Carroll, great win last night for Duke. The Blue Devils were able to contain Damian James and the Longhorn Bigmen. Tough challenge ahead in Villanova should be a good one.

According to my source, a MINNESOTA scout told him that JOHAN had long-term damage that would begin to show up in about two seasons. The nature of the injury was not revealed, but evidently would need major corrective surgery. Than’s all I know. Now you know what all the regulars have heard from me since I stopped screaming for the BRAVES to sign him in October-November 2008. I guess we’ll see if my contact was correct before the end of this season. Good luck with that.
Is that anything like predicting having a new left fielder, an Allstar shortstop to play second, a couple flame throwing starting pitchers? If so, then Santana’a elbow should be fine. I guess JJ’s confidence should be high, he doesn’t have to face Delgado or Beltran.

Brandon, thanks. texas really revealed our weakness – in the middle. After the big fella fouled out, there was so much space in there and they spread us out and drove, it was pretty….but i have to say all the long faces I saw on the Texas bench before the game was over would have bothered me if i were a Horn. Guys were pulling jerseys up over their faces before the game was over, you know? Maybe that was just me.
Jurrjens gets through the first, perfect. I’m down in the press room, doing as the romans do in rome, since the press box here is so high and not a great view, or easy access to clubhouses, etc, but i feel a little dettached. weird.
Game is on the radio. Jim Powell is here and working hard.

If Francoer is sacrificing balance at the plate for power like Chumper did last year to win the batting title (that and sitting out many games), then expect what you are seeing in spring to be there in the season. Not really looking to mash it, I just want to put in in play.

Carroll, the jersey over the thing kind of reminded me of Adam Morrison crying in the middle of the floor against UCLA a couple years back. But you got give em credit they played a heck of a ball game.
If Brian Zoubek can give them quality minutes as he did last night, i think Duke can make some noise. Nova is similar to Duke i.e. spread the floor, attack, and shoot the 3. But they are a little more physical.
Nice start for JJ. Francouer is up in this inning, be nice to see him get a hit of Santana build his confidence a little bit.

Watching on TV, Francouer looks great. Very short swing and a walk vs the Johann Monster, while fouling off good pitches. Very impressive…that would’ve been a three pitch strikeout last year. And good to hear the Mets announcers praising him. They are a class act

Yet another outstanding at-bat by Jeff Francoeur. Very impressive the way he worked the count and fouled off pitches on Santana, and drew the walk. This is a different guy at the plate. No doubt about it. Francoeur is definitely poised for a nice season.

Nice at-bat by Prado too, just drew a walk……and much respect for the Mets’ TV crew, and not just because of my girlhood crush on Ron Darling. They really have done their homework on the Braves, which is smart since they’ll be facing the Mets 18 times this year

Clint Sammons struck out to strand two, which makes that three Ks for Santana in the first two innings. His changeup is nasty (yes, this just in).
Brandon, much respect for Texas and the way they played. And I’ve always been a Rick Barnes fan from his days at Clemson and of course for him standing up to Big Dean.

Nice damage control by Jurrjens there. Leadoff double and a two-out walk didn’t hurt him, got Rivera on a broken bat roller which Escobar handled nicely….Mixed in were back-to-back strikeouts – both called – on Church and Tatis. 0-0 through two

’ll tell you, I’m afraid to say anything about Brandon Hicks, anymore, LOL. I’ve seen him in maybe a donzen games over the last two years, and I didn’t come away with the defensive opinion posted by DOB and the Braves. Since I have to assume they know a little more about the kid than I (HA!), I’m starting to think I was watching somebody else altogether! SCOOTS
I’m not all that impressed either. I think it’s a long shot that he ever amounts to anything. The Braves are known for hyping their prospects since they trade so many of them. The same guys are saying the same things that they said about Marte a few years ago and remember how much hype was coming out of there for Lillibridge last year, the biggest difference this year is that Hicks asset is power and Lilli’s was speed. Since Dave has seemed to buy into the Hicks adventure we will likely get a “good talking to”about these posts. so I might as well end this with an LOL too

Frenchy is really a new man. I don’t expect a lot of homers by him, but I do expect a much higher OBP, AVG, RBI’s, and a lot of doubles.

