Thanks, car3boogie on interesting comments about Lance Niekro.

cvbraves -- Forgot to mention, Guelph is a town in Ontario, Canada. This month Diamond is pitching for the Canada team in World Classic. I'd much rather he (and other Braves) be pitching in the ST camps where they could be better evaluated and coached. The wife and I have tickets for Braves/Marlins game next Friday and, unless team USA is eliminated quickly, we won't get to see Chipper and Mac.

I think we are being too hard on the union reps here! The job of a union rep is to represent the players interest at the time! We have to compare it to the role of a lawyer. A lawyer's job is to represent their client to the best of their ability. It doesn't matter whether the lawyer knows the client is guilty, or whether the lawyer morally disagrees with the client's behaviour, or whether the lawyer wants to change the rules of the law. In the case of the union rep, it is their job to protect the interests of the players and part of this role is confidentiality. The head of the union is not there to pass moral judgements on the player's behaviour or even change the parameters of the game. Tom Glavine , I think did his best to represent the players within the confines of the collective agreement at the time. It is obvious that everyone benefited financially from the increased used of PEDs, and the agreements in place at the time allowed for their continued abuse. I don't think a player rep had the authority or the desire to butt heads with the billionaires of the time, or to single out individual users, and compromise their privacy rights to change behaviour that they may have viewed to be morally reprehensible or damaging to the game at the time. These changes were the reponsibilty
of those in control at the time. The management of the game is in the hands of the owners and managers. They are the ones that have the right to manage under the law. If they chose to neglect that legal right, for financial gain, or didn't have the concrete evidence to carry out that right then so be it! It is not the reponsibilty of the players union to damage the credibilty of their own players, or present incrimnating evidence against them. If this was the role of lawyers and union reps, our legal system would be in turmoil.

Marie, I'm too stressed about David Gilmour turning 63 today, or I'd cover the subject you want addressed. SIxty-three! Say it ain't so.

On a brighter note, Connie Britton (principal and coach's wife on Friday Night Lights) is 41. Niice....

T.O. and A-Rod: Karmic comeuppance?...

Recently purchase three CDs that will make the year-end best-of list: Van Morrison's live Astral Weeks (already discussed that here) and just-released albums by Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3 ("Goodnight Oslo," with Peter Buck, et al) and Neko Case ("Middle Cyclone"), which is every bit as outstanding as the cover that has her in a dress, crouched atop a muscle car with a sword in her hand. The new Morrissey and U2 CDs are very good, too, in my opinion....

OK, we turn it back over to Carroll for real baseball news. Gonna go enjoy the spring-training-like weather here in Atlanta on the bike....

hey marie antoinette...most of us read/post on the blogs because baseball is a glorious escape from the economic issues. we hear about it at work. we hear about it at home. we hear about it on the news. we hear about it when the bills come. We know how bad things are. we don't want to hear how bad things are with our baseball too.

Baseball is not only a sport. It's a way of life. this sport survived the Great Depression, and for many was the escape from the Depression. Watch Ken Burns' "Baseball" sometime. It will change your life.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we come here, and watch the game, to escape all the other garbage. For 3 hours (1.5 if Maddux is pitching and he's "on") nothing matters but the game. Please don't wave the giant "Economy" sign while we are all trying to escape.

cvbraves -- Thanks for the additional info on Scott Diamond. Big, lanky dude. Man, the Braves have a lot of young pitching talent these days. Can't have too much, as they say. Have to think '10 - '20 could/will be a seriously good era for our side. Is that too optimistic a take?
