TTNM, not trying to defend myself ’cause I don’t think it’s important, but I shoulda’ said a couple too many ’cause I only had two, but I’m scheduled for a root canal next week and had some pain meds too so that’s all it took. I used to be a fan of the single malt but mostly quit a year ago. Was at a wedding yesterday evening and just went with the flow.

Hey Teetotaler,

Do you monitor the blogs, looking to condemn other bloggers for what you have determined sinful? Keep it to yourself. I doubt you are in a position to throw that “first stone.” Keep it about baseball and stop judging others!

DAVID O’BRIEN:

Went to the GWINNETT site and saw where the dimensions of the field match those of TURNER. Thats smart planning. Don’t know if my suggestion was taken to heart or whether the BRAVES had that in the plans from the beginning, but thanks for the acknowledgement here on your blog. Hope the dimensions help ATLANTA get a better line on their prospects. GO BRAVES.

DOB, good article on the CF situation yesterday. I hope Wren’s able to figure this thing out better than I can. Everybody can see Schaefer deserves the chance to start, but that doesn’t mean the other two are roadkill. Blanco and Anderson have shown they can play at this level, though maybe not as high a level as Jordan. For me it isn’t about the arb thing, it’s about losing Anderson and getting nothing or next to nothing in return. I’m guessing the Braves FO is anguishing over it and hopefully will come up with the best case. Too much talent at one position isn’t a bad problem to have, but it is a problem.

For people interested in reading a pretty good writeup regarding the service time issue, here’s an entry from USSMariner a year ago about a couple of their prospects, Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien. The timing is a little different from Schafer since those two had been called up in September of the previous year, but nonetheless it discusses the interesting ethics issue behind it as well as some good tidbits on how service time actually works (for those interested). TTNMan,
Religious or not, keep it to yourself. Wrong place for that!

For what my opinion is worth, I say Schafer to Gwinnett. Carry Anderson as your starter, and display him for a week maybe increasing his trade value. If Schafer is ready, let’s get something for Anderson. As for Blanco, I’m not sure if he’s any more than an advanced utility player. I like him, but I don’t see him grinding through 150-160 games.
But no one ever listens to me anyway!

Is anyone watching MLB network? Yesterday I happened to catch an hour-long recap of the ‘95 season. From returning after the strike of ‘94 to Atlanta’s pitching domination of Cleveland in the Series. It wasn’t bad which is what I expected. Also watched “30 Clubs in 30 Days”, Braves spring training.
Just wondering if anyone else is tuning in.

It’s official: Derek Lowe to start both the April 5 season opener at Philly and the home opener April 10. Jurrjens, not Vazquez, is scheduled to start Game 2. Vazquez gets game 3 at Philly on April 8, off day April 9, then Lowe gets the home opener and Kawakami makes his debut April 11 in the second home game, vs. Washington.

Oh, and Garret Anderson is scheduled to DH today and tomorrow. It’s rained this morning but supposed to clear up. Bus was moved back an hour, so we got Bobby at Dark Star before they headed over to Lakeland.

I went to exchange tickets yesterday at the Ted and wound up taking the tour of the stadium. In the big open thing behind home plate, I noticed that Bowman had a reserved spot with a name plate. Personally, I would lobby for a MIB/DOB blog name plate with the Braves. If there is one that says The Dean, really, then the MIB/DOB should be represented too.

Ted Keith with SI has this take on the Reds staff and I can’t say I disagree with him. Cincinnati looks to ride promising young rotation to relevancy

“While Volquez, Harang, Arroyo and Cueto are locked into the rotation, the fifth spot remains up for grabs between Owings, a 26-year-old obtained from the Diamondbacks last August in the Adam Dunn deal who might be a better hitter than he is a pitcher, and Bailey, who has long been considered the top pitching prospect in the organization but went 0-6 in 2008. The likely leader this spring in Owings, who has yet to pitch for the Reds but whose surprisingly powerful bat earned him four ABs last season after the trade.”

Easy like – I think MLBN is doing some good stuff. I’m watching their 30 Teams deal on the Rays right now. Baseball Prospectus predicting 93 wins and 3rd place in the division for the Rays. What a monster that AL East is. I’d hate to be running the O’s or Jays with zero chance for success for a long time. I really think the Yanks will find a way to screw it up, but they’re absolutely loaded for bear.

Yesterday on XM Home Plate there was an interview with Wayne Krivsky (I believe), the ex Cincinnati Reds GM. He had an interesting response to this whole Spring Training performance situation.

He said that you didn’t worry or start freaking out when an established player only hits .085 in ST-that they would come along and still hit close to their usual numbers when the season started. Conversely, he said that you didn’t change your plans because a rookie was hitting .400, either-you went along with what your original intentions were before ST.

Y’all-Jordan Schafer has had an excellent ST. No one will dispute this. The kid has impressed all of us with his hitting, his speed and his defense (he impressed me last Spring, too). He has shined considerable bright light on the Braves’ future (along with Hanson, Heyward and Freeman-now do y’all see why Wren refused to traded them for Peavy?). However, he has not had any At Bats above AA ball and won’t hit .385 during the regular season , be it in Atlanta or at AAA.. You lose very little in the way of guaranteed performance by letting him go to Gwinnett for a few weeks or a month. Let him progress naturally.

