Are you feeling a little whipsawed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday pulling your money every which way?
Well, this is no time to rest on your deal getting laurels. Today is the first annual #GivingTuesday and a collection of non-profits want you to engage in a little giving back.
I had no idea until yesterday that this mission to create a national day of giving during holiday season existed…but here’s the basic idea:
More than 2,000 #GivingTuesday partners from all 50 states are either registered 501(c)3 organizations with a specific #GivingTuesday initiative or for-profit businesses, schools, religious or community groups spearheading a project that will benefit at least one 501(c)3.
You can see all the partner organizations online and read about how they are participating in the event.
Then all you have to do is decide who and how you want to help.
Mashable recently featured six inspiring companies that have joined #GivingTuesday.
The list includes Sony which is giving $1 for every re-pin it gets on Pinterest between #GivingTuesday and the end of the year to the Michael Phelps Foundation towards the Boys and Girls.
A totally different initiative from Phoenix House treatment and recovery center asks friends and supporters to write letters of encouragement to the participants in its programs, many of whom have severed relationships with their own families during addiction and rarely get letters of encouragement from them.
The #GivingTuesday website also offers tips on how to get your family involved in the giving.
Some ideas include having a home treasure hunt and gathering up all the unused items you can find to donate to a charity that helps families get set up in new homes.
Or skip the extra food items for a week or two — the coffee, the after school treats, etc. — and donate the money to a local food pantry.
So really there are a lot of ways to participate in #GivingTuesday.
Maybe over the next few years, #GivingTuesday will give Gray Thursday a run for its money.
What do you think of #GivingTuesday? How are you participating?
