Nice win last night by the Duke..balanced scoring all around…Bring On Texas…Go Duke… and Go Braves..
March 20th, 200912:19 pm
From the last blog Random (Seem to be posting right at post time these days. aaargh)
Regarding your 11:25 post. The enter comments here comes up when you haven’t actually typed anything in the posting box and you inadvertently hit the submit comment box. A more robust system would tell you that you haven’t entered anything to post and not waste posting it anyway. But I think we’ve established that the AJC didn’t exactly go top shelf when they bought/developed this product.
But it does serve the purpose. Thanks for the cover with Roach. I’ve seen those types of posts so much I just ignore. He certainly has the right moniker.
BTW- Mets sent Niese to minors today so it looke like Livan Hernandez will be the number 5.
March 20th, 200912:21 pm
Welcome back, CR. Maybe by the time I hit the submit button, more bloggers will be on. Maybe, they don’t realize your new blog is up.
March 20th, 200912:22 pm
No Francouer in the line up… im diasappointed.
March 20th, 200912:26 pm
Kenny Powers has now joined the blog
DukeBoy – You know the rules. Get an extra base hit – get a day off. Frenchy really needed a day off. Been a while.
March 20th, 200912:28 pm
Carroll Rogers, your witty intellect and superior inquisitiveness have been missed!
With that said, you had me all excited to see KK’s curve ball last night. Only problem is: He was in hiding and I have to wait longer.
Continuing the Chipper/Toronto issue from the previous blog, Chipper may just prefer solitude on the road. I was in Chicago last summer for the Braves games and I noticed Chipper eating dinner alone in the bar/restaurant of what I presume was the team hotel (Westin on N. Michigan Ave.)
March 20th, 200912:29 pm
Hope Glavine throws well tommorrow.
March 20th, 200912:30 pm
Wonder why Braves’ radio taking today off…they were on yesterday, tomorrow and Sunday. Guess 4 days in a row asking too much. Need some help following the game today, Carroll.
good for Frenchy…
March 20th, 200912:31 pm
yep they’re still playing the logical song….means it’s time for me to eat lunch.
Thanks Jeff321….KK must have been personally teasing you!
DukeBoy, what’s your story? alum?
On another note, Heyward is in trouble of entering Bill Brasky territory. Jayson Stark is reporting the Heyward hosted the Grammy’s and gave every award to Cory Hart. I also saw that Terrance Moore talked to Heyward’s family and found out his family crest is of a barricuda eating Neil Armstrong
Maddux im sorry but the Longhorns are going home…
March 20th, 200912:32 pm
I had no idea that we have a lot of Clemson Alumni here…I am glad that Purnell said the things he did after last nights loss. The Villanova loss last year was brutual enough. Can’t wait to see Devon Booker next year. Hopefully Olgesby will mature a little more next year too. Did you see Carolina’s recruiting class for next year? The rich get richer. They have at least three studs coming in next year.
Hey DukeBoy….Texas is going to give you Dookies all you can handle on Saturday. And if you survive that….Villanova might be there waiting. I really think Duke can beat Texas and Nova. Unfortunately, they dont match up well with Pitt.
I'm on a Boat
He’s been hitting well this spring. Frenchy should be back to his top form in the season.
I expect nicer talk from someone who calls himself Maddux! (or herself?!)
March 20th, 200912:33 pm
Duke Boy: Should be a good game. Pull up a chair and drink some beers. Hookem!!!
Carroll: Isnt it Reyes turn tommorrow? What will he do now that Campillo and Glavine are back?
March 20th, 200912:34 pm
My story… Got to go to Cameron Indoor at age 3 and ive been a fan ever since (16 years).
Duke should make it past Texas and Nova. If they get to the elite 8 and face Pitt, it will be hard for the boys from Cameron to win. But they’ve done it before…….
March 20th, 200912:35 pm
Carroll: Im a man, but Im not 40!!! Not talking smack at all. Just excited about a great matchup in the 2nd round. Good luck to your boys.
Carroll-Come on now-I’ve met you and you’re not a day over 25.
Bravely going forward
March 20th, 200912:36 pm
So since we have some carolina folks and certainly some georgia folks, we can settle it here. Which is supreme? Ketchup, vinegar, or mustard-based BBQ? Vote now!
March 20th, 200912:37 pm
DukeBoy – That’s a good story. Never been, but it looks like a crazy place. Best time of your life right now – enjoy!
March 20th, 200912:38 pm
Billy, the Blue Devils ran with Pitt last season at Madison Square Garden, if they both make it that far it should be a great game. Duke is a much better team than last season.
