Wes Moss hosts 'Money Matters' Sunday mornings on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB

Georgia teachers are among the state’s richest citizens. If you’re an educator, you may chuckle at that notion, but it’s true. First, teachers derive great emotional wealth from their work, which shapes our young people and, as a result, our future.

Second, they have a killer dual-engine retirement program.

Georgia’s Teacher Retirement System (TRS) requires educators to contribute approximately 5.5 percent of their annual salary and provides a match of nearly 10 percent, meaning teachers are socking away 15 percent of their pay toward retirement without even noticing. TRS then gives teachers the opportunity to participate in their school system’s 403(b) program, which is like a 401(k). While participation in the 403(b) is not mandatory, …

Coupon Mom: Cookout items, General Mills products

One of the first things that coupon skeptics tell me is that there are never coupons available for items they buy. If you can identify with that, then get last Sunday’s grocery coupon circulars out of the recycling bin and take a second look.

Even if you aren’t out of these everyday items most people use, you should keep an eye out for high-value coupons to use when the items go on sale. If you time it right, you’ll get the item free and when an item is free, it may become a new item that you buy.

For example, in the May 20 SmartSource circular, you’ll find a buy one, get one free coupon for Schick disposable razors, value up to $10.50, which is a bargain at any price. You’ll also find a $2 Schick Intuition razor or refill coupon, which is a common sale item.

There also is a buy one, get one free coupon for Dannon Oikos Greek nonfat yogurt (5.3 ounce). Regularly priced at $1.39, Kroger has it on sale this week for $1 each. Use the coupon, and you’ll pay 50 cents …

Clark Howard: Online TV services change the market

Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardThe way you bring technology into your home for communication and entertainment is changing. And if you follow the trends, you can save big money.

Comcast — the nation’s largest cable operator — just reported profits of $1.2 billion over the most recent quarter, but get this: They’re doing it at a time when they’re actually losing pay TV subscribers. So where is the money coming from? They’re making the bulk of their dough on Internet and phone customers.

I’ve trashed Comcast endlessly for “customer no-service.” But they must have improved significantly, judging by the number of complaints we get about them on “The Clark Howard Show,” which have dropped off a cliff.

Meanwhile, the June issue of Consumer Reports rates phone service and AT&T got the lowest score of 25 companies rated for value and …

My big, fat, bargain wedding: Entertainment

My big, fat, bargain wedding: Venues | Food | Combining finances | The dress

This is the fifth part of a series on wedding planning on a reasonable budget. I hope you will join me on this journey of orchestrating the ideal wedding — without overspending.

Since my fiancé and I met dancing, the wedding reception is a priority for us. We love cutting a rug, and although we probably won’t remember insignificant details of our wedding (like chair covers), I know we’ll remember the music.

I had originally ignored the idea of a live band at our reception, because I’m working within a below-average budget. But I realized a few months into planning that I’m actually friends with a guy in a local swing band. Would they give me a discounted rate?

I lucked out — or rather, my friend and his band are very generous. Although it’s still a significant expense, I’m paying the “friends and family” rate for my ideal wedding band.

Looking back, I should have started the wedding-planning …
