Anders and your 9″23
I agree with what you’re saying but both of Pedro’s outings have come against the Netherlands. I haven’t been on here bragging about the Braves success in ST for that very reason. But if that’s the way you meant it then I will say that I would rather us beat up on inferior competition than look terrible against it. It’s a lose lose situation because if you do well, it was against nobody and if you do poorly, it was against nobody. That is the same reason I haven’t looked at any of the Mets offensive numbers. I have mainly been trying to see how their pitchers are doing and it has still been a mixed bag. For example, I know Maine gave up 5 today to the Nats with 2 dingers. But it is just ST and health is the main thing that matters. I’m just not sure Pedro is any different than the guy he was last year who you couldn’t really count on for either health or success.
March 10th, 20099:35 pm
Why do I care about Pedro? Well, I care about him mainly because I actually like him. He is (was?) a great pitcher, a great personality & I have always enjoyed watching him pitch…but mainly it is just good baseball and nobody gave the Dutch a chance to beat the DR once, let alone twice…I am simply enjoying the game and he was strong for 3 innings…he looks good this spring- nice to see after so many problems. I don’t care who he signs with (especially the mets-sorry anders)- but like isaid, i like the guy, nothing more.
March 10th, 20099:37 pm
Lew- the Mets released Duaner sanchez today saving about $1.2 mil. If they release Garcia that’s another $8 mil. I believe that would more than cover pedro if they think he’s worth it. I was kidding about the antenna.
I have a question outside of baseball for you. I think you said your wife is the dean of admissions at U. of Vermont? If I have that right can you share how this bad economy is affecting them? More and more kids down this way are staying local because of tight credit and parents not having the money. share what you can – just interested.
Hey Boyd just hit Tejada. I’m sure that makes Boyd a made man in the Netherlands!
March 10th, 20099:41 pm
Cano is screaming about that ridiculously deep wall in right. That’s two balls that would be out of the house that Ruth built. That place is a joke.
March 10th, 20099:43 pm
I sat directly behind the Astro’s bullpen at today’s game and chatted and joked briefly with Burt Hooten (AAA Pitching Coach) and Geoff Geary. Can it really be 28 years since Hooten was the hot prospect out of U Texas drafted by the Cubbies at #2? Geary and catcher Umberto Quintero were especially good sports grabbing some foul grounders and making sure that children received them.
While Houston does not seem to have much pitching talent outside of Oswalt and Valverde, they were truly a credit to their organization. Quintero gave an elderly lady a towel to sit on. She bought him a Coke . . . could have been a commercial.
Saw old Braves Chad Paronto (lost a bit of weight) and Jose Capellan on the pines (well aluminum).
i just found out i get the MLB network. just in time to see the bottom of the 10th…
March 10th, 20099:44 pm
Oops, try 38 years for Hooten 1971.
March 10th, 20099:45 pm
Anders – is he (Cano) seriously whining about the fence ? wtf
If he is such a little bitch he should play soccer for Juventus, they had 3 dives in the first 20 minutes……..
Braves Fan 88 ,
I totally got your point in your original message, and agreed with the majority.
That said, man up and let it go. If you believe strongly in your original opine, there’s no reason to keep defending your point that most everyone here disagrees with.
Yes, you do come across as whiney after the multitude of times you’ve replied and argued that it just isn’t so along with complete supporting arguments on just why exactly you can’t possibly be whiney.
I’m sure there’s some parable, song, or fable about just moving on.
March 10th, 20099:46 pm
That chemistry stat was a hyperbole, Anders! You keep talking about the last two or three years, but your Mets have been alsmost as unimpressive, if you ask me. Yoiude…excuse me, I just ChOkEd on a piece of pizza. Sorry about that.
Dogsbrekky – No, that’s my twisted Yankee hating, sick of 311 foot HR’s mind at work.
March 10th, 20099:48 pm
Bobby Cox- That blur in your rear view mirror? Those are ESPN baseball highlights. You’ll never go there again. Welcome to nirvana for baseball fans.
