Lake Buena Vista, Fla. - Either it’s getting to be about that time in spring training, or it’s the day game after a night game thing, but it seems a little quiet around here this morning at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
(Here’s your clue it’s CR today and not DOB, no Dark Star reference. Can’t claim that one.)
Early in spring when you walk by the batting cages beyond center field, they’re bustling with activity. Not this morning. All was quiet, and I was actually early. Weird concept.
Right on top of things, my first day back on the beat in a while. I just found out the Braves didn’t have to be here until 10. Bobby Cox gave them a few hours to sleep. That’s why they love him.
Just dropped DOB off at the airport so he can go enjoy a weekend of Rock Chalk. My Dookies are safely into the second round, and I can work distraction-free today. Staying up late to watch NCAA hoops is my only reason for being a little blurry-eyed this morning. Of course I didn’t get to watch much of the Dookies. But I’ll take that over watching Belmont take them all the way to the end of last year’s first round game.
But my point? All seems to be calm in Braves camp, as I pick the baton back up and take it for three days from DOB for the weekend. The boys just keep winning and pitching and despite not having three big bats in the lineup in Garret Anderson, Brian McCann and Chipper Jones, the hits keep coming.
Shoot, the spring training games are almost remote control now. I could stay back at the house and write: another win, another solid pitching performance, either Matt Diaz or Jordan Schafer got two more hits, fill in the blank.
Today it’s Derek Lowe on the mound vs. the Marlins and we’d expect no different.
A couple updates for you from around the cage….Chipper still says maybe early in the week.
Garret Anderson gave his right calf a test with some light jogging in the outfield and all went well.
“(Trainers) just wanted me to get the muscle fatigued and see how it responds the next day,” Anderson said. “I didn’t feel anything when I ran at all. I think we waited more than enough time to start running.”
Anderson said it was fair to say if all continued to progress OK, he could be back in the lineup late next week. The real test he said will come baserunning.
“Turning, pushing off, stopping, stuff like that,” Anderson said.
But so far, so good.
Jorge Campillo rejoined the Braves yesterday, and he is set to throw three innings tomorrow behind Tom Glavine. So it sounds like they’ll keep him going long, so they can be flexible with him. He could stretch out and start, or he could be the long man in the bullpen.
The Braves are going to have some decisions to make there, and they’ve got two weeks to figure it out. But he’s a guy who gives them things to think about.
And he’s got the right idea about it.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Campillo said. “I want to pitch good and they have a decision. Whatever they need, if they need me to start, I’ll start, if it’s in the bullpen, then bullpen. See what happens.”
Checked in with Tim Hudson today, just to see where he was in his throwing program. “One day closer” is what he always says, with a twinkle in his eye, which I think is a great way to look at it. And he is. The way time flies these days, he’ll be back out there before we know it.
But for the time being…he threw 75 pitches in a bullpen side session yesterday and said it felt really good. He threw 30 pitches at 50 percent, another 45 at 75 percent. Still working on building volume and intensity. He’s still throwing nothing but fastballs and the four-seamer at that, not the nasty sinker we all know well.
As tempted as he is to want to mix in a sinker here and there, Hudson said this time is allowing him to clean up his mechanics, and he said mechanically he’s as sound as he’s ever been, keeping his arm angle up and staying behind the ball. His goal now is to keep those habits as he builds up his intensity and arm strength.
A few sounds from the dugout today….and those hanging around to catch up with Bobby Cox. Collective Soul lead singer Ed Roland came by today with his wife and kid, and got his picture taken with Cox and visited with Glavine. Also coming over for a visit from the other dugout was Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, who is obviously still close with Cox.
Tommy Hanson and Kris Medlen walked past on their way onto the field, and Fredi goes: “He’s not going to make your team…I’ll take him,” looking at Hanson. Cox nodded toward Medlen and goes: “You want the little guy too.”
Those two young guys are some charmed guys. Lots to look forward to ahead of them. That’s fun.
As for the elder statesman, those a little closer to my age, Glavine throws tomorrow against the Mets. Stay tuned for that.
And without further ado….

From the last blog Random (Seem to be posting right at post time these days. aaargh)
Random,
Regarding your 11:25 post. The enter comments here comes up when you haven’t actually typed anything in the posting box and you inadvertently hit the submit comment box. A more robust system would tell you that you haven’t entered anything to post and not waste posting it anyway. But I think we’ve established that the AJC didn’t exactly go top shelf when they bought/developed this product.
But it does serve the purpose. Thanks for the cover with Roach. I’ve seen those types of posts so much I just ignore. He certainly has the right moniker.
BTW- Mets sent Niese to minors today so it looke like Livan Hernandez will be the number 5.

Continuing the Chipper/Toronto issue from the previous blog, Chipper may just prefer solitude on the road. I was in Chicago last summer for the Braves games and I noticed Chipper eating dinner alone in the bar/restaurant of what I presume was the team hotel (Westin on N. Michigan Ave.)

I had no idea that we have a lot of Clemson Alumni here…I am glad that Purnell said the things he did after last nights loss. The Villanova loss last year was brutual enough. Can’t wait to see Devon Booker next year. Hopefully Olgesby will mature a little more next year too. Did you see Carolina’s recruiting class for next year? The rich get richer. They have at least three studs coming in next year.
Hey DukeBoy….Texas is going to give you Dookies all you can handle on Saturday. And if you survive that….Villanova might be there waiting. I really think Duke can beat Texas and Nova. Unfortunately, they dont match up well with Pitt.