Yes, yes yes, we all realize Josh Anderson has less upside than Schafer. We all realize that he is constantly reviled for lack of OBP and his tendency to strike out way too much. However, when called to the majors the past couple of years, he has put up some decent numbers, batting .315 with a (better than given credit for) OBP of .361. He is good defensively, can steal bases and has even hit for a touch of power. He has earned a chance-at least for a couple months. The fact that most here have developed an intense love affair with the rookie doesn’t negate this. Even though he hasn’t put up Schafer’s numbers this Spring, he’s still hit almost .300 and has only one extra base hit less than JS has and has a SLG % of .500-not all that bad.

I’m fine with whatever way the decision goes (though I’d hate to just see Josh leave with zero return), but if Anderson is not successful (and I imagine not successful quickly), Schafer will be called up. In the meantime, let him enjoy the new stadium over in Gwinnett. It can’t hurt. He has a Hummer-he can get to Turner Field.

I consider Consumers Report to be my bible when I’m buying a car or any other major purchase, and they are more and more giving a little love to some of the American cars. I’ve always believed the closer to home you spend your money the more of it will come back to you, but I’ve had too many bad American cars and too many good Japanese ones to give up now. We drive ours ’till the wheels come off and aren’t in the market now but I think it’s smart to consider USA made.

Lew.

Nice post. I want them to go with Schafer, because I’m cursious to see what he can do. And since it’s assumed that he’ll be up at some point this season, it’s not like we’re wasting an “option”.

That being said, you’re probably correct. Nothing wrong with letting Anderson show what he can do, while Schafer gets a few AAA AB’s.

Did you ever get all those files to play/organized on that cd?

My wife and kids just got me an Ipod Touch (32 gig) for my B-day, and I’ve basically spent the last 4 days transferring all of my music on my computer, along with all of my cd’s I own to it. Long and tedious work, to say the least, (had to rename a TON of files on my computer to get thme to sync with eachother properly). But in the end it’s gonna be worth it.

Hard to believe, one could have his entire music collection in his pocket at all times. Technology is frickin’ crazy.

My wife has one of those Amazon Kindles. It’s insane to think that years ago, a husband and wife would have had a room (or two) set aside for all of their books and albums/cd’s/cassettes/8-tracks and now you conceivably keep the whole damn collection in in the palm of your hands.

Lew,

I’m guilty of having a bit of a prospect crush on Schafer. But why the crush on Josh Anderson? What’s so special about him? And who says the Braves will simply have to give him away? If he has such significant value that the club would be making a huge mistake by not keeping him on the 25-man, then some other team could use him, too. If he’s so good, the Braves will get something for him in return, even if it’s a prospect who won’t sniff the major leagues for a year or two.

When the Braves had to dump Kevin Millwood because of the Maddux contract, that was a true loss (at the time, anyway). The Phillies did the Braves a favor by offering Estrada in return.

Josh Anderson is not on that level and is imminently replaceable.

DOB, interesting insight on the Schafer thing. I’ll assume that if they go with Schafer, the WON’T be keeping Anderson as the 4th OF?

Or would they do that? Since Blanco and B. Jones have options. Any idea (or guesses) on possible suitors for Josh in the way of a trade?

I can’t imagine (unless the Braves “show” that they’re intending on keeping him as the 4th OF), that teams are gonna give up too much for Josh, knowing that he’s out of options.

Strange to have all this “depth” in OF and the rotation. To have two guys like Jo-Jo and Hanson going to AAA is crazy. Could have used that depth last year, huh?

Is Bobby/Wrenn REALLY “OK” with those two lefties in the pen to start the year? I’m not sure I am.

Listened to it again yesterday, and laughed just as hard as I did the first time. So I found a photo of him that looks like he’s yelling, and saved it as the album artwork for the file, and put the damn clip on the ipod.

brekky, my wife had a Subaru before we bought the Honda she has now and it was probably the best car we’ve owned, but there are no dealers anywhere close to us and though we don’t need a dealer often, sometimes you do so we decided to change brands. I wanted an MGB since I was a teenager but was never the kind of guy to tinker, and with British cars you better tinker or you’ll have a heap in short order so I didn’t buy one. When gas prices went crazy a couple years back and I needed something to replace my 10 year old Dodge p/u that gets 14 MPH, I bought the Honda 2 seater which gets about 28 and kept the truck because, well, a man in GA needs a p/u. The Honda is a tight fit for a grown man (I know, that’s what she said) but really fun to drive and reliable. Consumer Reports has never had anything but bad stuff to say about Jeeps but I’ll take a look at latest ratings. If it isn’t in the premium content I’ll post a link. I pay for the premium service but wouldn’t be able to send you the link, I don’t think. You can get a lot of free content at consumerreports.org and if they say it, I believe it. However, all spring long I keep hearing that ST stats are meaningless, yet people still count on them to tell them Schafer will be Joe Stud. All I’m pointing out is that there is a different direction (which is just as logical) they can go and they may do so. You’redealing with a. A prson who HAS a ML track record (yes, it’s small) that has been good and another player who’s never faced ML pitching at all during the regular season. Hey all,