As for Nova i was not at all impressed with their performance last night.
March 20th, 200912:39 pm
I’m On A Boat…great point. Never doubt a team led by Coach K.
Hope Schafer makes the big club. He’s raking, has stolen 5 bases in 5 tries and is as good at going and gettin’ ‘em as Anderson and has a better arm. More power, better OBP. I see no reason for him NOT to be kept on the big squad other than Anderson not having any options. That is no reason to send Schafer down. Keep the best player and do whatever you have to do with the other.
Does anybody see any reason not to keep the best player? Schafer appears to be the better player. Keep Blanco in case Schafer struggles and as a plug in at the other outfield spots. The Braves seriously need some power in the OF, and Schafer definitely has more power than Anderson or Gregor. His power may be gap power for the time being, but at his age he still has room to add more muscle and bulk.
March 20th, 200912:42 pm
I think Schafer should make the big league club..
Billy Walsh, you got Wayne In Utah, gotigers72, Salty (not Saltywoody, the other one, LOL), and some others I know I’ve missed. A little harsh sometimes hanging around all these Dawgs, but not so much you can’t stand it. HA!
March 20th, 200912:43 pm
Heres my problem with our OF situation right now. How do they pick a guy when all of them arent facing the best pitching most of the time in these spring training games. Yeah Schafer looks great right now, but how will he fare when Oswalt and guys like that dial it up in the Regular season. Its a whole new game in the regular season.
winterville (12:17 pm): “If you are getting ready to make a post but haven’t written anything yet, it will just say “Enter your comments here” in the comments box. My theory is that people are accidentally hitting submit before they have written anything.”
But that begs the question (my question, at least) — how can ANYone “accidentally” hit “Submit”??? But it does happen, and frequently — I’m baffled. Are some people so excited at the prospect of posting that they suffer from premature submission?
Is there some kind of shortcut key to submit a comment? I myself always point and click, which is hard to do “accidentally”, but some kind of shortcut key could be triggered accidentally. I guess.
March 20th, 200912:44 pm
Schafer probably needs more time in the high minors. he still strikes out too much
March 20th, 200912:45 pm
“Tomato” based sauce is #1 – and Kansas City and Memphis bar-be-que are #1 and #2 – Texas style, when done on a large scale in a pit is also very good. The local BBQ around the small places (the one on highway 61 between Villa Rica and Dallas is the best) have great bar-be-que. It is worth the drive out there on a Sunday afternoon (they don’t open until church is out). The mustard- and vinegar-based sauces are just not to my taste, though when in the Carolinas, everything goes well with a beer.
Now you have me looking forward to getting to Turner Field and toasting Skip & Pete at their chop house and enjoying a sandwich. Though not as good as many of those small places I referenced, it will be good to at least look at the caricatures of the two legends and get this season started!
March 20th, 200912:46 pm
Any of you south carolina folks (i was born in greenville, myself) care to explain the significance of mustard-based carolina style barbecue?
who provides more power: Schafer or Anderson?
March 20th, 200912:47 pm
nice answer, jon-b. i see you are an expert. you should be a judge on food network bbq competitions.
March 20th, 200912:48 pm
Somebody help jon-b out here, LOL. A good palette is a terrible thing to waste…
March 20th, 200912:49 pm
uh oh, are you a mustard fan, ncscoots?
Schafer and Anderson are both either gonna bat 1 or 8 so I dont think power should be a big factor. SB and OBP should be the deciding factors on who starts. And the one who can go get the ball in the gaps the best.
You know, I Google Imaged “Carroll Rogers Braves” to see if there’s a pic available, and this is what I got:
I don’t know where to start with that picture…
Kenny Powers believes Schafer is the better choice in CF. Kenny Powers could strike out Anderson any day of the week. In fact Kenny Powers would send a limo to pick up Anderson to make sure he was in the lineup.
P.S. Kenny Powers HATES Duke
HOKIEBRAVES-What year did you graduate?1971 for me.Cant wait for football season.
March 20th, 200912:50 pm
Neon Deion</strong: “Where McCarver?”
The question is, “Where’s BASEBALL???”
Answer: certinly not on this blog today. Not much.
March 20th, 200912:51 pm
Yea I wonder the same thing about why people do it. Maybe they just hit it before they are about to start writing to get it ready. I guess you would just have to do it to really explain how it happens.
nossir, I’m a vinegar man. Although, to be perfectly honest, the only kind of barbecue I actually don’t like is “outa”.
not a fan of bbq, random?
