Anders-My wife is at Vermont Law School (private school)-not UVM (state school).
All educational institutions up here are experiencing Fiscal Strain-it comes from the fact that most school’s endowments are heavily invested in the stock market and have experienced the same losses as everyone else. It is also making for problems dealing with development as the usual suspects who donate to colleges are losing their share in the market as well.
We’ve been lucky so far-no layoffs or firings, though measures such as furloughs or no (or reduced) contributions to retirement plans have been discussed. Dartmouth, OTOH, has had hiring freezes, furloughs and some layoffs. Some of the smaller colleges are having issues as well. Most of the more expensive schools are experiencing a decline in applications, but other numbers such as deposits received and the like are remaining steady. Could be much worse. At least there is still financial aid money available.
VLS is focused on Environmental Law. If the Obama green energy initiatives DO get instituted, that should be a boost for us-not only in the Law School side of things, but for their Master of Environmental Science program, as well.

Dogsbrekky – I tried to read your cricket post but must say it was like a foreign language to me so I gave up. My ignorance. That said, just seeing that a Cricket team needed armed guards, that ended up being killed themselves last week kind of turned me off to the sport.

dogsbrekky has already explained but I would like to add to the discussion of american sports viewing compared to others. As far as cricket is concerned, this English sport now really belongs to Australia and Indian sub-continent (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, to a lesser degree). Compared to baseball (mind you, I love baseball and watch most of Braves games), cricket has more variety, more action and is a much more spectator friendly sport. And in India, it is the only sport for billion+ people, so you can imagine the passion. Watching cricket in India is very exuberant, festive experience and though fans are passionate, there is none of the violence that is so prevalent in soccer.
As dogs pointed out, Pakistan thing had nothing to do with cricket. It was just the terrorists attacking last vestige of solitude for the Pakistani people.
To support your point, I was always amazed at the pro (and college) sports scenario in US that gives outlet to so many sportsmen and provides passionate outlets to so many fans (major sports pretty much cover the year) without pretty much lack of violence from fans.
PTBNL, imagine that trip back to the hotel on the Number 7 train…And that poor fella that cost the Cubs a World Series appearance, I think he went into witness protection. Civilized? Maybe, but definitely not sane. I won’t even bring up Steeler fans…