March 10th, 20099:50 pm
311 feet that may actually be closer to 296 feet, truth be told. It is rather disgusting, is it not?
Would someone alert the AJC that we need a code breaker for TnBrian’s posts. Stat!
Anders I just call them the “Chardonnay Set”
March 10th, 20099:51 pm
I was more concerned with Hanson’s last start, where he was overthrowing his fastball. For a kid that’s supposed to have his head on straight, that worried me a little.
And, I wasn’t even that worried. If the rest of his “stuff” can bail him out when he’s not on with one of his pitches, then that’s pretty amazing for a pitcher his age.
He’s going to be good. Not sure what all the fuss is about ‘88.
Glad to also see that he’s throwing at some hitters when EVERY pitcher on the club last year failed to protect their hitters.
March 10th, 20099:52 pm
Whin, whin, whin… That’s all you do…
March 10th, 20099:54 pm
Anyone have a good site to pull up spring training stats for the Braves? MLB.com isn’t sortable by team.
I was getting sick of 24 hr. football coverage and analysis, and 5 second mid-season baseball highlights that were surprisingly aired instead of steroids coverage.
Pretty soon we’re gonna have Timberlake at the ESPY’s complaing that he thought ESPN was a sports network, not a reality TV channel.
March 10th, 20099:56 pm
This is mlb, just the braves:
Nelson Cruz looks like the most comfortable hitter in the D.R.’s lineup. Not sure why Alou has him hitting 8th. Seems like he’s more balanced at the plate and seeing pitches better than other DR hitters.
Bobby’s Cox: I hate the blue uniforms from last year. They were an insult to the baseball gods. When you win your division 14 times in a row in the same uniform, you don’t change it. This is why the Yanks don’t play in solid black or some other trendy BS. And don’t mention the powder blue unis to any Braves fan who suffered through the 70s and 80s. I’d rather see the team play in pink leotards than resurrect those hideous things.
March 10th, 20099:58 pm
the girlfriend is gonna be on Timberlake’s new reality TV show (yes, on MTV).
Looks like a damn good show. Youtube “the Phone, timberlake” and see the trailer.

March 10th, 200910:00 pm
Cadagan ..there’s no reason for anyone else to keep it going either..an honest person would have admitted that. And I don’t care how I come across. This isn’t high school, I don’t desire to be popular. And in my opinion, it’s you who can’t let go of this who are the whiners. I’ve tried to move on. Don’t blame me for responding to something others brought up in the first place.Your fake concern isn’t touching.
March 10th, 200910:02 pm
Jim Kaat regarding the DR’s celebration after finally scoring a run. “They’re all excited. They should probably be relieved.” That’s why I love this guy. He said a mouthful in 8 respectful words. I wish he would come out of retirement fulltime.
it wasn’t fake concern. no one deserves ulcers from a message board.
March 10th, 200910:06 pm
no one deserves ulcers from a message board (Cadagan)
Wait, are you saying I’m the only one with these stomach issues?
March 10th, 200910:07 pm
You gotta do what you gotta do to raise retail sales. When people stop going to games because said team won 14 years in a row, well, you gotta do other things to raise revenues. Other teams were doing it with alternative jerseys, so why not us? It’s not like it’s something new to the organization. The team went as far as changing their name before. Now that would be an insult to the baseball gods.
I think the blues look really good on TV, better than the greys. They should look really good with the all blue helmets.
March 10th, 200910:08 pm
Derek Lowe looked like he was pitching to high school kids, today. Only Lance Berkman even challenged him. Very methodical and no nonsense with Mr. Lowe. Loved it. He can be a very good example for young Jair Jurrjens.
Houston is going to have a very bad ballclub in 2009. I think we will see Cecil Cooper take the fall by the All Star break, although I am not sure what he is supposed to do with no talent.
Soriano looked like his old tough guy self. Had the game face on and brought it.
Good at bats by most everyone, but especially KJ, Kotchman, Norton, Diaz and Frenchy. The ball that Lowe stroked (as Caroll mentioned) was very deep ~390-395 to left center (power alley is 390 and CF 408)–he just missed it off the starter Moeller.
