And I know I am in the minority here but I think its a mistake that he’s being pushed to the side so easily. DAN IN NC

Today’s Lineup:

3B Chipper Jones

“wide open” I jump to a conclusion the decision is as simple as “who is the best now” Bobby’s Belly

jumping to conclusions, that’s like assuming ain’t it? and you know what they say about assumptions. ;)
Nothing in baseball is ever as simple as to depend only on 35 or so St at bats.

DOB: I think Anderson will ultimately end up the choice for Centerfield…and bat leadoff.
Shafer has options…… and Anderson doesn’t. They are nip and tuck in abilities, althought Shafer hits for more power i think. I don’t think it will be long into the season that Shafer gets a shot tho… depending on injuries, performance, etc.

Ncscoots in regards to your 12:21 post I understand why Wren did it. If he did nothing and the outfield failed he would never hear the end of it. However, I dont consider Anderson a “big bat.” He is solid but we had so much potential from our young guys that I was pretty certain they could be solid.

Nor do I, my friend. And I tend to agree that he is an incremental upgrade over the pre-trade roster. That being said, being “pretty certain” about the alternatives wouldn’t have fed Frank Wren’s bulldog, I’m thinking.

Hey Anders if you’re around, I remember last week when you were bragging on your boy Pelfrey and you posted a very nice stat line that he had. Maybe you didn’t see that he pitched today but the results were not as pleasant. Were you not going to post today’s line? I’ll do it for you. 4.2 IP 10 hits 6R 6 ER 1BB 1K. I feel great about the potential for the Braves this season no matter how centerfield is resolved. The key for a good year will be to dodge the injury bug that plagued us last year and career year from Frenchy and McCann.Kotchman will also step up too. With the added depth less strain on our relievers keeping them fresh.PLEASE NO MAJOR INJURIES!

Yeah, I agree: an update would be nice–like, just a little tiny note in ChopTalk or something.

(Hey, speaking of ChopTalk, been meaning to say this for a month or so now, but there was a little thing in the March issue about McCann. He was the inaugural inductee to the Rome Braves HOF. They also retired his number 17–pretty sweet!)

As for the picture, they could have at least done this one.

“You’re right — Jamey’s got a voice that reminds me of some of the old-school country giants. I love his current CD, which someone on the blog pointed out was actually his second. So the other day I ordered his first one. Haven’t heard that yet.”

Have you ever considered a subscription service, such as rhapsody? I pay $10/month and can listen to virtually any song/album/playlist I want. It’s great for scouting out what cds you want to buy or you can download them if you are in to the whole digital thing. I only ask because I recently stumbled across Jamey Johnson and rhapsody has both of his released albums plus an exclusive live & unplugged album that is awesome. It might be worth a look for a guy that buys as many cds as you do.

http://www.insidethemajors.com/?p=141 Great article on Travis Snyder, who is in the same boat as Jordan.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that he deserves to start the year in the minors – as a fan of his, both on and off the field, it pains me to even type those words — but this is in the best interest of the Blue Jays franchise. Before you go pointing to the economy, think again, sending him to Las Vegas to begin the 2009 season isn’t an economic decision, this is about controlling this talent for as long as possible.

My argument:

A MLB player becomes eligible for free agency once he has amassed six full seasons of service time. If Snider breaks camp with the Blue Jays, he is on schedule to become a free agent after the 2014 season. If optioned until May 15, he wouldn’t have the ability to become a free agent until after the 2015 season. Isn’t six weeks of not having Snider in 2009 worth having him for six months in 2015? After all, Paul Beeston has said the 2009 season is one in which they may take a step back – I’m sure they expect to be going forward in 2015.

Need to know:

* Major League season is 183 days long
* A players needs to amass 172 active days to receive a full year of service

Snider amassed 32 service days during his call-up last year. in order to keep him from acquiring a full year of service he must end the season with 171 days of service or less. Therefore he must only spend 139 days in the majors this year, counting backwards from the end of the season – puts his recall day at May 15.

Schafer has amassed 0 service time. So all we have to do is park him in Gwinnett for 12 days and we get a whole year out of him. We play 9 games in the first 12 days of the season. Do we want 9 games this year or 162 in 2015?

dogsbrekky

March 24th, 2009
6:36 pm

I may be dead by 2015….. just play the kid if he is best

The differential on $ for the extra year would be the equivalent of signing Derek Lowe to a $57M deal instead of a $60M deal

the cry of mediocrity should cease

Schafer is the best person for CF as shown this ST under competition

PWHjort

6 weeks of service isn’t enough to delay his free agency a year, just make sure he doesn’t get super 2 status. He’ll still be a free agent after 2014, but he’ll only have 3 arb years (2012, 2013, 2014) instead of 4 (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014), meaning it will save the club money.

Shawn G

March 24th, 2009

It’s not the money..it’s the control. He will be a free agent a year earlier if we don’t wait two weeks.
