Darrow is a sidearmer who throws 90-94 with heavy sink. Had TJ surgery a few years ago.
Wren said in past few days they determined CF job would go to Schafer or Blanco, so they stepped up calls on Anderson and found couple teams interested. Detroit talks heated up yesterday.
Just talked to Josh, he was classy as always, but did say he thought Braves probably knew what they wanted to do entering spring training (I don’t think he’s right on that one, since everything I heard from team officials before spring was they preferred to have Schafer start out at Triple-A).
Fact is, Schafer’s surpassed expectations this spring. As I wrote yesterday, heard from someone who should know that Braves were going with Schafer and would option Blanco to Triple-A and outright Anderson if they couldn’t trade him and they got him through waivers.
Frank said just now in announcing the trade that Braves would likely take an extra reliever to start the season, not carry both Schafer and Blanco on 25-man.
DOB, Tim Hudson didn’t freak out on you or anything like that, did he? I mean, after all, yesterday, you said you thought that Schafer would be the CF. Now, less than 24 hours later, Anderson is traded.
We all realize that you have all the power in the world, and when under your blogging “spell”, Frank Wren has little choice as to do what you type (kind of like Reggie Jackson in the first Nake Gun…..“Must KILL Frank Drebin…”
Fact is, Schafer’s surpassed expectations this spring. As I wrote yesterday, heard from someone who should know that Braves were going with Schafer and would option Blanco to Triple-A and outright Anderson if they couldn’t trade him and they got him through waivers. (DOB)
DOB just had to go there. Just had to mention where Blanco may or may not end up. Somewhere Tim Hudson is surely seething
DOB, are you concerned about our run production? After we’ve gotten Chipper and Mac back, we’ve pretty much lost every game. What happened to our bats?
GSU – Lee — You may be right but I’m still a little concerned about not having that additional big bat I thought we were going to acquire this year. Reason is that Chipper and Mac are going to miss a lot of games and that’s when we will be most vulnerable. In this tough NL East, another strong RH bat looks important to me. Not saying Braves won’t compete as-is, but I’d feel alot better if Frank could pull off another deal.
Not really. A lot of the games we have lost have been on the back of bullpen guys fighting for a spot. (Like the two lefties and Acosta, Bennet) not most of the actual BP guys themselves.
I was feeling pretty good about the 2009 season until I realized that we still have to depend on the likes of Acosta, Bennett and Boyer who accounted for 15 losses among them in 2008) after our starters leave the game. Now I’m worried big time….
Yes it is very alarming how many games we have lost here recently. Now that teams are starting to actually play their major league players – our bullpen keeps giving it up.
Well it looks like I’ll be getting a Schafer player t-shirt on my annual trip to the Ted in July from Chicago. Hopefully he’ll be in the running for ROY and not back in you know where. Just kidding, I have a feeling with Jordan’s work ethic he will be a great ballplayer.
ive caught Darrow in a bunch of pens and his is sick. Slider breaks out of this work and he throws 92-94 with a lot of life. also has a nasty change. GREAT pick up
Rudy Darrow? Is this one of these things where we are trying to make them happy because they got screwed in the Renteria trade? Maybe he’s good, his minor league ERA’s certainly aren’t horrible.
Wil – yes, but what about our run production? it’s been slim to nil with the exception of that one 5 run game we had. otherwise, we’ve just about been shut out
Acosta and BP sucks. He can’t even pitch 1 inning against Red Socks sub’s and he loses the lead. It is not going to matter rather we play well or not, our BP will be losing enough games for the Braves to miss the playoffs again!!
Correct, the run production this year is going to be down. The Braves made very little attempt to bring in a bat to make up for the loss of Tex’s production. Look for a lot of low scoring games with our bullpen giving up many leads in 2009.
I know nothing about Rudy Darrow, but dealing with Dave Dombrowski always turns out bad for them and good for us, that guy’s an idiot. Darrow has good numbers and we needed to get rid of Anderson. I’m pumped about this move, great job Wren. Bring on Schafer, baby.
Has Darrow had any experience closing? Anyone else out there a little usettled with Soriano? I love his intensity, but have to worry about the injury factor. who would be our closer if he goes down?