I’m truly amazed by what we’re seeing from Francoeur. I really am. I mean, I thought he’d look better this spring – maybe like he looked in ‘07… but he doesn’t just look better… he looks totally different. Complete transformation from hacker to HITTER.
The power isn’t there yet, but it’ll come. Gotta get the hitting stroke down first, then the power stroke. When Frenchy get’s to a point where he’s completely comfortable with his adjustments and his ability to make solid contact in any situation, he can them pick his spots when it’s reasonable to swing for the fences. That’s how Chipper does it… swing for solid contact in general, and selectively swing away.
And with Francoeur’s natural ability, if he just makes solid contact day in and day out, he’ll hit 15 HR’s by accident.

Carroll, agreed. VERY nice damage control. Impressive. Jurrjens pitches to contact, but he has the stuff to look for the strikeout when he needs it, which he did in that inning and got it.
Jurrjens got a great chance to be an ace. He’s already a quality pitcher, but he may establish himself as a legit #1. He’s got the stuff, the control, and the poise. Here’s hoping he does just that this year.

I’m watching the game on MLBTV, and I have to say that these Mets announcers are really good. Enjoyable to listen to, and they know their stuff. Complimentary of BOTH teams where it’s deserved. And frankly, they’re talking more intelligently about the team than Chip Caray does half the time.

Gotta agree with your assesment of Francoeur- I haven’t gotten to see him really at all but from what I have been reading it sounds like he really made the effort in the offseason to become more patient and to retool his swing…good for him. And like you said- with his natural ability he should be able to hit for power quite easily if he doesn’t force it. But I will gladly take .300/90RBI/40 Doubles and 15 HR from him anyday.

One thing I’d point out about Jurrjens…
JJ pitched 140+ innings several times at the minor league level. He pitched 188 last year. That innings jump is not a big deal. Most every starter has to make a 40+ inning jump at some point in their career, whether at the minor league or ML level. But here’s my point…
Whenever a player does have to stretch out and pitch more innings than they’re accustomed to, it’s almost certain that he’ll hit a wall at some point.
Through 150 innings, Jurrjens ERA was (if memory serves me correctly) 3.12.
Over the final 38 innings, he added a half a run to his ERA. While a 3.68 ERA is very good, particularly for a rookie, what he did before he hit “the wall” is even more impressive.

Carroll– In view of your crush on Ron Darling, is it a factor that he has an Ivy League education and you have a degree from the southern Ivy League’s Duke? Another interesting Ivy League baseball retiree is Doug Glanville who periodically writes terrific columns in the NY Times. Also since Darling has a deal with Time-Warner and often announces Sunday games and playoff games on Time Warner with Chip Caray and their other announcers, perhaps you could arrange with the Atlanta TBS folks to do analysis on some of these games.

Carroll – you have misplaced reason to praise Barnes. I like Barnes as well but pushing Dean Smith is not a classy move – Rick has even said as much noting how much he regretted the incident, that he has matured a lot since then, etc. Then again, since Dukies praised Collins for pushing Doherty when he was the UNC Head Coach it does not surprise me. Can you imagine the outcry from the Blue Devil nation if someone pushed coach K?
Do you also praise Robin Ventura for “standing up” to Nolan Ryan?
And no I am not a UNC grad but a grad of another ACC school.

After Dean retired a few years later, Barnes’s daughter sent Dean a letter asking why he was retiring since he was still so good, etc? Dean had the class to respond to Barnes’s daughter and in that letter said nothing but praise for her dad. Dean never said a 4 letter word – didn’t have to. Dean Smith was the picture of class and deserves the respect he has earned (ask Bilas who he wanted to play for if he did not play for Duke)

I recall Dean calling out a Clemson player. i could hear him yelling “iturbe, iturbe” and that’s not cool, classy, mature, whatever. So i understood why Rick was irate and I don’t remember him pushing Dean, just confronting him. And part of this is just tongue-in-cheek, OK? Relax.

And yes, Darling’s brains are a big part of the charm. Couldn’t remember which Ivy League school it was. Was thinking dartmouth, so I looked it up. If we trusts wikipedia, here’s some interesting stuff
