Save on dish soap

Gain: Gain dishwashing liquid (11 ounce) is 99 cents when you use the in-ad coupon from the Walgreens ad. Also, use the Aug. 14 RedPlum coupon for 50 cents to pay 49 cents per item. Be sure to have at least one other item in your order that doesn’t need a coupon because at Walgreens, you cannot have more coupons in your total order than items, although it is fine to use two coupons on one item as long as one is a store coupon and one is a manufacturers coupon.

I got a rude introduction to the high-price world of college textbooks when my eldest daughter was a freshman several years ago. At the time, I had to pay $135 for one book for one class!

Unfortunately, the cost of college textbooks is up 22 percent over the last four years, according to the Student Public Interest Research Groups. That’s four times the rate of inflation in the U.S. economy over the same period.

The College Board reports that the average student spends $1,137 on books for about 12 to 15 weeks before they become yesterday’s news at the end of the semester.

Thankfully, the Internet has come to the rescue by offering a number of websites like Chegg.com and Course Smart.com that rent college textbooks. (The latter even gives you digital access to textbooks on an iPhone, iPad or Android device.) Other …

Taking the family to the PGA Tour Championship can become very expensive very quickly. But bringing the kids to watch the golf greats might be too memorable an experience to pass up.

The PGA Tour Championship, held Wednesday through Sunday at East Lake Golf Club, is the finale to the FedEx Cup playoffs. And the great news is, up to four children 18 and younger can get in for free with each paying adult.

Military personnel, veterans and dependents can also receive free tickets when you show the appropriate identification. (Active-duty members must reserve tickets in advance and bring the printout in addition to military ID at the gate.)

Purchase tickets through your local Kroger store to see 100 percent of proceeds from each ticket benefit the East Lake Foundation. Visit the PGA Tour Championship website for ticket prices and more information.

These Panda Express coupons in Sunday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution caught my eye, but they weren’t in the usual coupon books. Check your coupon stack, as this offer only went out to certain areas of Atlanta. One is for a freebie tomorrow:

• Get two free Shanghai spare ribs from Panda Express tomorrow. Offer valid Wednesday only.
• Get half off a two-entree plate when you purchase a two- or three-entree plate of equal or greater value. Additional charge for shrimp entrees. One coupon per person per purchase. Valid through Oct. 29.

Just out of curiosity, are there any of you who didn’t get these coupons who would have used them? Typically businesses will target slices of Atlanta when their stores don’t blanket the area, and I wonder how accurate their estimations are.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Whoever said that must not live in Atlanta. In the last month alone, we’ve been tempted with a range of free items, including breakfast at Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s coffee, King of Pops treats, kids’ meals at Moe’s, Arby’s sandwiches, Ted’s Montana Grill cookies and appetizers at Marlow’s Tavern. (And most recently, BOGO Happy Meals.) OK, most of these aren’t literally a free lunch, though what you get from these promotions is clear.

But what do the businesses get?

“Over a long period of time, we hope to keep our customers who love our product, and win customers who weren’t familiar with it,” says Robin Lomax, the Atlanta area marketing director for Chick-fil-A, who spearheaded the chain’s Great Tea Giveaway this summer. “There is expectation that we will hopefully see increased tea sales.”

The new Happy Meal

If you don’t associate McDonald’s with a healthy serving of fruit, the fast-food restaurant is bribing you to change your mind.

The international chain is using Atlanta as a test market for its brand-new Happy Meal, which features apple slices and a smaller-sized fry in every box. This week local McDonald’s restaurants will host a “Happy Meal Happy Hour” from 2-7 p.m. each day through Thursday, featuring a buy one, get one free deal on all Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals.

The new Happy Meal includes a choice of chicken McNuggets, a hamburger or cheeseburger; a choice of beverage including fat-free chocolate milk, 1 percent white milk, apple juice or soda; apple slices and a smaller serving of french fries. You can also request another bag of apples instead of the fries.

The new Happy Meal ranges from 410 to 550 calories (this estimate assumes you order one of the milk options and don’t sub out the fries for another serving of apples).