Hope Schafer makes the big club. He’s raking, has stolen 5 bases in 5 tries and is as good at going and gettin’ ‘em as Anderson and has a better arm. More power, better OBP. I see no reason for him NOT to be kept on the big squad other than Anderson not having any options. That is no reason to send Schafer down. Keep the best player and do whatever you have to do with the other.
Does anybody see any reason not to keep the best player? Schafer appears to be the better player. Keep Blanco in case Schafer struggles and as a plug in at the other outfield spots. The Braves seriously need some power in the OF, and Schafer definitely has more power than Anderson or Gregor. His power may be gap power for the time being, but at his age he still has room to add more muscle and bulk.

Heres my problem with our OF situation right now. How do they pick a guy when all of them arent facing the best pitching most of the time in these spring training games. winterville (12:17 pm): “If you are getting ready to make a post but haven’t written anything yet, it will just say “Enter your comments here” in the comments box. My theory is that people are accidentally hitting submit before they have written anything.”
But that begs the question (my question, at least) — how can ANYone “accidentally” hit “Submit”??? But it does happen, and frequently — I’m baffled. Are some people so excited at the prospect of posting that they suffer from premature submission?
Is there some kind of shortcut key to submit a comment? I myself always point and click, which is hard to do “accidentally”, but some kind of shortcut key could be triggered accidentally. I guess.

“Tomato” based sauce is #1 – and Kansas City and Memphis bar-be-que are #1 and #2 – Texas style, when done on a large scale in a pit is also very good. The local BBQ around the small places (the one on highway 61 between Villa Rica and Dallas is the best) have great bar-be-que. It is worth the drive out there on a Sunday afternoon (they don’t open until church is out). The mustard- and vinegar-based sauces are just not to my taste, though when in the Carolinas, everything goes well with a beer.
Now you have me looking forward to getting to Turner Field and toasting Skip & Pete at their chop house and enjoying a sandwich. Though not as good as many of those small places I referenced, it will be good to at least look at the caricatures of the two legends and get this season started!

Dukeboy, you are a boy. I think i was out of college there by the time you went to your first game at Cameron. And you were a toddler when Christian Laettner was winning us back-to-back titles my junior and senior year. Well hopefully we’ll get you another one that you can remember. Can’t say I think this is the year, without much in the way of inside presence, but maybe we’ll get hot and knock everything down. Got to see the ACC final in person and they look like a team that’s figuring out how to win big games. Course, not sure I could have said the same had we played Carolina with Lawson…..without him, different deal.
Good question on Reyes. I’ll have to ask. Got a lot of arms in camp now with Campillo and Vazquez back and Glavine working into the fold.

Carroll, glad to have you on the blog-o-sphere today. though DOB always is good and his comments are informative, you add a certain atmosphere to the scene – thanks.
On center field, I am looking forward to the outfield that will have Schafer in left, Hernandez in center, and Francouer in right. That could really be 3 gold gloves right there – there will be a lot of pitchers wanting to come to Atlanta to have that kind of speed, power, and arms all in the same outfield. I am not forgetting Heyward – there will have to be a place for him – might be a trade in the air for one of the gold glovers.

Dukeboy…Duke is a lot better this season. As soon as Coach K put Elliot Williams in the starting five. However, Pitt is much better than that December game in the Garden in 2007. Blair and Young have blossomed into All American players. Duke relies way too much on the three and has no inside presence. Don’t overlook Nova. American shot lights out in the first half. Nova has a solid inside game too.

Carroll– Welcome back. Did you see this article in The New Republic by a Duke supporter regarding the various pitchfork attitudes out there toward the Blue Devils– http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=77950f2b-9680-4f0a-9de4-0e26a61316b4
While I am an Emory grad, I enjoy Duke Forest and have taught ESL to visiting scholars on campus, so I generally am supportive and wish the best for the team, even though I find Coach K rather detestable in his political attacks on the President. Not surprising though when you consider his Bobby Knight roots.

Looking at Glavines outings last year……… something comes up.
He had 7 “good” outings
March 31…………5 IP………1 ER
April 7……………..6.1……….0 ER
April 29————6 …………2 ER
May 9………………7………….2ER
May 20…………….6………….1ER
May 30……………6IP………..2ER
June 4th…………5IP………..2ER
Thats 7 out of 13 GS. You still have to keep in mind that the last 2 games in which he pitched, which are not in the list above, he was having arm trouble. Having all this in mind can makes us believe that he could still do a fine job. I mean 7 times he pitched 5 or more complete innings without giving up more than 2 runs. If you take away the las 2 games of his season in which he was not 100%…….maybe not even 80%, you could say he pitched fair enough for a 5th starter in 7 out of 11 starts, which is a very good % for a 5th starter. If you want to be more drastic you could say only his last start should be considered as injury asociated, still 7/12 is fair enough if we are talking 5th starter.
I still dont like the idea of having him in the mix but at least if we go by the numbers is not that bad.
I can recall that last season, when he was on the mount, braves didnt give any offensive support to him, I could be mistaken, but thats what I can recall.

The problem is that the deepest he went was 6.1 innings, that’s awful and really stresses the bullpen. He throws too many pitches now and can’t work himself out of trouble like he used to be able to. I’m much happier with Hanson or Reyes filling in Glavine’s spot.

