For those interested: on Braves radio (at least on 96.1 fm), they’re filling the rain delay time by playing the “Remembering Skip” tribute… if you’re just waiting on the game on tv, might want to tune in to the radio (if you have access)….

STEVE OHIO

I saw that the average wins error for PECOTA in 2008 was 8.5 games. That’s the worst it has done since it’s inception. Wonder why? It was running about 5 the last few years.

85% for Schafer on the AJC poll. You listening Wren???

Boy, assuming Schafer wins CF, I really wish there could be a place on this team for Anderson as a 5th outfielder. He would be fantastic as a pinch-hitter to lead off an inning… and extremely valuable as a late-inning pinch runner. And of course, he can play 3 OF positions extremely well.

I no there isn’t room for Anderson if he doesn’t win CF… but personally, I certainly hope they’ll keep him at least until Glavine’s return. And even then, I think it might be worth it to at least consider giving a 6-man bullpen a shot in order to keep Anderson in the fold.

Not saying that’s necessarily the right way to go… but you could give it a try. Keep Anderson here at least until Glavine’s return. And if at that time, everyone is healthy in the ‘pen and is performing their roles capably, we might be just fine with a 6-man ‘pen (Gonzo, Soriano, Moylan, Boyer, O’Flaherty, Carlyle).

They announced 1:50 estimated start. This park seems much more fan friendly than Orlando was. Much cheaper, smaller, and food vendors everywhere. Even had a pretty good BBQ plate.

Can’t wait until or if Schafer struggles getting adjusted and some of you bandwagoners will be saying he shoulda spent time at AAA. I want him up come April 5th but he will go through his struggles sooner or later until he adjust and I’m fine with it.

“What about trading Matt Diaz?” (cjonze 11:58)

“Then Matt could be trade bait.” (N8 12:05)

Before you guys trade my man, Matt Diaz, keep in mind that he also serves as the Braves 3rd string catcher.

MBATL, thanks for the heads up on the Skip tribute. DAMN I miss listening to that guy. I mean I really, truly miss that guy. He was the best of the best. Period.

Looks like 18 WOL might be on the DL to start the season. Was tossing some wiffle balls to my kid and on the last one my 90 lb lab that was sitting beside me lunged for it and took my left knee out. Very reminiscent of ‘Sweep the leg Johnny!’ except he was right beside and had maybe 14 inches to get any momentum. Strong dog. He separated my shoulder about 6 years ago. And to top it off I fell on wet grass and got laughed at by the kid.

I agree Tom, what is this trade Matt Diaz theme? He’s a .330 hitter that has no problem doing whatever it is Bobby asks him to do. Great attitude, great person, and an old school baller! I’m tired of hearing about “Trade Matt Diaz!”

Ya, and Bobby likes to have a 3rd guy who can catch on his roster.

I think the Braves realize that Schafer is the man they want in CF. The problem is that Wren might not be willing to take a chance that Anderson will be lost through waivers and not get anything in return if he can’t work out a trade before the roster is set. If a trade doesn’t happen before then I can see Schafer sent down to AAA for a week or so until Frank believes he can safely get Josh through waivers.

Of course that would give Josh a shot at earning his keep.

For people interested in reading a pretty good writeup regarding the service time issue, here’s an entry from USSMariner a year ago about a couple of their prospects, WILYMO

thanx for the read but I think that “ethics” argument is a load of crap. Businesses all over the word handle their employees in whatever way they want to gain maximum economic benefit. With the stranglehold that the union has on the game and their general refusal to bend on anything I see nothing wrong with maximizing your investment. I would have no problem keeping Schafer down an extra week or two for just that reason, though Scoots is right it is not in line with previous Braves behavior. It might be precipitated by the economic woes, but I agree that there are other probably more important considerations.