Dukeboy, you are a boy. I think i was out of college there by the time you went to your first game at Cameron. And you were a toddler when Christian Laettner was winning us back-to-back titles my junior and senior year. Well hopefully we’ll get you another one that you can remember. Can’t say I think this is the year, without much in the way of inside presence, but maybe we’ll get hot and knock everything down. Got to see the ACC final in person and they look like a team that’s figuring out how to win big games. Course, not sure I could have said the same had we played Carolina with Lawson…..without him, different deal.
Good question on Reyes. I’ll have to ask. Got a lot of arms in camp now with Campillo and Vazquez back and Glavine working into the fold.
Put me down for vinegar-based.
March 20th, 200912:52 pm
Carroll, any word on when the next round of cuts is going to happen?
March 20th, 200912:53 pm
Kenny Powers..why do you hate Duke?
Gonzo the Clown
if ya’ll like barbeque, you should come to athens, we have the only all-you-can eat fresh air barbecue in existence. 8 bucks gets you all the barbeque, brunswick stew, beans, bread, etc. plus a drink. pretty bad-ass if you ask me.
March 20th, 200912:54 pm
Football is for the people who are not fortunate enough to be able to hit a 90 m.p.h fastball
Thank you BRAVELY GOING FORWARD, but really my only credentials are that my doctor told me to lose 50 pounds by summer. Evidently I haven’t been as discerning as I should have been. Also, I have been job-transferred from a lot places so have way too much experience in eating.
Carroll, glad to have you on the blog-o-sphere today. though DOB always is good and his comments are informative, you add a certain atmosphere to the scene – thanks.
On center field, I am looking forward to the outfield that will have Schafer in left, Hernandez in center, and Francouer in right. That could really be 3 gold gloves right there – there will be a lot of pitchers wanting to come to Atlanta to have that kind of speed, power, and arms all in the same outfield. I am not forgetting Heyward – there will have to be a place for him – might be a trade in the air for one of the gold glovers.

Anders (12:19 pm): “The enter comments here comes up when you haven’t actually typed anything in the posting box and you inadvertently hit the submit comment box. A more robust system would tell you that you haven’t entered”
So many commenter here DO suffer from submission prior to entering.
Well, there’s clinics for such unfortunates.
PS: “inadvertently hit the submit comment box”, my axe.

vinegar makes all food better
Dukeboy…Duke is a lot better this season. As soon as Coach K put Elliot Williams in the starting five. However, Pitt is much better than that December game in the Garden in 2007. Blair and Young have blossomed into All American players. Duke relies way too much on the three and has no inside presence. Don’t overlook Nova. American shot lights out in the first half. Nova has a solid inside game too.
March 20th, 200912:58 pm
Good blog today, Carroll. I’m looking forward to seeing how Tommy is tomorrow. Apart from who plays CF, it’s the only real question mark entering the season. I have mixed feelings; I want him to do well, but he’s also blocking Jo Jo, who I think really deserves another shot. But I would much rather have too much pitching than what we had last year.
Art in TN
lol is 32 too young Carroll
thanks for the feedback, carol. glad to hear you like vinegar best. me, too.
March 20th, 200912:59 pm
Billy… all good points. You might be right. Looking ahead their recruting class for next season is primarily focues on BIG MEN. They’ve signed 2 of the top 10 Big Men. If they develop, which I presume they will, and Everyone comes back i.e. Gerald Henderson Duke will be a force to be reckoned with.
But I’m not rady to give up on this season. Upsets happen, thats why its called March Madness.
March 20th, 20091:00 pm
Curious that right around the time KU starts playing, DOB mysteriously disappears and hands things over to Carrol.
Wait, nevermind, not curious at all.
Good blog, CR. Great blurb about Huddy. Can’t even imagine how good the staff would be with him in it…
March 20th, 20091:01 pm
Jeff321 (12:41 pm yesterday): “The Braves have done really well this spring. However, most of the players driving in the runs and stealing bases are going to be in the minors.. Just something to think about.”
Braves RBI Leaders — Diaz (11), BJones (9), Prado (9), Freeman (7), Francoeur (7), Infante (6), Norton (6), Johnson (5). Yep, Minor Leaguers all — at least 1 or 2 out of 8. That IS the meaning of “most” in your fantasy world of imagineering, right?
Braves SB Leaders (all 5 of them) — Schafer (5), JAnderson (1), Diaz (1), Gorecki (1), Prado (1), all else (0) — great sample size you got there.
“Just something to think about”???
Or perhaps just something for you to pretend make-believe with, with your feelings and emotions and memories and all.
Carroll, when is the next round of cuts?
