Best things to buy in February

With our mild winter and two holidays in February, it’s an excellent month to buy a variety of goods and services.

Outerwear: Lindsay Sakraida, features director at DealNews.com, says many retailers are stuck with an overstock of heavy coats because this winter has been so warm. “It hasn’t really inspired people to go out and buy,” Sakraida says. “February is always a pretty good month to be getting a great deal on a coat, but especially this year. It sounds like retailers are really trying to push them out the door.” She suggests stacking a coupon on top of a Presidents Day sale.

iPad 2: When the iPad 2 was unveiled, the DealNews team saw deep discounts on refurbished original iPads. Now, “There’s a lot of rumors that iPad 3 will be released at the end of February, which means it will probably be a great time to start looking for deals on the iPad 2,” Sakraida says. Ski trips: “We’ve been seeing a huge …

Wes Moss hosts 'Money Matters' Sunday mornings on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB

Is gas really going to cost $5 per gallon this summer? The media seems to think so, offering up a steady stream of headlines like, “Experts predict gas prices to hit $5 a gallon” and “$5 a gallon? Analysts say it could happen.”

$5 gas would have serious ramifications not only for family budgets but also for economic recovery here in the U.S. But I don’t think it’s going to happen in 2012. Gas prices will almost certainly rise as they catch up with the recent upward drift of oil prices. But getting to $5 a gallon in Georgia would mean a 46 percent rise in prices from the current level. Based on recent history, that’s unlikely.

Between late 2006 and mid-2008, oil prices rose from around $50 per barrel to $145. Despite that 190 percent surge, gas …

Clark Howard: Don’t overpay for Android service

Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardIn one of my recent columns, I told you about a cellular service called Republic Wireless offering unlimited talk, text and web for $19 a month. But that’s for people who want a fancy Android smartphone.

Most people just want a simple phone that calls and texts. Now there’s a $12/month plan from Page Plus called “The 12,” where you get 250 voice minutes, 250 text messages and a small amount of data for very light web surfing every month — a great deal for moderate users. Visit PagePlusCellular.com for more details.

Page Plus has a number of other low-cost plans available. They tend to price a little lower than mega-competitor Straight Talk, which starts at $30/month for 1,000 texts and 1,000 voice minutes. By comparison, Page Plus’ $30/month plan bests them by offering 1,200 minutes and 3,000 text messages.

Meanwhile, …