Mekons– Coach K is not someone that I would describe as a comedian or someone with a sense of humor. He made it more than clear last year that he supported McCain. About the only thing I like about Carolina is that Dean Smith has always been very much a liberal politically. As for myself, when I realized during my freshman year in high school that I did not have the talent to play sports in college and win a scholarship, I dropped competitive sports completely, which means I still have the legs for runningand not crippled knees and hips. I had originally wanted to play football for Bobby Dodd, then the reigning coaching hero in Atlanta, and attended lots of Tech football and basketball, so when I care to care about the colleges, Tech still garners the most support from me.

Val, I heard Glavine in an interview about 2 weeks ago say he had never expected to want to play this year (thought last year would be his last), but changed his mind… and that if he’s still effective he might try to pitch next year, if he was wanted. I don’t think he expects to, but he was quite clear that he wasn’t ready to rule it out.
As to the money, I think he got $1 mil guaranteed, then $1 mil for the first day he’s on the 25-man roster, and another $1.25 mil at 30 days on the roster, and again at 60 days.
I really doubt the money is a huge factor; the guy’s made almost $130 mil and I doubt he’s spent it all on golf clubs. I would guess that if he’s not effective, he’ll be disabled with some mysterious arm pain, and then decide to retire rather than rehab again.

Lowe gave up a bunt for a base hit to Bonifacio, then got Baker to ground into a double play. that’s five outs via groundball after the flyballs to start the game, and the ole first inning blemish. oh, make that six. Groundball to short by Hermida.

Please get your facts right. The reason why Delgado did not stand for the national anthem was to protest the U.S. army training in Vieques. I would go with Josh Anderson in CF for the following reasons:
- Anderson has almost 3,000 minor league ABs with a career .294 AVG and a .344 OBP.
- He has played 2 full seasons at the AA level and 2 full seasons at the AAA level.
- At every minor league level he has shown the ability to make adjustments and improve.
- He has been impressive during his 2 ML call-ups (very limited time of course)
- He is not only fast; he’s a good base stealer with a stolen base success ratio over 80%.
In my opinion, Anderson has paid his dues and earned a shot at being the everyday CFer. Everyone thinks Jordan Schafer is the real deal (And I hope they are right), but he has only played half a season above A ball. They are several aspects of Jordan’s game that need improvement (like making contact) and it is better to iron those out in the minors than in the majors. If you do not believe me, just ask Jeff Francoeur.

Again, there was an early experience as I was elected President of my fraternity pledge class right after beginning freshman year, only to quit the fraternity within a couple of months. Then, during my year as Editor of the campus newspaper, The Emory Wheel, we were widely attacked for supposedly anti-fraternity positions in our editorial and news coverage. And interesting to hear you attended Emory with its outstanding basketball traditions after being recruited by Hewitt.

Line on Lowe: five innings, seven hits, four runs, all earned, no walks, two strikeouts. 65 pitches, 17 balls, 48 strikes.

Bravely going forward, sounds good to me. But, that’s more the style I use for chicken. Concerning Olive Oil, I use it all the time on the stove.. However, I don’t like using it on the grill due to flare-ups. Plus, I don’t really like the whole idea of using a drip pan — I prefer indirect heat in that case.
Which I guess is the same thing. Bottom line — drip pans are messy to clean up.

I definitely agree with your assessment of Random’s 1:13pm post. One of the biggest problems in our great country today is the lack of appreciation from some for the sacrifice of others.
It is manifest in the disrespect given to the flag. Anything that is remotely patriotic is deemed by many as militaristic…
We could use a heckuva lot more “militaristic” behavior in the world today.

My son (age 12) is attending the “Coach K” basketball camp at Duke in June and is almost giddy about it. Not that K will be leading the drills himself, of course, but he is supposed to be there and instruct some and they get to play in Cameron.
Regarding the Schafer/Anderson battle: Of course Schafer has the greater upside and is going to be a better major league player, but let’s make sure he gets enough minor league at-bats to cut back on bad habits (like striking out too much). All we have to do is look at the former golden boy in right field for “Exhibit A” on rushing to the majors. (One could also argue that Andruw might have reached his full potential as a hitter had he not been rushed to the majors as a teenager.)

Jersey Gil– I think perhaps I got up on wrong side of bed today or perhaps it is my chronic right heel and its affect on my running, but really, for you to list people like Sharpton, Jackson, et al, who are not Puerto Rican (nor am I) for defining the protest does not create clarity for defining independence versus commonwealth. I could give some credence to ChiChi, but he never stood up politically in any significant way and as for Ivan Rodriguez, he has been a well documented steroid king. However, after reading your defining of Eric Gregg as being a great umpire (because of your own friendship with him) by listing the no-hitter that he umpired while all Braves fans still remember so clearly the playoff fiasco with Livan Hernandez, this lack of logic is not surprising. Apologies in advance for my bombastic self today.

Duke is the most overrated team in college basketball. However, they do a really good job of playing to stheir strengths and covering up their weaknesses. They beat teams that should beat them because they take them out of their game. Then, they make them paly their game. If Coach K would stip being so stubborn and recruit some blue-chippers, then he would easily win more national championships. Hands down the best coach in the game. Not just in X’s and O’s and motivation, he works over the refs better than everyone too. Actually, he may go after blue-chippers and just miss out. I don’t know, I don’t follow College Bball recruiting (just football).
I think Duke loses to Nova. Basically the same team, except Villanova has a better inside game. Nova is much more athletic than Duke though. Of course, gotta give the coaching edge to Duke. Although, Jay Wright is no slouch. If they do some how make it past them, there is no way they beat Pitt. Too much size, strength, and athleticism. Not a good matchup for Duke, or anyone for that matter.