Looks like Matty Diaz may really be back to his 06 and 07 form with solid strokes.
Houston’s defense was porous with Hunter Pence make a couple bad plays in RF (I thought he was a good fielder) and Michael Bourne losing one to dead CF in the sun for a double.
What a nice experience at Kissimee vs Dark Star. It was actually quite between innings and during the first couple of innings you could hear the homeplate umpire making his calls all the way to my seats behind 3b in shallow LF. Almost like watching a real baseball game, before all of the showbiz nonsense.
What happened to J.R. Towles, the Astros catcher. Thought he was the next great thing and the Astro fans said he just sucks hitting and behind the plate. We may really see Houston sign I-Rod to tide them over.
Doug Brocail seems like the father of the bullpen as the senior guy. Very professional and still nasty stuff. The guys were very respectful to him.
Now the guy who blew the play in the top of the 9th is up with a man on 3rd. Is this an after school special?
March 10th, 200910:09 pm
game is getting interesting. Marmol is reaching back….
Honkbal Hoofdklasse, catch it!
What a game.
March 10th, 200910:10 pm
Greg, I agree on uniforms. Why change after 14 years winning with the same ones. I didn’t like the Blue and hate the Red.
March 10th, 200910:11 pm
Anders, ain’t that the truth (about a codebreaker for my man’s posts … wow, glad it’s not just me scratching my head, wondering if I missed some inside joke the past week or something).
BubDylan, you are a freakin’ funny dude.
“Braves Fan 88″ Just show us on the doll where you uncle touched you. Then we can make it all better.
this is a great game. Can’t believe Marmol didn’t try and throw kingsdale a slider.
Can’t believe the Netherlands is hitting Marmol!
wow, error by Marmol…. A D.R. disaster waiting to happen. WInning run on 3rd, 1 out.
Anders, you’re about to get your wish about getting your players back.
OK – Now it’s a Disney version. They’ve got Speilberg on retainer. Should be here in a pitch or two.
BTW- Why not walk a guy and play for two?
March 10th, 200910:12 pm
Ooops. Didn’t realize it was Marmol in all my wise guyness. Red faced a bit.
March 10th, 200910:13 pm
I guess that’s why.
March 10th, 200910:14 pm
The outfield fense swings open and here comes A-Rod with his hip wrapped to take the mound for the DR.
Only in a Spielberg epic!
March 10th, 200910:17 pm
Do you believe in Miracles? YES!!!!
Holy f’ing hell the Dutch just beat the DR!!!
Bill in VA
March 10th, 200910:18 pm
March 10th, 200910:19 pm
i guess any team with A-rod on its roster is bound to lose….
good news for the US.
March 10th, 200910:20 pm
this calls for a new page!
OK – So how does this help the MLB again? We now found out that Holland can beat the hot bed of baseball, the DR. So the new target market for Bud Selig is Holland?
I’m thinking he didn’t see THAT coming.
March 10th, 200910:21 pm
Bobby Cox – Very funny 10:19!
March 10th, 200910:23 pm
Looking at the spring training stats; Kotchman, Johnson and Escobar are having the best springs.
Prado (.190/.227/.238) and Francoeur (.150/.280/.150) are having the worst.
18 Wheels of Love
March 10th, 200910:24 pm
Could Andruw even make the Nederland’s team???
Magic 8 Ball says not bloody likely.
Dogsbrekky, your countryman Joel Parkinson just won the Quiksilver Pro on the Goldie just now…go celebrate.
I think Braves will be okay this season..however very little power expect Braves to have to do something about Frenchy’s lack of hitting…They have to do something..I kind of wish Braves hadnt signed garret anderson looks like another DL problem and God the Braves have the most DL players around..that and lack of power will do us in to a 3 rd or 4th placwe finish..I mean I think the team is good….but lacks…
March 10th, 200910:28 pm
Anders – You are the rare Mets fans here so your stomach issues are probably something related. I would recommend you see House…Congrats on getting your team back BTW
March 10th, 200910:33 pm
Ease 19 – I only got 2 back. There’s about 12 more to go. No lie.Met’s camp is a joke. Jose Valentin is playing everyday and batting like 4th.
