Actually while I’m at it heres fangraphs entire braves projection.
1. Josh Anderson- .285 4HR 40 RBI 39SB
2. Yunel Escobar- .300 9HR 63 RBI
3. Chipper Jones- .315 23HR 82 RBI
4. Jeff Francoeur- .272 16HR 76 RBI
5. Brian McCann- .301 24HR 98 RBI
6. Garret Anderson- .282 16HR 83 RBI
7. Kelly Johnson- .284 15HR 67 RBI
8. Casey Kotchman- .282 14HR 78 RBI
1. Derek Lowe- 14- 9 3.60 ERA 208 IP 132 K
2. Javier Vazquez- 13-11 3.80ERA 214 IP 195K
3. Jair Jurrjens- 10-9 4.02 ERA 178 IP 132 K
4. Kenshin Kawakami- 8-6 3.88 ERA 123 IP 113 K
5. Tom Glavine- 8-8 4.23 ERA 139 IP 73 K
Anybody want to explain to me why:
A) mlb would have a link to listenting to gameday audio under the headline with the Braves game, yet NOT have it on gameday audio today. Essentially saying, “hey Braves fans. How about listening to another teams minor leaguers play some spring ball?”. Jerks.
B) I’ve re-upped my game day audio subscription, and CANNOT find a way to “bookmark” the game day audio “home” page. When you click on the link on the Braves page it takes you to the “sign up” or renew page, and wants credit card info. I’ve already given it to them. When you finally DO find the area in which you can choose your games, and try and bookmark it, it bookmarks THAT DAY on the calendar.
I realize I’m setting myself up for some slams here, but am I and idiot or what? It seems to me it was MUCH easier to deal with last year and the year before. Not to mention that MOST spring training games were on the radio last spring, in fact almost all of them were if memory serves me correctly. Got me through the day at work, and allowed me to “get to know” some of the kids before the season started.
I’m guessing Bud Selig is to blame. A-hole.
oh, apparently Jeff has a golf outing today with Tiger Woods and John Smoltz. Still seems odd to get only one at-bat, but I guess that was it
March 4th, 20091:33 pm
Ian Kennedy OUTRIGHT sucks……… so am gonna wait until they put a pitcher in there b4 I get
so we put our worst hitter in the cleanup spot?
Bobby wouldn’t pull FRENCHY after 1ab. Somethings wrong.
Dynamite reporting Carroll, you should ditch your post and join them.
Bravely going forward
March 4th, 20091:34 pm
hopefully jeff will be playing a lot of golf this season
Kawakami allowed a leadoff walk to Juan Miranda, but retired the side in order for a scoreless second inning. He buckled Angel Berroa with a 69 mph curve then came back with a fastball to strike him out.
Golf or your job? Hmmm… well, it IS Tiger.
March 4th, 20091:35 pm
Guess it is all about priorities with Jeff…who’s paying him the 3.xmillion…and what about the fans at Disney?
Not sure a former Nats employee should be using phrases like “throw the birth cerificate out the window” these days….
Random, I know, just giving him a hard time…
zephyr – I will take those stats as of today on the hitting, they are a bit -ve on the pitching side
March 4th, 20091:36 pm
cphizzle, good idea.
March 4th, 2009
again these are not my projections. I guess fangraphs did it to split up the lefties.
>bobby must have talked to Jeff321 and decided to take Francouer out immediately because of one pop up.
Or maybe Frenchy thought about getting shown up yet again by the young buck. I hear he has real fragile “feelings”, ya know!
Btw As I said before, Kotchman will lead the team in hits this year.
Kawakami’s got a bat???
Here is 川上’s Player Page on http://www.japanesebaseball.com.
378 Pas, 342 Abs, 55 Hs, 5 HRs,18 RBIs, 28 SacBunts, 0 SacFlies, 8 GIDPs, 139 Ks, 8 BBs, 0 SBs, .161/.180/.231
DOB (10:55 am): “Taylor, haven’t seen [Kawakami] hit yet, but I’m told he was an outstanding hitter in Japan. Don’t know if he has Mike Hampton-type power at the plate (doubtful), but those who’ve seen him say he can hit….”