Hasn’t Will Ohman’s pricetag come down far enough to make him a bargain that the Braves could find enough room in their budget for? I read he could be down to as little as $1.5 million for one year. To me the depth he offers as a very effective lefty, and an insurance policy against the big three (Gonzalez, Soriano, Moylan that have all been injured in the last year) getting injured.

Screwball rocks, but does anyone throw one these days? I can’t think of a pitcher that does. It’s a pretty rough pitch on the arm.
Still, I have to say that a great knuckleball is still the coolest pitch around. I used to love watching Joe and Phil Niekro carve up batters back when they had the fastball to keep you honest.
For sheer amazement, Bert Blyleven’s curve was about the most incredible thing I’ve seen. What a buzzsaw!

Blawgdawg – I’m with you on the price gouging. Shameful. Do the Braves let you bring stuff into the park? The Mets were very relaxed about that. You could bring any food and drinks as long as it wasn’t a glass bottle or alcohol. Makes a huge difference in the price of the experience. Plus the food at the park is usually pretty bad. I’d bring a chicken cutlet hero and some other stuff and just buy some beer at the game. I’m hoping the new park has the same rules – I haven’t looked into yet though.

Anders I’m pretty sure you can bring like bottled water and small snacks in, just can’t bring like a cooler and stuff in. I remember when Turner Field first opened, they banned any outside refreshments. People went BESERK, and they changed that policy several weeks into the season that year.
I miss the good ole Fulton County Stadium days. You’d go to the game and sit where you wanted to (none of the ushers checking tickets and stuff like they do now), bring in pretty much what you wanted to, and had very few hassles from anyone working at the stadium. Of course there was only 4,000 people or so at the game, so they certainly didn’t want to run anyone off. And I was young and wasn’t buying the refreshments, but I don’t remember hearing the griping that you here now (deserved griping by the way) about the cost of stuff at the stadium.

Guys, the cost of goods at the ballpark is called “supply and demand”, “market forces”, whatever. They charge more than the corner bodega, because they can. You choose to pay or not, because you can. That’s the way free markets work. You price products at the highest price for which you can sell them, and only stop increasing prices when too few people are willing to pay the price you ask. Why should the ballpark be any different from the company where you work?
Anders

Blawgdawg – Shea would let you bring in those soft coolers and backpacks etc. Plus for a couple of bucks you could go to one of the beer vendors for ice if you needed more during the game to put in the cooler. ncsscoots – When they let baseball live outside the anti-trust system then they also have an obligation to keep them gouging the average fan imo. Baseball (and other sports) have received special rights under our law – they should he held to special expectations imo.
They can price it anyway they want – they just shouldn’t have the right to keep you from bringing in your own stuff when it doesn’t present a danger or nuisance to others imo.

Former NFL QB Dies In Greece Crash.
Pennsylvania authorities say a former NFL quarterback who failed to show for sentencing on drunken driving charges nearly four years ago has been killed in a car crash in Greece.
Chester County detectives say the State Department used fingerprints to confirm the crash victim was 52-year-old William “Jeff” Komlo.
Acting chief county detective Jim Vito says authorities had initially been skeptical about reports of Komlo’s death in a weekend crash.
In July 2005, Komlo failed to show for sentencing on two drunken driving convictions. He had also failed to show for an unrelated hearing two months earlier.
When he went missing, Komlo was also under investigation for fires at his home in Chester Springs, Pa., and another home in Florida.
Komlo played for Detroit, Atlanta and Tampa Bay between 1979 and 1983.

I think two things might put Schafer in AAA to start ‘09 and that’s Anderson is out of options and two is they might feel it could hurt Schafer in the future not spending any time in AAA the way it might have hurt Franc. last year. And really, I’m not 100% sold on Frenchy’s progress this spring. He shouldn’t have any of our full confidence until he can do this starting April 5. He’s also shown NO power which worries me. But read Bill James; major league prospects don’t usually hit .235 in A ball at age 22. Look, I’d love it if we had a legitimate middle-infield prospect, since we’re relatively barren there (thanks again for that Texeira trade, Johnny). But it is very rare for someone that age to suddenly learn how to make acceptable contact. The power and D are nice, but look at SS who are similar in attributes–Bobby Crosby, for example. He hit .300 at 23 in AAA. And he is still a bust in the majors, BECAUSE HE CAN’T MAKE ENOUGH CONTACT. Bobby is being positive and supportive, as is his wont. Hicks might be the exception–a guy who figures it out relatively late. But the ODDS ARE that this guy is not a major league prospect.