March 20th, 20091:02 pm
So how long do ya’ll think it will be before Schafer can actually succeed without the obligatory line about, “of course, he was suspended 50 games for suspected…”
will schafer truly be able to crawl out from under his shadow?
March 20th, 20091:03 pm
And thanks Lew!
March 20th, 20091:04 pm
I forget, which Radiohead album is “Imagineering” on?
Carroll, I got the Blue Devils in the final four…don’t let me down!
March 20th, 20091:05 pm
Carroll, at age 19 i might not be able to remember Christian and Grant, but i sure can remember 2001.
Is your show any good? I don’t get HBO so I’m waiting on the DVD release.
Can I trust your humble opinion, can you even top Foot Fist Way?
I’m also wondering if you hung out with John Rocker for research…
March 20th, 20091:06 pm
Andy K, it would have been today if not for the flu bug going around….
Marlins skipper Gonzalez has a rule that all his players be out in front of the dugout during the national anthem. I really like that touch. I know Bobby is laid back about that and gives guys a choice. It is 162 games, but i like the touch. …guess you kinda wish guys would do it on their own.
Bonifacio flies out on second pitch from Lowe, and we’re off.
cheld that pic was awesome. im making it my background.
One final WBC comment.
Did anyone see that David Wright played the entire last game in pain and thought he had a broken toe? Turns out it was a broken toe nail but still.
These guys are pushing themselves to play for their country. They are not ready for that!
If Wright’s toe would have been broken he could have permanently injured himself.
This tournament needs to be moved to later in the year…
March 20th, 20091:07 pm
Frenchy’s Faux-Beard (12:51 pm): “not a fan of bbq?”
Ahhh, my gripin’ was mostly directed at the public tongue-lolling session of last blog. A virtual circle jerk, as it were.
Don’t mind me — I’m a little crotchety this morning.
That was a nice one too, DukeBoy.
March 20th, 20091:08 pm
ok that’s two flyball outs to the first two batters. last time i saw him pitch, there was nothing out of the infield. i can see he’s getting slack here…
You guys forgot never to ask a woman her age and I bet Carroll isnt a day over 29
March 20th, 20091:09 pm
flange, what would you think about extending the all-star break and playing half of the wbc during spring training and the other half during the allstar break?
Hermida single sharply up the middle.
duke is garbage. bunch of pansy crackers taking charges the whole game. that’s why either texas or nova puts the hurt on ‘em
March 20th, 20091:10 pm
Cantu sends 0-2 pitch softly to left field for a base hit, runners first and second, two out
March 20th, 20091:11 pm
anyone know if the game is on tv today?
March 20th, 20091:12 pm
So what’s it gonna be Random, tomato, vinegar or mustard??
March 20th, 20091:13 pm
Duke is not garbage…C’mon D. Lowe!!!
Such a typical complaint. Duke has no excuse not to be in the elite eight, because they are simply better than any of the teams they would face through then.
Just wanted you to know that Coach K took “pansy crackers taking charges the whole game” 101 at West Point. Under Bobby Knight.
po' lil' frenchy
if the game was on tv today i would do a back flip out of this chair
Cody Ross just sent a 1-2 pitch off the left center field wall for a two-run double. it’s 2-0 Marlins, all with two outs. Lowe ended it by getting Coghlan to hit a comebacker.
Carroll Rogers (1:06 pm): “”Marlins skipper Gonzalez has a rule that all his players be out in front of the dugout during the national anthem. …guess you kinda wish guys would do it on their own.”
Yeah, let’s militarize the whole dam civil society.
duke is garbage. bunch of over-rated softy jive turkeys
March 20th, 20091:14 pm
uh oh, typical d-lowe form, struggling in the first. but watch him get out of it with a run or less earned.
March 20th, 20091:15 pm
Carroll– Welcome back. Did you see this article in The New Republic by a Duke supporter regarding the various pitchfork attitudes out there toward the Blue Devils– http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=77950f2b-9680-4f0a-9de4-0e26a61316b4
While I am an Emory grad, I enjoy Duke Forest and have taught ESL to visiting scholars on campus, so I generally am supportive and wish the best for the team, even though I find Coach K rather detestable in his political attacks on the President. Not surprising though when you consider his Bobby Knight roots.
how can you get out of something with a run or less earned?
March 20th, 20091:16 pm
Frenchy’s Faux-Beard (1:12 pm): “So what’s it gonna be, tomato, vinegar or mustard??”
All sauce is optional, and should be superfluous — sauce on the side, if you please.
Hey Random, it’s better than what that jackbag Delgado did………..
i was hoping he might strike out the last guy or something like that, and not let in any runs…