he played at the same college as me but was drafted the yr b4 i got there. he came back for the 2 yrs i was there b/c he was finishing up school. i was the catcher i i caught most of his pens when he was getting ready for the season. he is a hard nosed guy that works his butt off
Not feeling THAT great about the trade. Darrow has only pitched 13 2/3 innings abovr A ball. He had a teammate at Toledo named Casey Fien who looks better. If I am a Tigers fan I’m looking at the stats for both darrow and Anderson and thinking the Tigers got the better of it. I DO like going for young pitcher though.
the man: “WE JUST DONT HAVE ANY RELIEF PITCHING!!”
You mean except for Mike Gonazalez, Peter Moylan, Blaine Boyer, Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo (if they choose to put in in the ‘pen), and if healthy, Rafael Soriano?
So I wonder who’s gonna lead off now…I don’t know if they’d give that spot to Schafer right away. May bat him 8th and then move him up once he settles in.
Don’t blame Boyer for yesterday. He got squeezed a bit on the leadoff walk, but the 2 infield hits were both dribblers. Nobody had a good swing against him. Boyer has been effective in every outing this spring including yesterday. Acosta has not been effective in any recent outing.
Gonzalez has not been consistent yet…..and 2 guys do not make a bullpen….Carlyle/Campillo are battling for one stop…at best you have 3 good pitchers in the pen…we need 6 or 7 good arms.
So I just got back from talking to Kawakami, and I hear that O’Flaherty showed today why Braves are comfortable with him as their lefty — four strikeouts in six batters, and got out of nasty jam, eh?
Good job mr. Wren. Now I think it’s a safe bet to say Schafer is on the big club, and Blanco goes to AAA.
Now the question becomes who bats leadoff? Schafer is the player with most speed on the team, but he does have the tendecy to strikeout a lot. Will Kelly or Yunel leadoff? They both have high OBP’s, but really have not aclimated well to the leadoff spot in either of the last two seasons.
Can Acosta be sent to AAA? If so he will be there with Boyer Carlyle and Logan or Flantery being the 3 MR. Campillo doing some LR and spot starting. Soriano and Moylan setting up for Gonzo. I know they’re going to carry an extra reliever til Glavine starts, but I still think it’d be Bennet over Acosta.
I’d say there is a good chance that Acosta will be on the major league roster. He is one of “Bobby’s Boys”. A smart manager would send his A55 down but we all know about Bobby. Once you are one of “his boys” you can do no wrong.
In 1995 we didn’t have a single player with more than 27 home runs and no one with 100 RBI. We didn’t have a 20-game winner either. Now obviously those numbers are skewed by the strike-shortened season (Maddux would have definitely gotten 20 wins and McGriff would have hit 30) but the team only hit .250, what matters the MOST is pitching, which right now is shaping up ok for us. And I agree with you to some degree, and would absolutely love to have Maggs if we could get him, but I think we have enough in-house options to win.
With Schafer’s work ethic I can see him in the video room before every game studying pitchers with Chipper and Mac. I think he’s going to be even better when he starts the season. Mac has always said the reason he’s such a polished hitter is because of Chipper teaching him how to study pitchers that he faces. I see Schafer as the same kind of learner.
Just curious, Did Morton pitch yesterday in a minor league game, and, if so, does that affect the clock starting on his DL stint. If not, does the clock start from his one spring training inning?
So, if the starters end up giving you ONE extra inning per game over last year, and IF Moylan and Soriano are able to contribute similarly to their history (when healthy), do you not see how we could have a decent bullpen this year?
Acosta was supposed to be the savior a year ago.
I think with Gonzo, Soriano, Moylan, Boyer, Carlyle, Campillo, Bennett, Acosta, O’Flaherty, Logan and Bueno; we have the makings of a good bullpen. Not to mention Medlen and Marek.
I don’t think Wren is finished dealing yet, but don’t look for anybody in return to make the 25 man roster.

Acosta will make the team. Corky left the pictures he had with Manny.

the man: “WE JUST DONT HAVE ANY RELIEF PITCHING!!”
You mean except for Mike Gonazalez, Peter Moylan, Blaine Boyer, Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo (if they choose to put in in the ‘pen), and if healthy, Rafael Soriano?

Yeh, I’m a Boyer-hater usually…but he pitched really well yesterday…the 2 hits were garbage and i think there was a questionable walk as well.

Jim, yes sir… to Gwinnett he will go. Acosta has most certainly pitched himself out of a job.

Acosta is the worst of the lot in my opinion. I like Boyer, love Moylan, dying for Ohman to come back!

Adirondack,
In 1995 we didn’t have a single player with more than 27 home runs and no one with 100 RBI.
