Save on candy

If you’re not tired of looking at candy, today’s the day to check out after-Halloween candy sales for future children’s parties with piñatas, gifts of mugs filled with candy for hostess or teacher gifts, party favors, baking and more. Walgreens: Walgreens has Halloween candy deals, such as Hershey’s fun, miniature or snack-size candy bags (15.92- to 24.44-ounce sizes) at buy one, get one half off. Regularly $5.99, two bags would cost you $9. Use two of the $1 coupons from the Oct. 14 SmartSource circular on 22-ounce bags or larger to pay $7 at the register. You also will get 1,000 points in your Balance Rewards account, which is the equivalent of $1. Your net cost would be $3 per bag, or 50 percent off. Walgreens also has smaller bags of Hershey’s, Mars or Nestlé fun or snack-size candy bags (9.7- to 12.5-ounce sizes) on sale for $2.49. General Mills: Kroger has a fantastic promotion that gives you a coupon for $5 off your next shopping order when you buy five participating General Mills items. Many items are on sale and have coupons, so if you remember to use that $5 coupon on a future order, you’ll be able to get several free items and even make a “profit” in the form of store credit on some items. Remember, you won’t get the $5 off your current order, and you must buy five items for the machine to print your future order coupon. These are all excellent items to donate to charity, so you can stock up for upcoming food drives. For example, Betty Crocker boxed potatoes are on sale for $1 per box. If you use the coupon for 50 cents off two from the Oct. 7 General Mills circular or the Sept. 9 SmartSource circular, you’ll pay 50 cents per box at the register after Kroger doubles your coupon. I have a confession. My coupon situation needs help.

There are little piles of clipped coupons scattered all over the house instead of neatly filed away in a category coded binder. Just this past weekend, I missed out on an extra $5 off at Kroger because I left the coupon on the kitchen counter.

I have also been THAT person at the register who fumbles through her unorganized envelope of coupons searching for the right ones.

These are classic mistakes according to Stephanie Nelson aka Coupon Mom who also contributes to this blog.

Buying things you don’t need just because you have a coupon, not being organized (ahem!) and not paying attention at checkout because you are too busy shuffling through your unorganized coupons are bad habits that can reduce your savings, she says.

I should know better. I do know better. Even Coupon Mom thinks I’m pathetic. Okay, she didn’t say that, but she has heard the same excuse I gave her from just about everyone, “I’m too busy!”

Maybelline, GUM: Find many good store coupons and sale items for Publix in the “Score Big Savings” circular found in store flyer racks. You can combine Publix store coupons with manufacturers coupons for the same item. For example, the Publix flyer has a coupon for $2 off any Maybelline cosmetic. Combine that with $1 Maybelline coupons found in the Sept. 9 RedPlum circular to save $3 off per item. Publix has GUM Super Tip or Micro Tip toothbrushes on sale for $1 each in select stores. Kroger’s deals duo

These are the final days of Kroger’s Mega Promotion, which ends Saturday. When you buy 10 participating items, you automatically get $5 off your bill. Kraft has a Catalina promotion running at the same time, which gives you a coupon off your next order when you buy participating items. When you combine the two promotions at Kroger, you’ll hit the savings jackpot. For example, Kraft American cheese singles (12 ounce) are $1.49 after the mega promotion savings. If you buy 10 Kraft items, you’ll get a coupon for $10 off a future order, so your net cost will be 49 cents per package if you get 10 Kraft items. Some Kroger stores have a coupon box on the shelf with $1 off two coupons, which would make the cost of the cheese zero.

Store flyer guides you to coupons

Look for the “Sizzling Savings” flyer in Publix to save with store coupons. If there is a manufacturer’s coupon available for the same item, you can use both coupons on one product. For example, the flyer has a coupon for $2 off any two Scrubbing Bubbles products. Combine that coupon with a variety of Scrubbing Bubble item coupons found in the Aug. 26 and July 29 SmartSource circulars.

Also find a coupon for $1 off any Glade Plugins scented oil refill in the Publix flyer, and combine that with a $1 manufacturer’s coupon in the Aug. 26 SmartSource circular. Search Coupon Mom’s coupon database for more matches.