Carroll – couple of Duke comments
First of all – you are correct in stating Coach K has a great sense of humor. I heard him speak at an MS Society dinner in Greensboro a few years back. He was awesome. He really should write a book for teenagers. Great speaker with a great sense of humor. I was really impressed.
Seeing him tomorrow at Greensboro Coliseum and for you to appreciate the above comment I will be wearing a different shade of blue. Electric atmosphere with both Duke and UNC in town for the NCAAs.
DOB has no right to be mad at Roy anymore. He came home. His sister was sick. His family lived in this area. He is an alum. Should Stanford fans be angry at Dawkins forever if he is successful at Stanford but leaves to replace Coach K if and when the day arrives? Or Oklahoma mad at Capel (though I do not see him as being tight with K anymore)?
Still can’t wait to get down to Atlanta and see the Braves in 3-4 weeks.
No way I would trade Hanson and I know Freddi was kidding, but Bobby should have claimed Mike Stanton OF and Matt Dominguez 3B from the Marlins. Those two can flat out hit and will be starting high A ball this spring as well

This is hilarious… Jim Caple on Espn:
“Julian Tavarez set a big league record for candor last week when the veteran reliever explained why he signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals after turning down a similar offer during the winter. “Why did I sign with the Nationals?” he said to a group of reporters. “When you go to a club at 4 in the morning, and you’re just waiting, waiting, a 600-pounder looks like J-Lo. And to me this is Jennifer Lopez right here. It’s 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. So, Nationals [are] Jennifer Lopez to me.”
In other words, Tavarez considers the Nationals fat and ugly, and he only signed with them because he was drunk and desperate, and it was so late he was unable to make an intelligent decision. But other than that, they’re a winner!

Congrats on the Kansas game DOB. I’m not much of a college B-ball guy, but felt obligated to watch the game with NDSU making the dance. Was a good game. Even living in this state, I had zero idea how good Woodside is/was.
It’s too bad he’s only 5-11, because that guy can definitely shoot, but I suspect he will not be on any of the NBA teams’ radar because of his small frame. Even Steve Nash (who the announcers kept comparing him to) is listed at 6′3″.
Anyhow. First college basketball game I’ve watched every minute of in over a decade. Now that NDSU is elligible, I might start paying more attention in the future. But maybe not. Love taking the kids to the NBA D-League games here in town, but just don’t like the game itself enough to watch on TV that often. Used to watch the T-Wolves with Garnett, in the “dead months” of winter, during the week in the NFL season and before baseball starts.
But I have to admit, the college game of basketball is actually much more exciting than the dunkfest that is the NBA.
Anyhow, like I said… congrats.

Them Marlins are going to be tough again. Their pitching might be a little better too. Lowe needs to talk to Hudson when he faces them again. Huddy would throw a ton of off speed stuff and they were flailing away most of the time. You can’t be off your game when you’re facing them, cause they eat up mistakes.

I’m starting to think the Braves are going to bite the bullet and start the season with Schafer in CF. He does everything Josh and Blanco do, but he is a far superior hitter. It will cost them a year of free agency and he really could use some time at AAA, but if he keeps this up for the rest of ST, he’d really have nothing more to prove in the minors.

I don’t know that it’s so much that Schafer has anything left to prove in the minors, but, it would be nice to see him get some ABs against advanced pitching on a daily basis before he gets thrown in the fire. Maybe to see if he can make it against tough LH or cut down on his Ks or both. Fellas, he won’t be facing ST pitching after April 5, and he ain’t gonna hit .400, so let him ease into it a little, huh?
Of course, my only “source” is my brain, but it says a month at AAA is where he’s ticketed.

Options be damned, I’d start Schafer in CF. If you are management and you make a decision that Schafer is the future, and that he is ready now, you start in CF and either DFA Anderson or trade him. Schafer’s not changing positions so one year of Josh doesn’t accomplish much, even if you considered them equal. Schafer’s the guy.

“Richard Hendrix gonna make it to the NBA?” Couch Tater
It’s hard to say. Last few games, he’s run into early foul trouble and been kind of a non-factor. It’s funny, because the D-League is so much about guys ball-hoggin. Makes for fast paced, high-scoring games. But everybody is essentially “showcasing” themselves, by trying to do too much. Yet if they all realized that the reason most of them didn’t get drafted is due to an incomplete game in the first place.
So if they all realized that the NBA teams looking to call any of them up, are probably looking for guys that aren’t gonna come up and try and do too much. Nature of the beast.
I really thought that Blake Ahearn would have stayed up after making it to the Heat last year. He was the D-League rookie of the year last year. Guy reminds me of Woodside. Can pretty much shoot from anywhere at anytime. Great first step.
But he’s been inconsistent this year. It’s fun rooting for them. And the kids love getting to know them at all the family events and meet and greets. All seem like a bunch of good guys when it comes to making time for the local youth.

’scoots, AAA, or AA? I’m a little confused about the quality of players at each level, and I know you watch a lot of minor league ball.
Seems to me that the Braves have typically put the best prospects at AA, and used AAA more as a holding tank for older guys maybe trying to resurrect their careers, or major leaguers on rehab assignment. Or even just “prospects” who really arent’ any more but are too old for the lower levels.
Is that accurate? And do most other teams do likewise?
Anyway, I’m on record as wanting Schafer up this year (unless he just tanks the next couple of weeks), but must admit, a lot of you smart guys who’s opinions I respect seem to think he should start in the minors, so my knees are shaking a little on it.

I think I would prefer to start with Josh or Gregor and only after Schafer loses his year, sometime in June or July, call him up. But from the way he has been playing, and how poorly Anderson has played, I’m just starting to suspect he’ll get the job. It’s just a gut feeling. I think AAA is really valuable for a player. You’re facing a lot of AAAA pitchers, guys with ML experience, who will do just about anything to get back to the majors. At AA, you’re seeing a lot of young guys who aren’t going any higher.
If you can hit at AAA, you can hit in the majors.
The problem with Josh is he’s too good to sneak through waivers. He’s a pretty valuable guy to have around, but not valuable enough to start. Until recently, I thought the Braves would go with him to season Schafer, but I just sense that the Braves have changed their thinking. No evidence at all, of course, but I felt strongly they’d send Schafer down up until this week, and I no longer feel that nearly as strongly.