Geez, I sure hope they’re not the same ones sayin he can pitch.
In 7 years (162 games, 378 PAs, 342 ABs), 川上 has achieved an AVG/OBP/SLG slashline of .161/.180/.231. For his career, Hampton boasts .241/.291/.352.
“outstanding hitter”, indeed.
川上 did have 28 sac bunts and only 8 GIDPs, but also only 8 BBs and 139 Ks. 5 HRs and 18 RBIs.
March 4th, 20091:38 pm
Has Frenchy swung at the first pitch EVERY at bat this spring? So much for trying new things. I want to love they guy but he drives me nuts!!!
Brandon Jones is in left
18 Wheels of Love
Maybe Tiger can give better hitting instructions than Ruday Jamarillo?
Look, it’s Tiger, I get it…but that’s lame. Maybe Wren can pull a quick deal for Nady and have him take Jeff’s spot on the bench?
Carroll – Were you serious about the golf game and Froggy ?
I could fly down and make it for Tiger….
then again I am retired and I DID NOT SUCK at my job last year
March 4th, 20091:39 pm
Jeff321 i now nominate you to go and give Frenchy a hug to console those fragile feelings
Even I will admit I find that a little odd. It hardly seems appropriate after Francoeur himself said he wanted to get as many ABs as possible in ST to work on his mechanics. What, the only tee time they could get was 2PM Wednesday, LOL? I’m pretty sure Tiger can get in the box just about any time he would like, on just about any course.
Except Augusta, natch. God Himself plays when they tell him, at Augusta.
March 4th, 20091:40 pm
Frenchy was just working on his golf swing…Hence the pop out…No worries!
Jeff321 – I have man love for you. I like Kotch as well, nice kid
DAP (1:05 pm): “hey man, its a ridiculous stab into thin air. thats all”
We’ll see — that’s the nature of predictions.
I will admit it’s based more on Abreu’s expected continued deterioration than any Pollyannish expectations of Anderson.
Kawakami popped out foul to third in his first at-bat. Ah well……Omar Infante led off the second with a double on a broken bat grounder past third.
March 4th, 20091:41 pm
Perhaps Jeff Francouer should focus on his baseball swing and not on a golf outing.
> B) I’ve re-upped my game day audio subscription, and CANNOT find a way to “bookmark” the game day audio “home” page. When you click on the link on the Braves page it takes you to the “sign up” or renew page, and wants credit card info.
Simply bookmark this page:
(This way it gives you the new games around 11am each day.)
Jeff will not be a Brave all season
Glavine will start the year on the DL
Hanson will start as the #5
Glavine won’t hit all his incentive clauses
In game two, Jeff took seven pitches in a row over the course of two at bats!
March 4th, 20091:43 pm
kawakami is drawing some “ooohs” from the crowd for his curveball. he just got ramiro pena to swing through one.
March 4th, 20091:44 pm
We will have a good bench this year… Ross, Norton, Infante. Solid.
Guess Omar was stranded at second in the second?
March 4th, 20091:45 pm
Kenny seems to be working it. Excited for the guy.
If Glavine is not ready for his first start do you think it will be Hanson, or does he start in AAA no matter what?
March 4th, 20091:46 pm
DWW – if no Glavine, we’ll use Campillo or Long Reliever IMO… once desperate, we may make a move then… would expect later in the season. My two cents.
March 4th, 20091:47 pm
I should add, you’ll need to edit an existing bookmark with the above address. Because it actually redirects to http://mlb.mlb.com/mediacenter/#20090304
And the number on the end is the date.. So, if you bookmark the “redirect” it will send you back to today — tomorrow.
DWW. My guess is if not Glavin, then Jo Jo. Hanson in AAA until June.
March 4th, 20091:48 pm
Carroll… where are we on the ‘ooooh’ count?
