One of the first things that coupon skeptics tell me is that there are never coupons available for items they buy. If you can identify with that, then get last Sunday’s grocery coupon circulars out of the recycling bin and take a second look.
Even if you aren’t out of these everyday items most people use, you should keep an eye out for high-value coupons to use when the items go on sale. If you time it right, you’ll get the item free and when an item is free, it may become a new item that you buy.
For example, in the May 20 SmartSource circular, you’ll find a buy one, get one free coupon for Schick disposable razors, value up to $10.50, which is a bargain at any price. You’ll also find a $2 Schick Intuition razor or refill coupon, which is a common sale item.
There also is a buy one, get one free coupon for Dannon Oikos Greek nonfat yogurt (5.3 ounce). Regularly priced at $1.39, Kroger has it on sale this week for $1 each. Use the coupon, and you’ll pay 50 cents …

We are entering the season of long family road trips, which is why the return of the “Earn Free Gas” promotion at CVS/pharmacy is so timely.
To participate, sign up for the ExtraCare rewards program. Spend $30 on qualifying products, designated through the CVS circular during select weeks (not every week), and you’ll get a coupon for a $10 gas card. Turn in the coupon at CVS to get the card, which is good at any Exxon/Mobil or Shell station.
You can earn up to five gas cards ($50) per week, and if you so choose you can wait up to 30 days to redeem the coupon. The “Earn Free Gas” program continues select weeks through August.

Comcast — the nation’s largest cable operator — just reported profits of $1.2 billion over the most recent quarter, but get this: They’re doing it at a time when they’re actually losing pay TV subscribers. So where is the money coming from? They’re making the bulk of their dough on Internet and phone customers.
I’ve trashed Comcast endlessly for “customer no-service.” But they must have improved significantly, judging by the number of complaints we get about them on “The Clark Howard Show,” which have dropped off a cliff.

This is the fifth part of a series on wedding planning on a reasonable budget. I hope you will join me on this journey of orchestrating the ideal wedding — without overspending.
Since my fiancé and I met dancing, the wedding reception is a priority for us. We love cutting a rug, and although we probably won’t remember insignificant details of our wedding (like chair covers), I know we’ll remember the music.
I had originally ignored the idea of a live band at our reception, because I’m working within a below-average budget. But I realized a few months into planning that I’m actually friends with a guy in a local swing band. Would they give me a discounted rate?
I lucked out — or rather, my friend and his band are very generous. Although it’s still a significant expense, I’m paying the “friends and family” rate for my ideal wedding band.