Mekons I agree on some of your points but not the ‘if you can hit AAA you can hit MLB’. There are lots of guys in AAA that hit that don’t translate to the bigs. Mike Hessman comes to mind. A lot of times AAA is loaded with players that can’t get over the hump and be consistent in the bigs and some would even argue that AA is more competitive.

Jones has not played or hit in over a week. Anderson has done nothing yet. The Braves 15-4 record is a J-O-K-E!!! They will be lucky to win 75 games. They will finish just ahead of the Nationals in the NL East. Even the young Fish will beat them out. Jones and Anderson combined will not see 600 at bats this season. Josh Anderson is an accomplished base running threat. His 80 percent success rate at stealing bases proves this. But for any lead off hitter to be great at stealing bases, he has to be able to reach base first.
Anderson’s .340 OBP in the minors sends up all kinds of warning bells. He doesn’t draw enough walks and strikes out too much. Any good lead off type hitter has to be able to make contact consistently, reach base and be able to get into scoring position on his own.
You can’t steal first base. Anderson has one walk in 43 at bats so far in spring training. His OBP is .295, not good.

Thormon is the exception to the rule. I phrased it badly. AAA exposes AA overachievers, as a rule. The real talent is at AA as a rule, but nearly every real prospect gets at least a month or two at AAA to get them used to ML-level pitching and hitting by the AAAA guys, like Thormon and Hessman. Very few real prospects fail at AAA, but not giving them that exposure can hurt them later.
Personally, I’m getting more confused the more I think about it. If I were Bobby, I’d have the starting pitchers vote. We really can’t afford a leadoff hitter with a .190 BA and no walks to start the season.
It’s such a tradeoff, a hot start (perhaps) with Schafer out there versus a better career and significant $$ savings by farming him out.

Nolie, I was talking about real prospects. Did anyone seriously think Hessman was going to be a star in the majors? Or Thorman? It’s a subtle point, perhaps, but everyone knew Andruw Jones was going to be a star, but AAA can expose weaknesses that are not obvious in AA. If the AA star can hit AAA, it vets him. Thorman, to use one example, had a huge hole in his swing. He managed to have a good year at AAA, and hit fairly well in the majors in his first year, but it was clear that he had a weakness.
Very few people succeed in the majors without some exposure to AAA. College players are sometimes the exception, since they were facing high A competition for a couple of years. But we’re talking about high school players.
It ain’t like AAAA players tore up AAA. They were good enough to get some time in the majors, but few were real stars in AAA. You are confusing role players with real stars. And I think Schafer is going to be a star. For his development, it might be best to face some of these guys battling to get a few more months of ML experience, if only for the pension, to see how major league pitchers can find your weakness and allow him to adjust.
But the main point of my posts has been that the Braves, who firmly believed he needed AAA seasoning, might be changing their minds.

AAA is tougher than AA. Most prospects like you say play in AAA as well as AA, though some may be called uo early from AAA. Sometimes the very highest talent might seem to be in AA but that is a small percent of the playing pool and the remaining base of players is better in AAA than in AA.

Nolie: Sometimes the very highest talent might seem to be in AA but that is a small percent of the playing pool and the remaining base of players is better in AAA than in AA.
I don’t think we are disagreeing here. There are many players who reach their peak at AA and management knows it. At AAA there are AAAA players, AAA players, and real talents making a brief stop. See Andruw, Chipper, Klesko, et al. Pitchers are more likely to successfully jump to the majors from AA. Hitters need some chance to regularly see ML level pitchers before they do it for real.
Just for instance, Willie Mays jumped from AA to the majors and went 0-32 or something like that. He was about to quit, but Durocher told him he was going to start in CF no matter what. In these days, even with Bobby Cox, there would not be that large a margin of error.

TN – understood! It seems parties have strayed from the value they should represent and instead just want the vote. Darn shame. Its sad Americas memory is so short. Less than a life time ago the Nazis were within a few months of owning it all. We can’t forget humans have competition coded in their DNA. I too, wanted to be pro baseball player, but some other guys with more talent beat me out. That’s the way it goes. We should embrace the competition and differences, and remember the rest of the world had electricity and the Internet ( among notable others ) because of the USA and the lives lost after our founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence – which by the way, was considered suicide at the time.

The true test will come in the next couple of days with Texas, Texas A&M and OSU playing higher ranked teams. The Aggies and Pokes will give a good show but will most likely fall in the end. Out of the three I actually think the Longhorns have the better chance of winning against a Duke team that is really not all that strong (Sorry Carroll).

The brilliance of Anders is that reading some of his posts makes you think he’s just a good-guy Mets’ fan.
The truth is that if you read all of his posts, you realize that he’s a douche-bag. This realization typically comes (or at least came for me) after you’ve read him, for the ninth time, mention how Soriano knew his elbow was wrong, before singing the contract, and that Anders somehow knew this before the signing, of course not mentioning it until after the elbow problems.
This same realization can also occur after you’ve read Anders, an infinite number of times, try to get under DOB’s skin. Now, I’m all for messin’ with the man, but it’s gotta be good. Anders’ comedy is like watching a Chris Woodward AB; it ain’t pretty.