Art in TN
Let’s keep in mind, Ken’s throwing a lot of hammers out there at a time in spring training when lots of pitchers are just easing into their breaking stuff. Let’s temper our enthusiasm a little
Please someone tell me that is a joke about Franceour… A .230 batting average and trip to the minors last year does not give him an ‘idea’ that he needs every at bat possible. Or would it be the current .091 average he has in SPRING TRAINING agains MOSTLY MINOR LEAGUE pitching. Get him outta here. Id rather see a high school senior play Right Field.
March 4th, 20091:49 pm
kawakami just tried the curve 3-1 to johnny damon. didn’t work. walk. Two outs though.
I don’t see Jo-Jo breaking the rotation even with injury, and they don’t like him in the bullpen… we have better options than Jo-Jo at this point IMO.
ease19, I made an open offer to you and Lew to wager on our pre-season prognostications, and I thought you said you happy to take the bet. Must have misunderstood. =)
March 4th, 20091:50 pm
He probaly didn’t want to mess up his golf swing!
The Dodgers have agreed in principal on a two-year, $45 million deal to re-sign free agent left fielder Manny Ramirez, a baseball source told MLB.com on Wednesday morning
parenthesis around all that
Given the fact that he swings at anything at ankle height, maybe Jeff can improve his game with Tiger.
March 4th, 20091:51 pm
Carroll, I know I’m the 95th person to tell you this, but thanks for the updates throughout the game!
March 4th, 20091:53 pm
Frenchy only one at bat. I wonder if he’s been traded.
Apparently, from box score, after Omar’s double..Ross, KK, and Anderson went 1-2-3. Still 2-0, Braves.
March 4th, 20091:54 pm
Anyone have Frank Wren’s email
I am going to write to him about the golf and request that in future they make our lard ass RF actually do WHAT WE FANS pay him to do and that is HIT bloody MLB pitchers…. not play wannabe rock n rolla with Tiger
Thanks Jeff. I think what happened to me the other day when I bookmarked it the first time, was that it wasn’t on the “today” tab. Then, yesterday, when I clicked on the bookmark, it went to whatever day’s schedule it was on when I set the bookmark.
Good to know that they update the list of games around 11:00. I just remember last year, when you went to the Braves official site, and clicked on “listen live”, it took you right to that days schedule.
Anyhow. Thanks again.
Should we be ripping on Francour for getting in at least one at bat today? He could have just called in ’sick’ and taken the whole day off. Which is worse from a Fan’s perspective? I player who just totally blows off the day to play golf, or one says “Bobby, I can show up on time, give you one, maybe two at bats, but then I’d like the rest of the day off?”
I’m lost, you said Infante got a double, then talked about Kawakami’s curveball. Can you summarize that inning again?
was a big fan of Francuer, not anymore. Tired of no care attitude. come on Heyward
March 4th, 20091:55 pm
KC, just a misunderstanding…I wanted you to take Lew’s bet about it being 72 this weekend. I actually like your hypothetical numbers…(besides, don’t want to mess up your 10-2 record, 10-3 looks so much uglier)
I would love for someone to ask Cox the following:
“Since Frenchy is and has been struggling.. Do you think its a wise idea to go on a golf excursion instead of getting at bats?”
And of course the follow up bonus questions: “What kind of message does this send? Would you say Frenchy is or is not a team player?”
And lastly: “Do you think Frenchy gets special treatment? Why do you insist on rewarding failure?”
March 4th, 20091:56 pm
I wish someone would translate to Kawakami not to over expose his curveball this early in S.T. And i do seem to remember the Braves playing their hearts out this time last year in ST and slacking off a bit when the season started. I know, injuries stalled the whole season, but still.
Glavine seems to have a little chip on his shoulder when it comes to his spot in the rotation…i like it!
The worst hitting outfielder in the league takes off in the middle of a game to go play golf. Something wrong with that BC. And besides, Tiger has plenty of money already.
Great to hear that a guy like Jeff who is hitting .091 can quit early and work on his golf game.
ok, that’s back-to-back walks to Damon and Gardner and a passed ball charged to David Ross to move runners second and third.
