In regard to trading newly signed free agents, here’s a clue from Baseball Prospectus’ John Perrotto:

The Yankees have some interest in trading for Dodgers infielder Mark Loretta to fill in at third base while Alex Rodriguez recovers from hip surgery, and he would then serve as a utility player thereafter. Loretta would need to approve the trade, since he had signed as a free agent in the offseason. …

MLB.com

The union has been very reluctant to allow this in previous years, but with type-A FAs still out there they are contemplating it per this article. I’m not sure that the teams would be willing to go to all that trouble for these guys. And really how much difference is there between having to give up a draft pick and having to trade someone away?

A rule that is part of the Basic Agreement could be utilized so that some of the remaining Type A free agents on the market can join new teams without draft-pick compensation going to their old teams, a top Major League Baseball official told MLB.com on Tuesday.

The sign-and-trade rule allows a free agent to waive a no-trade period in the agreement if he consents to the deal in writing.

Thus, a Type A free agent could work out contract details with a new team but re-sign with his former team, which would then trade him to the other team in question.

There are four unsigned Type A free agents: pitcher Juan Cruz, second baseman Orlando Hudson, shortstop Orlando Cabrera and left-fielder Manny Ramirez.

Teams can’t normally trade a newly signed free agent until after June 15 of the following season, unless the player gives written consent.

“We do think it’s possible to effectuate a sign-and-trade consistent with the Basic Agreement,” said Rob Manfred, MLB’s executive vice president of labor relations and human resources. “The player would have to give an advance waiver of the right not to be traded.

“The union has been reluctant to do this in the past, but indicated some willingness to allow it here. So it is possible to pull off a sign-and-trade.”

DOB, that guy Veras for Cuba, when he dropped that little slider in side-arm…just damn. There are a lot of elements that (for me)make the WBC entertaining- watching the ridiculously good Japanese pitching staff, for example.

The Other thing is watching these Cubans like Veras and (last night’s starter) Chapman pitch- I’m convinced either one of them could be successful in MLB. Those cats get $500 dollars a MONTH! (and how about that Cuban catcher, with the constant histrionics).

Random, a sign-and-trade in baseball? These are strange days.

Coach (Skip and Pete will be missed), I like the kids the Marlins have there. I do. But if you’re saying the Marlins are more likely to win the division than Atlanta… I’ll take that bet. Name the terms.

The Braves pitching is stacked, both in the rotation and in the bullpen. And the offense is likely to be significantly better than many people think. We don’t have an 40 homerun guy, but we have quality professional hitters all the way up and down the lineup. Offense will be good enough when coupled with the kind of pitching quality and depth the Braves now have.

Campillo got lit up in the 5th tonight. Folks, It’s the 5th and 6th innings that are telling for a starter. Campillo is a good long relief guy but really no more than a number 5 guy in a rotation. I look for the Braves to start him at Gwinnette this year if he is not traded to a team like the Nationals.

I think in the next couple of years we will see a change take place in relation to the ability of Cuban born baseball players to sign MLB contracts and play in the US. There is just too much money being left on the table for it not to happen.

Coach (Skip and Pete wil be missed)

KC, that’s not what I said. not even close.

If the Mets and Phillies rotations both stay healthy, they are still the favorites to win the division and wild card.

If not, then the Marlins are the dark horse in a four team race. It wasn’t the Marlins pitching or offense that kept them out of the playoffs last year. It was their putrid defense. If they drastically improve at catching the ball, they just could be this seasons version of the Tampa Rays.

I’m not sold on the Braves pitching as of yet. Probably because I hold my own team under the microscope just a little longer while dissecting the strengths and weaknesses it has.

So far in spring training, the pitching has held up. Knock on wood because we all know spring training doesn’t mean diddly.

The outfield is still one hell of a mess. Matt Diaz has answered the bell and he is slated for the bench. Jordan Schafer is gunning for the CF job but are the Braves willing to play him over Josh Anderson? Garrett Anderson is missing in action. Jeff Francoeur is still trying to find his new swing. His .333 BA is respectable but Frenchy still doesn’t have one single extra base hit. Brandon Jones has impressed but I don’t think the Braves have any plans to keep him in Atlanta. Gregor Blanco had his chance last season.