Like I said days ago – I’m glad I didn’t pay to go down to their camp.
March 10th, 200910:34 pm
the Mets released Duaner sanchez today saving about $1.2 mil. If they release Garcia that’s another $8 mil. I believe that would more than cover pedro if they think he’s worth it. Anders
Unless there is a bonus in there for making the opening day roster, shouldn’t the mets be responsible for those salaries?
Hi guys, I’m quietly having a nice spring. Any chance if this continues and Francoeur keeps up his smooth .430 OPS this spring that I can win his job? I mean, he hasn’t exactly earned the starting right field job in the past.
No? Sells too many jerseys you say? Cox thinks of him as his son? Will give him more chances while rushing to ship new A’s closer Joey Devine out of town?
Sorry, my bad.
Seeing how my family is Dutch, it’s exciting to see them do so well in the WBC. But Team USA all the way.
Dan- I’m excited to see how the season fares for all those players you listed but especially Escobar. I have high hopes for him!
March 10th, 200910:35 pm
Tonight’s important talking point:
“Where were you during the Chinese invasion?”
March 10th, 200910:37 pm
Keylargo- Garcia’s contract was structured just that way so he is basically on a tryout. Similar to Glavine. Sanchez is like a 3 year guy so I don’t know exactly how the players rights work but I’m sure the Mets saved 75% of his $1.6 mil salary.
March 10th, 200910:40 pm
Did anybody just see that amazing groundout the Cubans just turned against Australia???
Did anyone just see the play the cubans just made….WOW
I Hate Geography
onight’s important talking point:
“Where were you during the Chinese invasion?”
In the Nederlands with Bill.
March 10th, 200910:41 pm

I guess it being so late and all Cuba decided they’d just wear their pajamas to the game?
March 10th, 200910:45 pm
Quite a difference than the last game. Heckuva play.
March 10th, 200910:46 pm
Could you imagine having season tickets next to the bugler? Holy crap.
March 10th, 200910:51 pm
let’s just be happy the Braves don’t wear jerseys like Cuba.
March 10th, 200910:52 pm
Anyway you could get Jurrjens reactions to the netherlands huge upset over the dominican republic in the WBC and if he regrets his decision not to be apart of it? Seems like he’d have something to say about it and could materalize into a story
March 10th, 200910:53 pm
I don’t want to alarm anyone but I swear I just saw Fredo and Johnny Ola in the stands rooting for Cuba.
March 10th, 200910:54 pm
Anders – I looked up Garcia’s salary and he gets $1.5 mm if he is added to the 40 man roster and the remaining $6.5 mm is for performance bonuses. So his base salary is probably the minimum.
March 10th, 200910:56 pm
Back off detroitchris. I’ll call the storyline shots and you just worry about what you’re gonna do with all them cars.
March 10th, 200910:58 pm
Keylargo – The Mets counted him as $8 mil against their stated $146 2009 salary budget. If he doesn’t make the club I believe all $8 mil comes off. At the very least $6.5 does.
March 10th, 200910:59 pm
If Cuban players were allowed to play in the Majors I have no doubt they’d be the best. The pitcher whose throwing today reaches 98-100mph.
I can’t believe Holanda(or the neatherlands) beat the Dominican Republic, it’s just unbelievable. Holanda has tremendous pitching, and they’re missing Jair Jurrjens and Shairon Martis.
The game they played against Puerto Rico whose playing at home was very impressive as well, I kinda of root for them to win the WBC.
DOB, I agree with you, why is South Africa in the WBC, and my country Colombia isn’t? I guarantee Colombia has a better team. I was told it was because Colombia didn’t have enough points in the Olympics to compete. Or is it because they couldn’t pay the fee to participate in the WBC?
March 10th, 200911:00 pm
How could Jurrjens have contributed to the D.R.?
