Buddy from my work went and caught some spring training last week. Came in today with two personalized autographed balls for me: Tommy Hanson and Jordan Schafer. Sweet.

Good news today folks, Livan Hernandez was named the Mets 5th starter. He’s a career 3-15 against the Braves with a 5.52 ERA and has given up a whopping 24 HR in 151.2 innings pitched while striking out 96 and walking 68. All of this in 24 career starts against Atlanta. If you break it down in the last 3 years, It gets even worse, The numbers are 1-1, 10.05, 4K, 10BB, 3HR .393 BAA. How in the world did he win one of those games?

Threw 75 pitches, including first-pitch strikes to 15 of 21 batters. “He was literally unhittable, facing those guys,” Bobby Cox said.*
Looks like Kawakami may soon become an expensive middle reliever.

DOB – PLEASE EXPLAIN
In a WBC writeup on last nights game, said that Suzuki fouled off a pitch after it bounced in the dirt. Is that legal? And if so, then it must be where the ball is when it crosses the plate? If that’s correct (and doesn’t seem like it could be) why don’t pitchers ever pitch cricket style? I understand they are able to get wicked bounces off the ground – always assumed that wasn’t legit, but not sure how Suzuki fouled one off after it hit the ground then.
Any thoughts/explanation? Thanks!!!!

Kenny personally think Kawakami will win 10+ games and thats not bad from your fourth starter. Kawakami has won the Japanese Cy Young ( you know the guys that have won both WBC kicking our butts in the process ) Hanson hasnt done anything (yet).

DOB – Had a vision of you Saturday night. In your hotel, a smoke filled room, cigar smoke of course. Relaxed, lying on your couch waiting for your Jayhawks to play on Sunday. Music on your sound system blaring. Strawberry Alarm Clock singing “Incense, Peppermints” and the Lemon Pipers following up with “Green Tambourine”. Wow! Now that is some serious classic rock! I know you like more contemporary stuff, but that was my vision. Was my vision on the money?
Who came up with that “Rock, Chalk Jayhawk” cheer? Because that is seriously retarded. Something no one understands, even Kansas fans don’t understand it. They are lemmings, spouting out that disturbed cheer to piss other fans off. Now my Clemson Tiger fans have a cheer that a man can be proud of. 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, C-l-e-m-s-o-n, T-i-g-e-r-s. Woogidy and Fanin, I hear you, but I’m interested in what the rule actually is. I mean, does the rule say “it’s where the ball is when it crosses the plate” and if so, then why couldn’t you bounce it up there?
Doesn’t make sense that the rule says, where the ball is, but it’s a dead ball once it hits the ground, unless the batter swings in which case it’s still a live ball (because if it wasn’t still a live ball, then you couldn’t foul it off).
Just wondering if DOB maybe new the exact rule.

Tonight Olendorf is picthing well and Francouer is overmatched, he was overmatched against Johan on the weekend etc etc.

Schafer, wtf are you talking about? Francoeur had a fantastic AB where he drew the walk off Santana and didn’t look even remotely overmatched. Tonight, he has a broken bat fly out and sharply hit ball to the right side, hardly “overmatched”. You clearly haven’t been watching, so spare us.

If anyone cares, here’s the official MLB rule regarding pitches in the dirt:
A BALL is a pitch which does not enter the strike zone in flight and is not struck at
by the batter.
Rule 2.00 (Ball) Comment: If the pitch touches the ground and bounces through the strike zone it
is a “ball.” If such a pitch touches the batter, he shall be awarded first base. If the batter swings at such a
pitch after two strikes, the ball cannot be caught, for the purposes of Rule 6.05 (c) and 6.09 (b). If the
batter hits such a pitch, the ensuing action shall be the same as if he hit the ball in flight.

First of all, one of his two outs today was a hard hit liner. And the Braves have only faced a few good starting pitchers over the past 2 weeks. Francoeur got hits off two of them, Josh Johnson and Adam Wainwright, and drew a (9 pitch, I think it was) walk off of Santana, at no point looking overmatched.
