eltrompo: you saw Smoltz’s split, you don’t need to see a forkball. You’ll never see one nastier than Smoltz’s split when he used to dominate with that thing, when his arm could handle it.

I looked all over for some highlights of yesterdays game and found only ESPN’s version which highlights Roy Oswalt striking out Chipper twice. But the did mention the Braves coming back to win the game…WTF?!!! ESPN hates the Braves, if that isnt proof, i dont know what is.

KC- I’ve heard of it, I just don’t think I’ve ever seen one and known that it was a forkball. Whats the trajectory of one?

A forkball is like a splitter, but not as much velocity and more movement. You basically jam the ball as far as you can between your index and middle finger and throw it with your thumb on the bottom. If thrown perfectly it has a little spin and dances sort of like a knuckleball but drops right before it gets to the plate. It’s a standard pitch in a Japanese Starting Pitchers’ repertoire.

What’s the story with this Brooks Conrad fellow. I’ve seen him in a couple of games but I know nothing about him other than he’s a) a switch-hitting 2nd baseman and b) he was signed as a minor-league free agent by Oakland for 2008 and Atlanta for 2009 after failing to crack the Astros’ big club. Who is he competing with for what playing time at what position in what role?

Hanson looked good…he came in with the heart of the Astros order…walked.. Lee which was debatable…then hit Tejada…to get back for Escobar getting hit…then pitched pretty well…getting out of the jam…only giving up two runs. He looks scary on the mound. He is so big…I’m sure overwhelming for hitters…not to mention the 95-98mph fastball. I think he will be up with the Braves…sometime in the near future. They really dont need him starting off. Also…James Parr looked really good as well. Not sure if there is roster spot…but he could be a good 4th/5th starter in the future.

MF, I dont think that it would be an ideal defensive situation to have G. Anderson or Frenchy in center. Neither really have the range necessary. I’m sure if J. Anderson, Infante, and Prado all had been used, then it could possibly happen, but it’s probably safe to say that the Braves wouldn’t want either of them out in center. Heck, you might even want Diaz there before Frency or Garrett.