Their problem was their lack of hitting and their defense, not their pitching. I’m sure he’s happy he didn’t play in the WBC now….
March 10th, 200911:02 pm
Bobby Cox. Juurgens would play for the Netherlands. I believe thats what detroit was talking about.
That Cuban pitcher reminds me of Dontrelle Willis…
March 10th, 200911:03 pm
foots in my mouth…
you’re right Anders.
March 10th, 200911:04 pm
By the way DOB, I saw that the Braves signed Ronald Luna, a
March 10th, 200911:05 pm
I was thinking the same thing about the pitcher. And the lefty hitting against him swung like eric Chavez. OK, might be time for some rest.
I’m actually beginning to humm along with the bugler. The guy played the theme from the Pink Panther. He also blares it just when the pitch is released by Cuba.
N Nine (eta26)
March 10th, 200911:08 pm
Been waiting for years in the making, but can you picture a healthy Moylan, Sorano, and then Gonzo? 7-8-9-gameover!!!
and oh I hear the starting pitching is better.
By the way DOB, I saw that the Braves signed Ronald Luna, a 16 year old SS from Colombia, his attributes are a powerfull arm, good glove, and a constant bat. They signed February 4th, with him and now Emiliano Fruto, and Julio Teheran the Braves have a total of 3 Colombians in their system that I know about.
How come Cuba’s mgr doesn’t have to wear the red pantaloones?
chicken - BALK!
March 10th, 200911:09 pm
sometimes pitchers are called for balks and I have no idea why.
that was not one of those moments.
March 10th, 200911:10 pm
Oh Yeah, The mets have been playing a 17 year old kid at short so I guess with Reyes now coming back they can send that kid back to high school.
Bay Area Steve
March 10th, 200911:18 pm
I feel for Willy Aybar. I think even Anders coulda had that ball.
Here’s to hoping he doesn’t fall off the wagon.
And what’s this talk of wine corks, first bottle or third?
March 10th, 200911:23 pm
Alberto Chapman, the Cuban pitcher is looking really really good. I mean he has Sabathia type stuff maybe even better, a little faster thats for sure.
March 10th, 200911:24 pm
Bay Area Steve – appreciate the confidence. Hey is that Bay a typo?
March 10th, 200911:26 pm
Hey, Anders, What’s up with Manuel saying we’re not signing Pedro. Did he leave on bad terms? I think he could help the Mets….
Andruw has posted a .308/.379/.500 line through eleven games this spring.
Glad to see it.
March 10th, 200911:27 pm
“The Cubans play fairly slow so we’re going to be here for a while. And their fans don’t mind.”
Perhaps this is because many don’t have electric or indoor plumbing. What’s the hurry to get home?
March 10th, 200911:28 pm
Now this pitcher is starting to throw like Willis.
March 10th, 200911:33 pm
N Nine – Covered that earlier. Manuel has to say that otherwise how does that look for the guys that are in cap now? It would be pretty disrespectful. Cox would say the same thing if Glavine wasn’t signed yet. It’s the politically correct thing to say. Not to mention he’d be putting Minaya in a tough spot if he said “Sure we really need him.”
There’s no bad blood between the two that I know about.
Hey did anyone see what happened with DR vs. Netherlands? Amazing – and no coverage here – a classic like the Russians vs. the Americans in hockey in the 80 Olympics. Why is there no coverage of this great story?
March 10th, 200911:34 pm
Wonder if the bugler knows any Tracey Chapman stuff? Kind of give the inning a theme.
March 10th, 200911:36 pm
Ross – We landed on the moon too. Now you’re all caught up.
March 10th, 200911:38 pm
Is Carroll Rogers hot? The blog has been wanting to know, and the team plays awfully well when she’s on duty. Kinda like they’re trying to impress.
In any event, I think the AJC should refrain from putting her pic up. I think inquiring minds do well for the blog. So I guess you shouldn’t answer the question then. Nevermind.
Wouldn’t it be something if the team lost tomorrow?
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