Bought my last new car in December 2005. It was a BUICK LaCROSSE XL 4dr. sdn. What do you think? That particular year, make, and model just displaced the LEXUS as #1 in customer satisfaction. Been buying BUICKS since 1976. Great cars. I have a 1994 BUICK REGAL 4r. sports edition which I acquired used in NOVEMBER 1997. No worries. 168,000 and counting. 287,000 is the max I’ve put on one when I was working in my own business. Did a lot of over-the-road, about 40,000 a year. Great car. Have also owned 2 MAZDAs. A 1987 RX-7 turbo and a 1993 MX-6 which is still going strong with 367,000 miles on it. MAZDA was 80% FORD ownership at the time. I assume they are still great cars. Won’t mention how fast I went over the road once in that twin turbo. Check the speedometer. I came within ten MPH of maxing it.

Seriously, if Josh is lost to waivers, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen. We only traded Villareal for him and it’s not like we don’t have 2 replacements. Of course you’d rather get something rather than nothing for him, but if he didn’t clear waivers, we’d still be the same team.

We won’t net any wins from using Gregor Blanco over Jordan Schafer for 12 days. 2 months, probably. 12 days, no. 12 days is all it takes to get a whole additional year of service. it’d be stupid to call him up before April 17th.

Seems like there are 2 competing but popular thoughts about Josh: One is that we’re not likely to get anything significant in trade for him; and the other that we can’t afford to lose him for nothing.

Seems like unless we just keep him permanently, we’ll get either nothing or just slightly more than nothing. Seems like much ado about… well, you know.

DOB how surprised are you that JJ is getting the nod over Vasquez as the #2 starter. Or does it really matter that much in the grand scheme of things?

PWHjort

March 29th, 2009

That should’ve read “Jordan Schafer over Gregor Blanco”, not vice versa. TexasBrave, it’s all about timing. Vazquez is the #2 starter, but he’s unavailable for the 2nd game of the season due to his pre-season start schedule. Not like it matters though, rotations get so jumbled up it doesn’t really matter who you call what number. They usually all throw their max number of innings, regardless of what number they’re called.

Ben If Wren is listening, and makes a decision based on an AJC poll……he needs to be fired. Sure, all us fans have our opinions and will second guess most any decisions made that don’t work out….but don’t kid yourself, our opinions don’t count for crap when it comes to the front office making decisions on the roster (and they shouldn’t count for crap since we are all on the outside looking in and don’t really know what goes on on the inside).

I won’t be happy if Shaefer isn’t the starting center fielder opening day, but I’ll get over it. Just like I’m gonna get over Hanson not being on the opening day roster, since I realize I’m just a fan and have no involvement in the running of a MLB team.

Chop Chick had a poll up about what round you’d take Tommy Hanson in a fantasy draft. I’m serious. And she seriously considered taking him in one of the top 5 rounds. The poll options were a) 1-5, b) 6-10, c) 11-15, d) 16-20, e) 21+. Well, chop chick, considering he’s starting the year at AAA and he’s unproven at the major league level, I’ll go with option f): don’t draft him.

Sure, I like Matt Diaz, everyone does. What’s not to like? He’s a nice guy. But the only thing he has proven is that he is not capable of playing every day, as Bobby gave him the chance last year. Just a platoon guy, no real speed, not a defensive gem… but a nice guy, yes. Just hate to see the team TRY to get Anderson through waivers when he could upgrade the defense and speed. Who on this roster would you bring in late to pinch run to manufacture a run? We don’t have that guy, IMHO.

MBATL & KC and all others that loved Skip (everybody?)

During the rain delay, how about a Skip-ism or two?

Years ago, while talking about Mike Schmidt, Skip left out a very important consonant in pronouncing Mike’s last name. Skip said that when you make a mistake like that, you either correct your mistake, or keep talking and hope the listening audience will think they misheard. Skip chose the latter. After talking about Mike for several minutes, and thinking he had “buried” the mistake, Skip finally stopped. His partner at the time, Ernie Johnson, paused, then turned to Skip and asked, “what did you say that player’s name was?”

I think they were playing a day game on the West coast. The bottom of the inning was just coming back from a commercial break. A TBS cameraman was following a well-endowed, scantily-clad young lady as she returned to her seat. As she bent over to put down her beverage, Skip said, “as we start the bottom of the 4th, I see there are almost two out”.

We all miss you, Skip.