Yes, tests seem to be doing fine now.
You should have seen last two one-dayers between IND-NZ to see the most audacious batting displays. Tendulkar came close to hitting 1st one-day double hundred on one match while Sehwag blasted 100/60 in another.
Cricket – Thanks for the feedback. I’m sure if I lived in a country that played it I would be as passionate about it as I am with baseball.
Ease 19 – You may take some ribbing for Braves stuff at Mets games but I’ve never seen violence related to other teams apparell etc.. You do see it at NY NFL games which has a gang mentalitiy to it already. I refuse to attend.
As for the number 7 train. Don’t follow Rocker down that path. The people on their may look varied but their predisposition to violence or anger etc is no different than anywhere else in the country. Remember, Rockers view was his view, not the view of those he was criticizing. It showed where his heart was.
Whoever makes that 50th post on page 1 of this blog is temporarily legendary. You see it so many times. I just hope I don’t end up saying something stupid on there some day.
Its okay Anders, my g/f was born in Forrest Hills and has been in the city for 30 years but the great thing about USA and Australia, UK etc is our diversity of nationalities. Mr Rocker was showing such beautiful ignorance and arrogance that he made everyone cringe…… here I get to talk cricket with every 2nd cabbie cause they are Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Indian… a wonderful city this because of our differing cultures….
except METS suck and Yankess fans suck…….. my g/f being the latter only at play off time (Chardonnay set)
Anders – I think that any city that has a rapid transit system, has their own equivalent of the “Number 7″ train (the myth, the legend, etc). Some things are just better left unsaid, and Rocker was absolutely wrong to say those things, but we can all laugh at Rocker now can’t we?
A Met jersey in Atl would not amount to that much since we are such a passive city, but I get what you are saying…baseball is much, much tamer than most other sports. However, I would not mess with Eagles fans either, afterall, old Veteran’s had a brig in the basement.
Lew- Thanks for the feedback on the school stuff. Glad to hear you’re not too affected by what’s happening in that arena. I’m hearing in NY State schools and community colleges are receiving record applications with some getting ready to close out enrollment for the first time. This will put an unplanned strain on state and local budgets since they bore some of the costs at these institutions. Another shift in cost from the private to the public sector.
Anyway, that’s not what we’re here for. Back to baseball.
Good to see Diory Hernandez getting an earlier look as well. With all the talk of the future, there has been little mention of who will play third when Chipper either hangs them up or is injured for any legth of time.
ease19With all the talk of the future, there has been little mention of who will play third when Chipper either hangs them up or is injured for any legth of time.
there has been a little talk about guys like brandon hicks, but the main reason we arent talking about it much is because we have two reliable backups for this year, prado and infante, and chipper hopefully will soon sign an extension that will keep him here at least another 3, but maybe 4 more years (including this year). so, there really isnt any need to talk about a replacement much. just backups, which we are covered on.
In this year’s Rule 4 draft, I’m sure Frank Wren will focus on taking the most talented high-school players on the left end of the defensive spectrum (SS, 3B, 2B, CF) in hopes of finding a replacement for Chipper. I don’t like his high-school pitchers from the south strategy for the 2009 draft, though I like it in general.
DOB someone gave you the wrong name at 3B.
Phillies
1. Jason Donald , 3B
2. Bruntlett, SS
3. R. Ibanez, LF
4. Howard, 1B
5. Werth, CF
6. Mayberry, RF
7. Giles, 2B
8. Ruiz, C
9. Kyle Kendrick, RHP
DAP – I just did not like the idea of having to use our backup utlility guys last year as everyday players, which is why I bring it up. Of course we all hope that Chipper will sign an extension but can he stay healthy? I think that consensus on the blog is to expect 110-120 games out of him each year. Prado could turn into an everyday player, especially at 3B but I think that Infante is best used as a plug in guy. Hicks and Conrad both strike out too much and Diorys I know is still a few years away. But I still like that he is being given some quality looks with Chipper away on business.
Lew – and private institutions continue to raise tuition as well. Traditionally, the private sector has held itself to higher standards, but that is no longer the case in much of the country. So if you can now get a similar education at a lower cost, why not?
If Jo-Jo keeps pitching well, is it a foregone conclusion that he will be the #5 starter if Glavine isn’t ready to go? Seems like it, but just wondering what you guys think.
Good to see Diory Hernandez getting an earlier look as well. With all the talk of the future, there has been little mention of who will play third when Chipper either hangs them up or is injured for any legth of time.
It won’t be Diory Hernandez, LOL. An “organization guy” all the way. And I’m still trying to figure out how Brandon Hicks made any list of “top prospects”. I must have seen him play only on his bad days, I guess.
In any event, the Braves can always trade from strength to find a viable 3B prospect or two, if they feel the need. A farm’s positional weakness is always overblown.
Bill: It’s hard to guess what Bobby would do in the situation. He could use Campillo, Buddy, or Jeff Bennett in that role, and let Jo-Jo get settled in at Gwinnett
“In this year’s Rule 4 draft, I’m sure Frank Wren will focus on taking the most talented high-school players on the left end of the defensive spectrum (SS, 3B, 2B, CF)”
PWHjort, only time I can remember the Braves drafting “for need” was Devine (2005?). I think the Braves will draft the best available. And pitching is the currency of baseball, IMO. Stock the minors with enough good pitching prospects and you can pretty much obtain whatever you need.
Not to say they wouldn’t draft an Evan Longoria type if he’s out there at #7, but from what I’ve read, there are no such 3B prospects in ‘09. Without really knowing the prospects, I’d bet we draft pitching with our first pick. (and I sure don’t see us making any special effort to draft a CF or SS).
Jo-Jo is some kind of anomaly. It seemed like last year he would have 4-5 good innings a game…and one nightmare inning usually around the 4th,5th,6th inning. I wonder if he just hasnt been allowed to get to the nightmare inning yet…because of only pitching 2-3 innings so far in spring training.

Bill, I think that is a logical assumption, but you will find alot of people making a case for Hanson

Bill: It’s hard to guess what Bobby would do in the situation. He could use Campillo, Buddy, or Jeff Bennett in that role, and let Jo-Jo get settled in at Gwinnett

Lew – I know. That was my point. But in the end they are taxpayer funded to some extent so the cost is being shifted to the masses.

I wonder if he just hasnt been allowed to get to the nightmare inning yet…because of only pitching 2-3 innings so far in spring training.

spotts,
you beat me to it at 12:03.
Pretty soon, we’ll be having people link their blogs, or advertisements for their grandma’s knitted knick-knacks in that spot.
Honestly, I think I may just avoid posting on page 1 from now on.
