How much does your car really cost you?

We love to complain about the price of gas. It’s up, it’s down, it’s doing the hokey pokey.

But according to data from insurancequotes.org, fuel only amounts to a quarter of the money associated with car ownership. Click on the graphic to take a closer look:

The True Cost of Car Ownership

What drives your automobile costs up? Maintenance? Insurance?

Clark Howard: Ideas to lower your iPhone charges

Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardLove the iPhone but hate the high monthly cost of service? A couple of new options coming could save you money.

Months ago, I told you about a new start-up from one of the Skype founders called FreedomPop.com. FreedomPop is selling a $99 sleeve for the iPhone that’s due to ship later this summer. But this is no mere protective case for that kind of money.

A deal like this means you can reduce your data plan with your cellphone provider and save yourself a meaningful amount of money with your iPhone — unless you’re on Sprint, which has no data cap for now.

Meanwhile, …

Family dinner out

Finally, an affordable family date. OutToEatWithKids is an online database and mobile app featuring local restaurants with tons of free kids’ meals. Simply search by ZIP code and day of the week and a great selection appears. The best deals I found include Imperial Fez on Sundays (up to four kids 14 and younger eat free with the purchase of two adult entrees; above) and Westside Bar & Café on Wednesdays (kids eat free 5-8 p.m..) and Space Thursdays (kids younger than 7 eat free with an adult meal purchase 5-9 p.m.)

Multiply deals

Fashion Bug: Shopaholics like me go crazy for the term “BOGO” (buy one, get one), and this is cause for applause. Fashion Bug is taking the “BOGO” concept to a new level. Buy one, get one free on sleepwear, buy two, get two free on bras and buy three, get three free on panties. Stock up and save, your lingerie drawer will thank you. Online sale ends Saturday.
