1. KJ leading off day, 2B
2. Escobar, SS
3. Chipper, 3B
4. McCann, C
5. Francoeur, RF
6. Norton, 1B (Kotchman scratched, still recovering from flu)
7. B. Jones, LF
8. Schafer, CF
9. Lowe, RH
Read into it what you will, but Kelly hitting leadoff, Schafer in center again, J. Anderson not in lineup … I think it at least underscores that the Braves haven’t made up their minds about CF.
DOB, the fact that Hanson got sent down and Schafer didn’t is also very telling of the fact that the Braves are yet to make up their mind about the CF situation, I believe.
I think the Braves are being smart…why rush a guy along when our staff is pretty awesome as it right now…really Hanson becomes insurance to if anyone starts to suffer we have a dominant guy we can rely on! Has anyone thought about what we do next year when Hudson comes back?
MinnesotaJacket, those things usually work themselves out. I.E. injuries or someone becomes ineffective. If not, you just take the worst starter and put them in AAA or the bullpen.
PWHjort, no one really expected Schafer to get sent down, probably not until last cut if at all. Hanson had to go down to get innings, to make regular starts now that all the pitchers are in camp and going deeper in games, etc. Schafer is competing for a job and playing on a regular basis.
true cabravesfan, but, you never want to make the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd….so McCann must have been flying. He surprised us on the base paths last year. With the weight loss….look out!
Does anyone else find the in-game interview as annoying as I do? The game last night was almost painful to watch even before the Nats took the lead. I know its spring training, but don’t these networks realize the only people that watch a ST ghame are those with more than a casual interest in the sport? A full 1/2 inning of ABs can go by without even a mention of wh is hitting. I hate the ESPN interview with the manager during the regular season as well.
PWH I know what ya mean but how do you drop Vas, Kenshin, or Hanson into triple A again…barring injury we have 3 great quality starters who all will “probably” deserve to play on a regular basis next year.
If Jeff has a good year, as crazy as it sounds, maybe some credit needs to be given to Wren for getting contract issues over quickly with Franc. It’s one less thing on his mind so he can just focus on hitting. A mental thing, i guess.
That’s cool. I’m really hoping to see a Hanson vs. Price duel at some point during the AAA season. Anyone know if Hanson is the starting pitcher for the Gwinnett Braves’ opening day vs. the Tides?
At this point I’m not even sure it’s a “competition”. It’s not who is better. It is turning into a question of whether the Braves can even afford to have Josh Anderson playing on an every day basis.
The difference between Schafer and Hanson also showed in their play i felt. Hanson knew that he might not be on the 25 man and hence didnt overdo anything. Schafer on the other hand clearly recognizes his opportunity and is pushing hard. Nice to see his energy, just hope he retains the spark when he makes it up. The lineup is very interesting, though I thought Bobby would lead-of with Esco because they were facing a leftie.
Hanson threw 29 innings in the AFL…so that’s 167 total for the year. Putting him in the ATL rotation from day one may give him an opportunity to eclipse 200 innings, which is too much based on what he pitched last season. Keeping him down in AAA for a month or so will (in all likelihood) allow the Braves to keep him around 180 or so innings for the season, which is just about a perfect range at this stage in his career.
MinnesotaJacket, our 2010 rotation options include, Hudson, Kawakami, Jurrjens, Vazquez, Hanson, and Jurrjens. The odds of one of them not being hurt is very small. If they are all healthy one goes to the bullpen or to AAA.
How did he resolve contract issues early? They almost went to arb. and settled near the midpoint about a day before the scheduled arb. Are you suggesting that if they had gone to arb Frenchie would’ve had a bad spring? I dont think so.
MFin04He blew 5 games. Or caused 5 losses….stop playing technical terms of baseball.
what if we are just accurate instead? in one of his blown saves, he also got the loss, so that not two seperate games, thats one. in his other blown save, the braves actually won the game, so he didnt cause a loss that time. the other two losses were when he came into the game with it tied… and the team lost.
so really, he “caused” 3 losses in 36 appearances. he really pitched pretty well despite coming off of surgery.
Don’t forget to throw Joe Joe in there…yes I know he has had a rough career so far but if he keeps up the stuff he has shown in spring then I like him as a future #3-4 starter for the Braves. Then you throw in Morten if he keeps up a good work then he could be a starter as well in our future. So IF everyone stays healthy wwould the Braves trade one or keep tehm in the system and try to wait till contracts expire…
Thomas, that many channels? I hope I get all of ‘em. I’m not sure why, but Turner South doesn’t come in right now. It did that last year and then just like majic, appeared when the season started. TBS was so much simpler and had better announcers. Skip was halarious, while Pete was more of the geek. It worked perfectly..
Regarding your 1:30, I’d like to see Medlen in the rotation, or at least compete for it next year too. Don’t forget he’s almost ready as well. That would be 7 guys, and wouldn’t even include Morton or Reyes, or Parr. All 3 likely won’t get traded.
Okga….The G braves open the season away with 4 games again the Knights, then 4 again the Bulls, If Hanson open the Season again the Knights the his Schedule should be on April 19 sun day agains the Tides.
Boy, I sure didn’t like having Esco bunt with KJ at 2b and 0 out! I’m gonna assume Bobby wanted to take the opportunity to let Yunel practice the skill, which is a good spring training thing to do …. but I hope we’re not gonna play for 1 run in the 1st during the regular season!
This is my point…why not if your the Braves trade Vas or Kenshin next year (if another young gun steps up this year and we fill he could work the needs) and thus be able to get some great compensation for teams that NEED pitching..
Why would BC cut Reyes given the uncertainty surrounding Glavine? Wouldn’t it have been a good idea to keep Reyes as insurance and in doing so save one of his options?
Cativo, yeah but that’s probably better for his mind than if it weren’t resolved by now, don’t you think? I mean if you don’t know that Franc. is a guy that needs his mind cleared to perform at his highest, than you and I have been watching different Braves games over the years.
Knuckle Sandwich regarding last night’s telecast (from the last blog)…Dibble praised Francour at length about his new approach this spring and how he expects Frenchy to have a much better season than last year, plus he made several other comments complimentary to the Braves. I have always liked Dibble on XM and found him to be funny and insightful. I did not care for Carpenter at all and, yes, they are homers in building up their team for the new year, but I imagine that is the case with most teams’ broadcasters.
The only complaint I have about last night was how much they talked about the Nat’s depth at every position and how talented they are; it seems to me they are loaded with has-beens, rejects, and suspects and I don’t expect them to be very good this year, but, then again, they did kick our butts last year!
So how can I get in touch with you to validate my credibility with the bloggers? I don’t wanna stalk you or anything and usually when I see you, you’re in the press box and there’s a fairly tall wall that prevents me from just coming right up to you. Not only that but you’re usually busy typing away and I don’t wanna interrupt your mojo.
man…I have been fighting it all spring. I’ve been trying to keep the “business of baseball” perspective this spring, but I’m just about ready to throw my hat into the schafer corner. It just seems that his maturity from the “first person” days, the new speed, hitting and nice defense has the kid screaming “I’m ready”. it would suck to lose j anderson if put on waivers, but one slow month from our CF has the potential to hurt us if he is placed at the top of the lineup.

