KC, I have to take issue with some of your projections. I don’t know how Francoeur’s attainable numbers, despite how happy we all are with his performance this spring, are basically equal to McCann’s attainable numbers.
I think if those are BMac’s numbers, you need to be far more pessimistic with Frenchy. Frankly, I think McCann is capable of putting up far better numbers than you just listed. That would essentially be no real improvement over previous healthy years.
For Jeff, though, I’d say those numbers are in the upper 75% of what we can hope for.
I think the rest of your numbers are reasonable, perhaps trending on optimistic, as to what is attainable.

Am I one of the few that are not overly curious about any info from the John Smoltz corner? Dude plays somewhere else now. He was with us, but thought he would be better off with more guaranteed money and a better chance at another ring, than to stick with the fans who adored him for so long. (forgetting all the money he “earned” last year while hurt)

I’m sickened by the number of people who think we should give Smoltz a standing ovation as he takes the mound against us in a Red Sox uniform. F**K NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t want to rehash all of this, but he had a reasonable offer on the table from the Braves, and he chose to leave. He probably just wanted the best possible shot at one last WS appearance before he retires, and at that time, things weren’t looking good for the Braves. I get that. Still… he chose to walk away.
When Smoltz retires, THEN it will be time to give him a standing ovation for all he did in a Braves uniform. When he stands on the platform at Cooperstown with a Braves cap on, THEN it will be time for Braves fans to give him a standing ovation. But this year, in a Sox uni, not on your life. You should be ashamed of yourself if you give the enemy (and that’s what he’ll be when he returns this year – speaking only in baseball terms, of course).

I think we might need class on the definition of “perhaps”. Anytime you see one of those 10-paragraph overviews from KC, you can boil it down to “The Braves are better than anybody at every position, and each player will have a career year. At least.”

KC, chill man. it happened, its over. folks can cheer smoltz and still hope he gets rocked. (i do) i really miss him to be honest.
smoltz is who he is. he loves attention, loves being in the spotlight (this is one reason he is so great, by the way). he went to the sox because he wanted to, because the braves couldnt pay him what they could. its sad, but thats what happened. im thinking that im either going to be cheering, or at least giving some polite applause.

Nscoots, true. But I read the post as to what was “attainable”, not what was likely to happen. Maybe 60th percentile or something. It would be a miracle if the Braves put those numbers up. But I wouldn’t be surprised, absent Frenchy, if any one player put those numbers up.

Epinephrine, I won’t disagree that McCann’s probably capable of more. But I also think he’ll get a few more days off this year (now that Corky is no longer his back up), don’t you?
Francoeur and Schafer are the only 2 positions in the lineup where I think “optimism” came into play (though well justified, I think) at all in my guesses. Everything else is pretty well just math-based, working from their recent numbers.
But obviously, we have nothing to go on with Schafer, other than what we think he’s capable of (in practical terms) this year. I think Schafer is probably capable of numbers better than those, but we’ll know soon enough, I’m sure.
As for Francoeur, to repeat what I said in the last blog…
what I’ve seen from Francoeur this spring has made me a believer. 110%. I expected him to bounce back. I expect him to be better… but I didn’t expect him to be an entirely different hitter.
He’s looked more like Chipper this spring than the Frenchy of old. He’s shown off a GREAT eye, swinging at NOTHING out of the strikezone… driving pitches where they’re thrown, rather than trying to pull everything. 7 walks, 2 strikeouts… dude has not only turned it around, but has really matured as a hitter. Because what happened last year forced him to change, his ‘08 season might wind up being the best thing that ever happened to his career.
I actually think Franceour is VERY capable of putting up numbers better than the ones I listed for him this year. Based on what I’m seeing from him this spring, the numbers I threw out there were, IMO, relatively conservative.

I’m not saying I’ll boo but essentially,though Glavine was younger, Smoltz and he left for the same type of reason…money. The stipulations that apply to both are different, as Smoltz won’t pitch til June and our pitching didn’t take a hit…unlike Glavine supposing to be ready for the Mets opening day and hurt our rotation.
In other words if Glavine was booed, there’s no saying Smoltz won’t be booed, if he even pitches against us in June. Most likely he will cause we face the Red Sox 6 times…but he may not face us in Atlanta. Heck by the time we face him he could be still on the DL. But to say it’s positive he won’t get booed is crazy.

DAP, I’m just saying that now is not the time to cheer him. Not when he’s wearing the other team’s uniform. If a player is traded against his will… well, that might be a little different, but that’s not the case.
I think Braves fans need to wait until he’s no longer wearing the other team’s uniform to cheer for him. As I said, when he’s retired and there’s a ceremony before a home game to retire his jersey and recognize all he did a Braves jersey… THEN it will be time to cheer from him. But not now. Not when he’s out there wearing the other team’s uniform, trying to beat our team.

DOB, thanks for the new blog and the words from John Smoltz. I know lots of folks here are so bitter about his departure and his words since. But he is still one of my favorites. He was a great Brave and deserves to have a standing O when he returns to Turner Field. I thought the same about Glavine when he came back with the Mets, even though it was hard seeing him in the NY uniform. But to me, the standing ovation is a sign that we all appreciated him and what he meant to the Braves for so long. I know my stance will rile many posters here and that isn’t my intention. Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux were the main reasons why the Braves were so good for so long. I don’t have a problem giving an ovation to guys like that.

It’s strange not having him here, and I’m sure for him it’s strange being back here, and there’s a lot of thoughts and emotions that are going through his head being back here.

Glavine on their time together in their heyday with Braves: “That’s be the time that I most remember, obviously. It was fun because we were winning. And because of all the fun we had off the field. because ive been at games where people have gone crazy for former players, like julio franco or greg maddux.
so, it shouldnt be just because he is wearing another uniform.
if its because of how he left….first of all, why would it be different after he retires, and second, i think people need to just come to terms with it. i dont see it as an act of betrayal by either party. both the braves and smoltz just did what they thought was best for them.

I’m really not sure who DOB writing Glavine/Smoltz quotes appeals to other than certain fans that live in the past. I realize DOB is doing his job and writing what he’s given, but DAMN, I think most fans have had enough of this for a lifetime.