Chipper Jones and Garrett Anderson are about as injury prone as two 37 year old veterans can be. Both are clutch, big time bats when in the line up and that is the problem isn’t it?

The catching corp. and bench are good to go. No problems here.

Our offense? Um, this is the big pink Elephant in the room. Can the Braves drastically improve on the worst offensive showing in the last twenty years of Braves baseball.

Believe it or not, the defense was middle of the road last season. It had much to do with the 93 different line up’s that Bobby Cox was forced to use. No cohesiveness, no consistency, no regular line up and injury were all contributing factors.

As for Bobby Cox. I love the man. He’s a first ballot slam dunk Hall of Fame inductee. But quit simply, as of right now I have absolutely ZERO confidence in the man’s in game management ability. NONE and Cox is the man whom I believe will ultimately keep this talented team out of the playoffs.

Gil/Frankie, I also think McGyver could get it done with a poncho, a Led Zeplin 8 Track, and one strand of David Wright’s hair.

David Wright himself, of course, wouldn’t need the poncho or 8-track.

But that money has been “left” on the table” for decades, so what makes now any different? Why would you think the Cuban government would allow players to sign MLB contracts now and not before? As long as it’s a communist country, why would you think that government is going to allow its star players to go play in the U.S.? Like they would agree to go play in the majors and live a relatively dream-like existence here for six months and then go back to the island and give the government part of their salary or something?

Gil, I’m not saying it won’t happen at some point, that Cuban players are allowed to leave and sign MLB contracts. But I can’t see it happening as long as the same form of communist government continues to run the country.

As for Eastbound and Down, I’ve watched them all so far, and I think it’s just getting worse. It has it’s moments of hilarity, but overall it is just too stupid and juvenile to get into. i dont disagree with you, but do you really see that happening? with uggla, ramirez and cantu all in the infield? defense will continue to be a problem, their bullpen is a problem, their starting could be good, but not having a guy over 25 is not always a good thing, and their big offensive players are big strikeouts guys, prone to streaks, and they can be beat.

alot would have to go right for the marlins. to me, they are clearly the 4th best team in the division, so that alot of ground to make up, even if there are key injuries tot he mets and phils.

I would consider trading Campillo. He is productive and I like him, but at some point he is extra weight, we have plenty of pitching right now. I just don’t know what I would trade him for yet. the braves have some pretty good trade pieces, and i really think that eventually, we are going to part with some young pitching for a impact outfielder. weve got enough guys signed for the next couple of years and enough young talent to make a few guys expendable. im still expecting a trade, maybe this year, maybe next offseason, to bring in an outfielder who hits alot of homeruns, and itll probably be a guy with a short commitment, as to not block heyward…

cricket – Chapelli – yes I commented on him, I remember the day he dropped his dacks to adjust his protector and when he swiped at the female streaker, very funny

Bravofan – Have you not been reading KC’s posts? Apparently the Braves have no competition!

DOB, aside from Josh Anderson, who would you say would be likely to make the big league club among the youngsters?

DOB, what does the rotation look like for the rest of the week? Headed from Augusta to Orlando on Thurday to catch three games.

Bravosfan – KC is to this Braves blog what Richard Simmons is to aerobics.

Hope that helps.

Ease 19 – Actually I meant overly bubbly, upbeat and the head cheerleader no matter the situation. Welded on rose colored glasses. Hey, who am I to talk? – I spend all this time on a Braves blog. Not exactly normal.

KC’s a good fan- What’s better than that?

A happy St. Patrick’s Day to you and yours, and a glass of Jameson raised in your honor.

DOB – Could you do some analysis and explanation concerning the lack of radio broadcasts in spring training? Needless to say perhaps, but without TBS broadcasts and no Sports South this far north, the need for radio is absolute. The MLB Internet broadcasts are great. Just drag my laptop to wherever I’m at and bingo, Braves baseball. Same with XM in my car. But there has to be a broadcast in the first place, no? Looking at today’s listing on MLB, every game has some sort of broadcast except Arizona and the Braves. Is the implication that Arizona and Atlanta have the least fan base interested? I think not. I know not. Thanks to TBS all those years and a lot of winning, I would guess the Braves still have a top 5 fan base ready to listen. Is some decision maker deliberately trying to kill the brand? Thanks, and, BTW, your blog is the best.
