Clark Howard: The best sunblock isn’t the most expensive

Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardSunscreen doesn’t have to be expensive to be effective. One brand that sells for 59 cents an ounce got a top score from Consumer Reports in the June 2012 issue. It just goes to show that you don’t have to pay big bucks to protect your skin from harsh UV rays.

The highest rated sunscreen was NO-AD (“No Advertisement,”) a practically no-name brand introduced in 1960 that “prides itself in offering twice the size product for the same price as the national brands,” according to the product’s website.

NO-AD got a score of 88 from Consumer Reports and costs only 59 cents an ounce. (In fairness, many of the sunscreens tested got ratings in the 80s, which means many of them are doing a good job protecting you. So the real question truly is cost.) To give you a comparison, a high-end, name-brand sunscreen called La Roche-Posay …

Jessica Shops: Off Broadway shoes, Yoox, Body Shop

Strappy beauty

Off Broadway: Many offices are now on the sandal bandwagon, allowing nicer styles in the workplace. I am particularly impressed with the selection at Off Broadway. My first choice is the DV by Dolce Vita Corliss strappy sandal. These are sleek and professional for work but transition to weekend wear with ease (regularly $59, on sale for $39). The Michael Shannon Abby, a neutral/metallic style, has enough of a heel to dress it up for work but enough shine for fun (above; regularly $49, on sale for $29). Jessica Shops’ AJC Atlanta Bargain Hunter readers can text “OFFER” to 34763 to receive a mobile coupon good for 20 percent off entire purchases of $40 or more (valid today-Monday in Georgia stores only).

A sneaky deal

Yoox.com: My latest online shopping secret is Yoox.com. Save as much as an extra 50 percent off spring and summer designer apparel, footwear and accessories from top brands like Valentino, Givenchy, Marni, Gucci, and more. I found an understated, …

Prices fall as retailers get ready for autumn

July is all about clearance.

Retailers next month will scramble to offload “small, piecey stuff” to clear space for autumn shipments, says Dan Butler, VP of retail operations for the National Retail Federation. Plus, “people are usually going on vacation in the summer months, so retailers really have to promote their values strongly to get their customer in the door.”

So keep your peepers peeled in July for these deals:

SLR cameras: “We’ve noticed lately there’s been a spike in the number of ‘editor’s choice’ deals [on single-lens reflex cameras] in May and June already,” says Lindsay Sakraida, features editor at consumer website DealNews.com. “We’re hoping that will continue into July. It might be a good thing to keep an eye on if you need a [late] graduation gift.”

Apparel: Look for 40 to 70 percent off spring holdovers. “Some retailers will get very aggressive and mark things down dirt cheap just to get rid of it,” Butler says.

Sandals: July introduces the best deals on …

Earning a college degree has long been something of a golden ticket, a credential that helped ensure a person’s employment and advancement prospects — but no more. College graduates are now struggling with limited job prospects and low starting pay once associated more with non-college-grads.

My advice to young people: Make your own luck. One way to do this is by taking an internship. It’s hardly an original idea, but too many interns still don’t understand how to make the most of what can be a life-changing experience. Here are some suggestions:

Do what you (might) love: Passion is key to success in any field. There are no real estate superstars who hate looking at houses; no rocket scientists who struggle with math.Choose an internship that …
