan and spotts — well, for one, it’s an 8-team league, so the competition isn’t as deep. my offense isn’t terrific, but it’s not bad — Mike Napoli (catcher), Adrian Gonzalez (1B), Dan Uggla (2B), Jose Reyes (SS), Aubrey Huff (3B), Nate McLouth/Ryan Ludwick/Corey Hart (OFs), and Johnny Damon (utility). With the exception of Reyes, all of those guys are pretty second-rate, but still decent, offensive players.

Nice to hear about Chipper, who has played his hand patiently, like Glavine did.

I say we overspend on every icon for the next fifty years, just to p*ss Smoltz off. And every time we sign one, in the press confrence Wren should say “there are just certain guys you make a high priority, if they’re healthy and not asking you to believe in their ability based on their own gut feelings and so forth… and if their ego is reasonable and they haven’t had shoulder surgery and all… those guys you try and get back. Those guys are hard to replace.”

I heard an interview with Tom Glavine today on 680 the Fan. He said his arm was feeling pretty bad during the first part of the spring but it’s feeling fine now. He said he’s able to go out and feel good about what he’s going to be able to do every day, unlike last year when sometimes he was experiencing too much pain to be able to even feel good about pitching. He said as long as he’s able to locate his pitches and change speeds he’ll be fine. He’s in the 79-81 zone right now and he’d like to build his arm strength back up to where he can throw 83-84, but if it doesn’t happen he says he’ll still be able to pitch effectively. Overall, he seemed very optimistic. He’s pitching Wednesday and then in 2 minor league rehab starts before he makes his start for the big club on April 18th. He’ll throw 60 pitches (~5 innings) on Wednesday.

If Wren can fit the Chipper deal into the budget, then I guess its OK. We’ll see the real numbers soon enough – right now, its just speculation… Anyway, good to hear that the Braves locked him up (assuming it happens).

I don’t mean to sound down about this deal – its great for the fans. I just don’t want it to reduce the future fiscal flexibility of the team. Wren has proven to be rather shrewd so far, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt in terms of how this effects the team’s future payroll.