2 Parc, just heard a third oooh.
And a nice dig by Omar Infante at third to get Kawakami out of the third inning. He allowed three walks but no hits in three scoreless innings.
March 4th, 20091:57 pm
Which one of these is playing golf today again ?
Atlanta AB R H RBI BB SO LOB AVG
Anderson, G, CF 2 1 1 0 0 0 1 .500
Escobar, SS 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 .429
Johnson, 2B 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 .400
Kotchman, 1B 1 0 1 2 0 0 0 .375
Francoeur, RF 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 .091
Jones, B, LF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .300
Heyward, LF-RF 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 .286
Infante, 3B 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 .444
Ross, C 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 .333
Which one stands out ?
ease19, LOL… yeah, 10-3 would be terrible.
Again though, feel free to join us for opening night, if you’re up for it.
March 4th, 20091:58 pm
Those questions don’t get asked, because they aren’t based in fact… they are based on conjecture and opinion… they may very well be true, but aren’t proven.
Were the dodgers bidding against themselves? I’ve got zero respect for a guy that fakes an injury on a team that provided him a world series victory – or any team for that matter.
March 4th, 20091:59 pm
DAP (1:25 pm): “weather he set out to get two pitchers over and above smoltz and glavine is moot. really, how many pitchers he set out to get at all is moot.
“the point is, he got 4 pitchers (lowe, vazquez, kawakami, and yes, glavine) and blocked the young guys from the rotation. he got one too many.”
No, it ain’t moot.
Given the above, how come you weren’t sayin “that’s too many SPs” four months ago, when Wren first announced his offseason intentions?????
Hindsight, baby — ain’t it great? Makes you look really smart, huh?
Fact is, the Braves do not have too many SPs, Wren did not acquire too many SPs in the offseason, and the Braves will be awfully glad they got all three of their offseason SP acquisitions. And Glavine. And they’ll wish they had kept Smoltz.
B:0 S:0 O:1 – Ramiro Pena grounds out, second baseman Kelly Johnson to first baseman Casey Kotchman.
B:0 S:3 O:2 – Ian Kennedy called out on strikes.
B:4 S:0 O:2 – Johnny Damon walks.
B:4 S:0 O:2 – Brett Gardner walks. Johnny Damon to 2nd.
B:1 S:0 O:2 – With Xavier Nady batting, passed ball by David Ross, Johnny Damon to 3rd. Brett Gardner to 2nd.
B:1 S:0 O:3 – Xavier Nady grounds out, third baseman Omar Infante to first baseman Casey Kotchman.
Frenchy shouldn’t be playing golf right now….golfing messes with your baseball swing. Golfing while trying to figure out your swing and implement a new approach against live pitching probably isn’t a good idea until the damn thing is enshrined in your muscle memory.
I don’t know if he is or isn’t, but if he is, i don’t think he should be.
I actually hope Jeff gets traded, but not because I don’t want him on the team, I just think no matter what he does, he’ll never get a fair shake from anyone in Atlanta anymore.
Everyone ripping him for popping out and then leaving the game, you have no idea what you’re talking about, yet because it’s Jeff you’re going to pile on.
It’s not fair to him at all, and I actually feel sorry for the guy at this point. He’s never going to win again, it’s never going to be a good environment in his home town, and I feel terrible that it’s gotten to this point.
March 4th, 20092:00 pm
Michel: Just trying to fill in the blank’s between’s Carroll’s posts, i.e., Omar double (blank) KK’s curve ball.
I agree, Frankie K – the Dodgers paid more than they had to.
hey seymour, where are you getting the play by play?
March 4th, 20092:01 pm
53 pitches for kawakami, 30 for strikes….
kelly tried to reach on a bunt. got throw out, but i like the play – practice that down here when the at-bats don’t count.
March 4th, 20092:02 pm
I haven’t seen anything as to where Frenchy definitely going to play golf, however, this is something he has done in the past. I would think he talked with the skipper about this and was probably told it was ok. Looking back, maybe Cox should have let him have the entire day off.