Rafael Soriano, does get injured an awful lot, and he is totally dominant at times, and struggles when his velocity dips. Could it be steroids? He is from the Dominican Republic, the steroid capital of the world.
For next year (Im going to assume Glavine goes out on a high note and retires a Brave) that Lowe stays at one with Hudson and Hanson 2-3 Jurj as number 4 guy (we trade Vaz or kenshin whoever had the worse season for great prospects) and then dependin on how the young guys give them one more year in the minors with our 2011 team looking like Hanson-Jurj-Lowe-JoJo-and either Morten,Parr, or the other new guy (can’t remember his name)
mike28212 – A bonus for me having Hanson sent down is that I’ll be able to see him pitch when Gwinnett opens up here against the Charlotte Knights.
I also live in Charlotte & hope to go see the opener to see Hanson pitch. But the game starts at 11:15AM on a Thursday. What team opens their season on a morning weekday?
This team might struggle against Aces due to the lack of the long ball, but they are going to absolutely eat up middle of the road to mediocre pitching.
I get what you ae saying about Frenchie. All I am saying is – if the contract hadnt been resolved on the day it was, it would’ve been resolved the next day (the scheduled arb date). It wasnt due to Wren that anything happened. It just would never drag on far into spring for the arb cases, which is why it is scheduled for feb.
I think Reyes’s development has been an overlooked story of spring. Hanson has kind of overshadowed him. I still think Reyes is going to have a chance to be a very good pitcher. Vasquez’s contract is only for two years so the braves will have flexiblity with the staff for the next two years. I could definately see Reyes join Jurrgens and Hanson in the Rotation with Kawakami and Lowe in 2011. That is 3 pretty decent pitchers at pretty decent cost. That ought to help payroll and free up money for a bat or 2 to go along with Heyward and/or Freeman when they get here.
Why is Heyward still here for today’s game. It’s interesting for the fans to see the top prospect, but there are still 6 outfielder’s + GA who are competing for roster spots or playing time to tune up for the season. Thgey need to get all the ABs possible. It seems like Blanco has already been demoted/traded in the minds of the brass.

DOB do you think we will see a six-man pitching rotation in MLB? Would the Braves benefit from one this year?

What is the latest LF talk? We have Jones in today, Diaz playing great, GAnderson is coming back? Seems more of a question lately than CF.

I wanted to add a point about Hanson and Reyes.