Noc-a-Homer Simpson – Hope you go this deep into the blog. I am a South Carolina boy also. Born in Greenville [Berea area] live in Easley now. My gotigers72 screen name refers to my Clemson Tigers. I can say MY because I went to school there and they are recepients of my dad’s money. Don’t know what’s in the water at Clemson, but they need to filter that water. Their sports teams continue to play lights out, then go in the dumper when it counts. Bowl games, ACC hoops tournament, NCAA hoops tournament, College World Series. We have some ACC football and baseball championships, and 1 NCAA golf championship. The place we hang our hat is our 1981 NCAA football championship. I’m hoping our new football coach, Dabo Swinney, will turn around the school’s fortunes in sports by at least winning an ACC football championship before too much longer. But for now, we do deserve the label of choker, unfortunately.
As far as barbecue, I’m not a fan of mustard based sauce. I think the area around Lexington and eastern North Carolina is where mustard based is king. I prefer tomato based with a little vinegar in it. The best place I have ever eaten barbecue is a little slice of heaven in Arkansas. Hot Springs to be exact. A tiny place named “McClards Barbecue”. Sliced on a bun. Tomato based sauce which I get on the side because it doesn’t need much sauce. They have those smokers going and you can smell it several blocks away. My wife’s hometown. The first place we go when we visit. When we leave, we throw a few pounds in the cooler along with several bottles of sauce to help us with withdrawals.

BAS, the Count thing is a very old school blog thing, from back in the day when uga, BraveDave, Utahwayne, Bravonam, and the vampire Serbok, a.k.a. “The Crazy Diamond” ruled the overnights. You’d never see ‘em during the day, only during the overnight. They were the blog’s graveyard shift vampires. We’d talk about the need for one of them to adopt a vampire moniker. We always talked about how Count Chopula seemed like a good one for one of them to take on. Uga is finally doing it. Makes sense for him since he eats and drinks at Chops and the Chop House ALOT. Uga is definitely not a name changer though, just seems to be taking on the Count alter ego (without changing his writing style) for the fun of it and as a winking nod to the ole days of JJS, BobJ, CL, Grinch, SJA, Rosalynn, Eric the Elder, Serbok and Bravedave (and maybe to reverse the fortunes of the Braves?).

Josh Anderson’s .340 career minor league OBA is obviously not great. But if he can do that in the majors, the truth is that his OBA would only be 5 or so points worse than an average major league leadoff hitter. His OBA would really only be costing the team about 2 runs relative to the average leadoff hitter over 770 pas (if every 10 points or so of OBA is worth about 3 runs over 700 pas).
Really what kills hims is the lack of SLG. Every 10 or so SLG points is worth about 2 runs over 770 pas. His SLG in the minors is worth about 40 points less than an average MLB leadoff hitter. That’s about an 8 run deficit.
If he only does what he did in the minors, he’s worth about 10 runs less than an average MLB leadoff hitter combined with his OBA and SLG. That of course ignores his baserunning. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=421535
For an average baserunner, Josh may very well be worth +5 to +10 runs. Relative to the average leadoff hitter, however, his speed gets marginalized by the other burners there and he’s only likely worth at most b/w +1 to +3 runs relative to the average leadoff hitter on the bases. In sum, Josh is likely worth 7 to 10 runs less than an average leadoff hitter if he gets 770 pas.
If he makes the team, he likely should be batting 8th where he can be a + value hitter relative to the average NL dude at that slot. His OBA would be 25 points higher than average and thus worth +6.7 runs over 630 pas, and his SLG would be about 10 points higher than league average and thus worth about +1.6 runs over 630 pas and his baserunning would be significantly better than the average 8 hitter, thus allowing him to gain more of a full benefit of his +5 to +10 baserunning value relative to the average baserunner.
I guess what I’m saying is that Josh could maybe be worth +10 to +15 runs above average if he bats 8th but worth 10 runs below average if he leads off. He’d also likely be worth 10 to 15 runs less as a leadoff hitter than either Kelly or Yunel. But Josh will likely bat first anyway because he’s wicked fast, lol. I’d feel a whole lot better about Josh if he had the minor league OBA of Brett Gardner

Matt Diaz is hitting .395, Atlanta is probably going to sit him in favor of the Garret Anderson.

The point was that the bloggers that bring politics into the BASEBALL BLOG, do it to promote their personal party views. This venue , as DOB has stated often, is an intended haven away from the traditional things that divide us(politics, religion, etc.) So, for those that can’t keep their traps shut about their views, they should find Hannity’s or Olberman’s sites to rail about their personal leanings. Random. Exactly. The two party system is broken. Both the Republicans and Democrats are totally corrupt. Our country is no longer divided in the center. Both parties have leaned so far to the left that in reality, the Republicans are on the left and the Democrats are actually Socialists.
Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating public or state ownership. Ring any bells as to the conduct of the Obama administration?
America no longer has a right, nor is it right. Our ship is leaning far to one side and it’s about to be swamped if we don’t wake up and fix it.

Here is a prediction from some dude by the name of Jason Lowry. Take it with a grain of salt as he doesn’t even seem to know that Tom Glavine, Tommy Hanson or Jordan Schafer even exist.