One thing I find positive about Francour thus far this year is that through about 15 at bats, he has not struck out. I believe Francour will have a good year…

Also like the KJ bunt attempt… with no one on base, why not?
Dear Mr Wren,
I am a lifelong Braves fan, all the way from Adelaide (that is in South Australia) and I spend over $1000 every year on Braves gear, tickets and such forth.
I am wondering why you are letting the worst expected starting OF in Major League Baseball to be taking rostered days off in spring training when said outfielder is hitting at a price lower than Citibank stock (that would be <<<<< $2).
Please be forwarding all of us lifelong fans a discount for putting up with this nonsense..
March 4th, 20092:03 pm
Caroll – can you give us Kenny’s line? Please include final ‘ooohs’.
guys, it’s spring training. Veterans (and yes, Francoeur is a vet) leave early all the time to go play golf. You think Chipper or Glavine or even McCann have never left a game before it was over to play? I know all the “yeah but Francoeur sucks” but changing your swing takes time- he’s not going to make adjustments and the next day be a .350 hitter…if he is still hitting poorly in June, I would worry…I am NOT going to worry about him hitting poorly (or well) in March
March 4th, 20092:04 pm
B:0 S:0 O:1 – Yunel Escobar flies out to right fielder Xavier Nady.
B:0 S:0 O:2 – Kelly Johnson grounds out softly, catcher Jose Molina to first baseman Juan Miranda.
B:0 S:0 O:3 – Casey Kotchman grounds out, shortstop Ramiro Pena to first baseman Juan Miranda.
Nice catch in center at the wall by Josh Anderson to take extra bases from Juan Miranda, the first batter faced by Blaine Boyer
I am more interested in helping Frency than beating him down. What could he do(no golfing, I know)to better his ab’s. We need this guy to succeed. Even if we did trade em , what could we get for a guy who can’t hit?
March 4th, 20092:05 pm
thank you Brian, you hit the nail right on the head. everyone is rippin him for this and for that so he dont even have a snowballs chance
Frenchy has had more than a fair shake. He’s been handed RF apparently until he just doesn’t show up for work one day. He was also just give 3+m for having the worst RF season in MLB. He also TWICE turned down a deal similar to McCann’s. TWICE.
And he ditches a game early during a pivotal spring traiing where he is retooling his swing. Maye he will be fine, I hope so, but to say he won’t be given a fair shake is bull hockey.
If I were GM, he’d be a Royal yesterday.
dogsbrekky, perhaps Jeff put in some extra time in the cages this morning? Leaving early probably cost him 1 or 2 at bats. Get over it.
March 4th, 20092:06 pm
dude – he should start with patience.
Clint Sammons just entered the game for Ross and gunned down Angel Berroa at second.
If Francoeur had not been in the lineup for one at bat and had taken the game off no one would be complaining. Francouer has played in more spring training games so far than most of our players. Lets give the guy a break. This is only Spring Training.
If he is as bad in April as he was last year I will give him hell. but I will wait until then.
March 4th, 20092:07 pm
Relax. Francouer swung at the first pitch he saw today only because he had to make a tee time.
KC: I’ll probably be at Frankies on the Prado sports bar on the north end of 285.
Unfortunately you wont be there; closed last year so dont waste a trip. Try Hudsons in Brookhaven, or Dantannas at Lenox. Am I invited? : )
maybe Francuer can take Tiger’s spot in the foursome and send Tiger to the stadium to play right field. tiger can not do any worse and probably do better.
What? Ross is taking a couple ST innings off?!?
March 4th, 20092:08 pm
scoreless inning for Boyer. saw 96 on the gun. gave up a sold single to Berroa but faced the minimum after Sammons’ throw
March 4th, 20092:09 pm
good one, thrillhouse44
Like Jeff and hope he does well, but look at all the guys dropping out of the WBC or not committing because they trying to make this team and other team. Acosta comes to mind, B.J. Ryan, Escobar, etc.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
