Jessica Shops: Runway looks for less

Runway looks go mainstream

Macy’s, H&M, Target, Forever 21: Many retailers are incorporating top designer and celebrity inspiration to create affordable, accessible versions of runway looks. Most recently, Macy’s unveiled an Alberta Feretti collection, priced $49-$119 (her runway designs run $400-$2,500 and up). Check out the orange one-shoulder dress ($99) that’s a similar look to a red carpet version worn by Kelly Rowland. H&M also just debuted a new collection of sustainable red carpet dresses ($60-$299), already being worn by starlets like Michelle Williams. Other popular recent capsules include Jason Wu for Target ($18-$120) and Rory Beca for Forever 21 ($6-$32). These items sell out quickly and availability is subject to change.

Hard to keep up with tech advances

For you “24″ fans, above is “24: The Unaired 1994 Pilot” from CollegeHumor.com.

Traci Rylands remembers the first time she saw “Mystery Science Theater 3000” in the 1990s — and was hooked.

“I had to depend on when it came on TV,” she said. “When I saw you could buy it on tapes, I thought, ‘Whoo-hoo!’”

The Tucker resident built up a collection of MST3K store-bought VHS tapes, plus additional episodes recorded straight from TV. Now Rylands, 44, is considering rebuying all the episodes on DVD — or possibly digitally — along with her movies that still survive in the older format.

“Some things you cannot get on DVD, that they didn’t bother to make the DVD of,” she said. “So I do hold on to those. I still have the tape from my sister’s wedding and the things that you made, that your parents filmed, when you were young. And I still haven’t converted those because it can be expensive.”

Music formats have similarly evolved, from vinyl records and eight-track and cassette tapes, to …

Wes Moss: Should I buy a variable annuity for retirement?

Certified financial planner Wes Moss provides personal finance advice and accessible investment strategies. His guest post appears here weekly.

Wes Moss hosts 'Money Matters' Sunday mornings on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB

Wes Moss hosts 'Money Matters' Sunday mornings on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB

I’m constantly asked, “What about a variable annuity? I buy it and it guarantees me a steady stream of income in retirement, right?”

Yes, I am an advocate of investments that will pay you consistently once your working days are done. But I’m not convinced a variable annuity is the best tool for that job.

An annuity is a product sold by insurance companies designed to invest money from an individual and then pay out a stream of income to that investor over multiple years. A variable annuity promises a minimum return from an “income perspective” plus the possibility of a larger income stream based on how well the annuity’s investments do over time.

Understand the following before buying a variable annuity:

“Real vs. theoretical.” Most variable annuities …

Clark Howard: Options to lower prescription prices

Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardPrescription medications can either be very expensive or very cheap, depending on how you get them.

Through my insurance, I have two ways to get prescription meds. I can go through a pharmacy benefit manager, which is essentially like a mail-order pharmacy, and get a 30- to 90-day supply for very little money compared to the going rate in the marketplace. Or I can go directly to a traditional pharmacy and have my script filled at sometimes exorbitant prices.

For example, I have asthma and one script I take is $700 for a three-month supply. But I only pay $40 through my pharmacy benefit manager. That’s a big difference.

I’ve also talked in the past about trying to lower the cost of your prescriptions by printing out the list of $4 generic meds you can get on the websites of Kroger, Target, Walmart and any of a number of …