I haven’t blogged in ages. Hope everyone here is well. I’m pretty excited for the upcoming season. I agree with Lew’s 11:03 AM. I don’t think it’s the end of the world if the Braves start the year with Schafer playing CF for Gwinnett. The arbitration clock is a big deal for most teams, but I haven’t really seen the Braves operate that way, so my guess is that they’ll use the player that they think can give them the best chance to win. Two school’s of thought on this. 1. Schafer seems ready, so why waste him in Gwinnett for two months. He seems to be the Braves best option in CF. 2. He has never had a Triple-A plate appearence, so what is the rush? Why not gain back those two months of development that he lost last year?

Either way, I have no problem with whatever decision the Braves make. People shouldn’t be too worried about Schafer’s impending free agency after 2014 if he starts the year in ATL. I mean, come on. Haha. Who knows who is going to be on this team at that time or over the course of a couple years? It’s more the arbiration numbers, but the Braves have never concerned themselves with that.

As far as the Braves season goes, the starting pitching is going to be very good. The offense should be good enough. I am a little worried about the bullpen, but you just never know. They certainly have the talent.

Should be a great season. And it should only get better from here on out. As everyone knows, their system is strong.

Runnin – now I’m no chemist so I can’t explain all the specifics (or any of the specifics) but anxiety disorders, depression, etc. is caused by some sort of chemical/hormonal imbalance, and I guess they detected that through his blood?

Lew, that’s right. You told me that once before, that you could play them, just didn’t know what it all was. I already deleted the folder that I had everything in it that I put on the cd I sent you. Otherwise I’d type up a list of what’s on it and email you that.

If you’d like, you could send it back to me and I’ll do just that. Unless it doesn’t bother you that much. It would bug me. LOL!

DOB, thanks for the response. Woogidy scolded (just kidding), me for forgetting about Diaz, too. But thanks for answering the question.

Not to put you in a situation of going on the record, but if you were a Braves fan, and as a guy down there watching those guys pitch, would YOU be OK with either of those lefties being the only lefties in the pen?

Either way, thanks for the insight on that as well.

Dish Network sucks. Doesn’t carry the MLB Network. I’m a Spurs fan living in ATL, and have the NBA League Pass package, which is only available through DISH. If it weren’t for that, I’d probably switch to Direct TV.

DOB — Light hitting speedy OF’ers are a dime a dozen. And teams know that he’s out of options and will most likely have to be put on waivers. So what do the Braves realistically think they can get for J. Anderson? Would he more than likely have to be packaged with someone (perhaps one of the extra arms we have?)

dogsbrekky, all the reviews are in their premium content but if you’ll shoot me an e-mail (2neal@bellsouth.net) I’ll cut and paste some stuff. Basically the Fords were the only American SUV’s they liked at all (what I assume you’re shopping since you asked about the Edge) but they don’t like them much. Their most highly rated was the new Taurus-X which starts around $28K, but I’m guessing in today’s climate you should do much better than that. It rated a 75 on their overall scale which isn’t bad, but gets only 16MPG.

Maybe we can get a bag of baseballs, 4 dollars, 2 cups of coffee, a happy meal, a washing machine, 2 novelty beer bottle openers, and Adam Eaton for him. Actually, they can just keep Adam Eaton.

Looks like Vaz has a pretty tough Tigers lineup to go against today:

1. Granderson CF
2. Polanco 2B
3. Ordonez RF
4. Cabrera 1B
5. Guillen LF
6. Thames DH
7. Inge 3B
8. Treanor C
9. Santiago SS

“Another thing: I think Josh Anderson will clear waivers. One of the only teams who would have a real interest in him would be the White Sox, and the options they have are probably better than Josh” – Jackie Treehorn

He might clear waivers but I doubt it. Do you know who the Sox are looking at? Ozzie seems to think they’ll start the season with Dewayne f’n Wise with the CAREER .254 OBP. They think he’s the best of the 3 guys they’re auditioning and that’s for CF and leadoff. Granted, Ozzie isn’t a genius, but he has to know that is a problem.

Don’t tell me they’re going to have to bail it out.

My $.02 on center-field…
After watching Anderson play CF vs. Washington and hearing the play-by-play on JS over the last few days, I think JS gets the center field job and bats 8th.

Anderson’s defense was very poor, especially throws, vs Washington. I think it may have cost at least one run. JS defense seems to be much, much better. Minors versus Majors, defense cannot be much different.

It does seem that the Braves are giving each CF candidate a full game (JA, JS, GB, JA, JS, GB) to finish out the decision. I think that, if Anderson has a poor defensive day today, he will be out of the running for CF.

I wonder if G. Anderson isn’t ready for opening day along with Glavine, if the Braves don’t carry J. Anderson as the fifth out-fielder to give a chance for a trade or as insurance against JS having a meltdown, while putting GA on the DL.