Looking at Yankees 3rd or 4th starter which is Joba Chamberlain, his stats have to pop some eyes. I mean, the kid started 12 games, had lots of relieve appearances and yet he managed to have a 2.60 ERA. Thats much better than our #3, of course, only 100 IP is not enough to tell.

Has any Denizen seen Brandon Hicks play-either in the minors last season or while he was at Texas A&M? Kid seems to have some great power and great defense-possibly a replacement for Chipper or at SS with Yunel moved to third. He’s 24, so might be ready relatively soon.
I know he strikes out WAY too much, but TP is working on that (I know, for whatever that may be worth). Anyone with a good evaluation?

I love the people saying Schafer needs to move up to AAA to see “more advanced pitching”, when the pitching in AA is arguably better.

Here’s a BA snippet on Hicks (not much, but something):
That scenario led to Hicks attending Texas A&M, where he won the shortstop job and helped turn around the Aggies while hitting .338/.536/.419. Some scouts still questioned his ability to hit, with some suggesting Hicks could be overdrafted due to the lack of college middle infielders in 2007. He wound up going in the third round with the 108th overall pick to the Braves, who believe Hicks is one of several steals they garnered last June.
“Our guys feel like he has a chance to be a special player,” scouting director Roy Clark said. “He’s a strong, athletic shortstop with great range, particularly up the middle, with a strong arm. He can run, and he gets down the line very well. He also has strong hands with a good swing.”
Hicks impressed in short stints at Rookie-level Danville and low Class A Rome in 2007 before opening more eyes during instructional league and spring training, prompting the Braves to have him open 2008 with high Class A Myrtle Beach. A pitcher at San Jacinto who sat in the low 90s, Hicks has one of the organization’s strongest infield arms.

Lew – WE SHOULD NOT move Yunel from SS, he is very good there
Hicks could be a likely 3B Chipper replacement candidate from what I have heard if he learns to hit MLB pitching ???

Coach, actually Cox could decide to go that route (five OFs) at least to begin the season, because they won’t need fifth starter until Apri 18th. But knowing him and knowing the situation with relievers coming off surgeries, etc, if I had to guess now I’d say he’d carry an extra reliever early on. If Moylan’s on opening day roster, I’m pretty certain he’ll carry extra reliever, because he’s said they’ll be careful not to use Moylan back-to-back days right away.

Lew, I’ve stated several times that, having seen Hicks in Fall League and having talked to scouts and Cox and Pendleton about him many times, everyone’s in agreement: The kid plays outstanding SS defense, plus-defense by MLB standards right now, and has very good power. I’ve already suggested they could move him to 3B, as well. Don’t know if that’s being considered or will be, since his SS defense is so good.
Only significant area that needs work is strikeouts. Could certainly stand to hit for higher average, too, but with his power and outstanding defense …

Hicks is a possibility I guess, but shouldn’t forget Eric Campbell. Interesting, comparing their numbers at MB last year:
Hicks: 342 AB; .234/.335/.480 (.815 OPS); 19 HR; 122 K’s; 45 BB.
Campbell: 330 AB; .255/.362/.479 (.841 OPS); 19 HR; 58 K’s; 50 BB.
Both will be 23 this year (Cambell about a month older).
Campbell is a more disciplined hitter, and is a natural 3B (and from what I’ve heard, a talented one – scoots?).
Campbell has had attitude/discipline problems, but he came back from (yet another) suspension to post a good season in ‘08. Got to hope he’ll mature a little – he’s in a great position as a Braves’ 3B prospect, considering Chipper’s age and injury history.

I don’t think we are disagreeing much at all. I agree with most of what you have said, just took exception to your blanket statement that everybody who can play well in AAA can do so in the bigs. It is mostly true but there have been enough exceptions that we can’t automatically assume that for everybody.

Where do you think Schafer should play? Roach
tough question. I lean towards starting him in AAA for a couple hundred at bats for a bunch of reasons most of which have already been mentioned on the board. Especially with AAA team so close to the Ted he would be quickly available if they are having problems with the Braves CFer. I’m not ultra hard on that concept though, I agree that Schafer has looked very good this spring and I can understyand why y’all want him up right away, I just think that a little AAA seeasoning helps most players in the long run.
Most teams don’t place all that much emphasis on ST numbers. Generally only those players already on the cusp are gonna be affected. For instance, Heyward could hit .500 with half a dozenn homers and still be kept in the minors, but the Schafer/Anderson thing is probably up in the air at least to some extent.
I will be a bit surprised though if he and Hanson don’t start the year at AAA unless ST injuries rear their ugly head. We’ll see.

“Can we please STOPPP the political comments”
Amen. You guys who keep posting political stuff, and many of you are “regulars” who should (and do) know the policy – do you think that I, or every other person who blogs here, doesn’t have political opinions? Of course we do. But most of us agree to the informal rules of the blog. Some of you are just too insightful to be held back by such restrictions, I guess.
Politics is an emotional and incendiary issue. Every time one of you guys posts your views, I’m very tempted to respond, and I’m sure most other bloggers are as well. But most of us can confine that discussion to appropriate forums, whether that’s around the breakfast table with our families, at dinner with friends, or posting on blogs that invite such issues.
Give it a rest.

I saw Hicks last year (I live in Myrtle) and he’s got some pop – to hit 19 homers playing at the ballpark here is saying something – it faces due east, directly into the wind blowing in from the ocean.
Also saw Hanson (once) during his cup of coffee and am looking forward to seeing Heyward and Freeman (for about five minutes before they get called up).
