The new Happy Meal

The new Happy Meal

If you don’t associate McDonald’s with a healthy serving of fruit, the fast-food restaurant is bribing you to change your mind.

The international chain is using Atlanta as a test market for its brand-new Happy Meal, which features apple slices and a smaller-sized fry in every box. This week local McDonald’s restaurants will host a “Happy Meal Happy Hour” from 2-7 p.m. each day through Thursday, featuring a buy one, get one free deal on all Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals.

The new Happy Meal includes a choice of chicken McNuggets, a hamburger or cheeseburger; a choice of beverage including fat-free chocolate milk, 1 percent white milk, apple juice or soda; apple slices and a smaller serving of french fries. You can also request another bag of apples instead of the fries.

The new Happy Meal ranges from 410 to 550 calories (this estimate assumes you order one of the milk options and don’t sub out the fries for another serving of apples).

McDonald’s has been offering apples as a requested Happy Meal choice since 2004, and while recent research found that 88 percent of McDonald’s customers are aware of the option, only 11 percent choose apples.

I never had a problem allowing my little one a happy meal because she always got the apple slices along with the apple juice box. Them adding a mini-fry (about half the size of a small) is just a bonus. She paid very little attention to it. However… it seems like the package size of the apple shrunk a little bit too. I can’t prove it, but it looks off. I’m thinkin they reduced the size of the apple slices in order to off set the cost of adding the mini fry.

Oh well, I’m still happy getting this for my little one about once a month.

note to ajc family:

“Oh well, I’m still happy getting this for my little one about once a month.”

Yeah, like I believe that. If you didn’t feel like you needed to qualify it you wouldn’t have mentioned the frequency at all. Deep down you are probably a lazy parent but have convinced yourself otherwise.

Now Sid! You know that was just plain rude! You have no idea what type of parent that woman is and you come off as judgmental and ignorant by attempting to pretend that you do.

It’s not that big of a deal unless you feed your kid fast food every night of the week!! I mean come on.. having a Happy Meal 2 or even 3 times a MONTH is NOT gonna kill anyone. Besides… what is childhood without the experience of McDonald’s every once in a while? LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE!!!

Sid – what’s with the rudeness?? “Deep down you are probably a lazy parent but have convinced yourself otherwise.” What are you basing that on? The fact that she takes her kid to McDonalds?? If everyone started being a little nicer to one another and actually applied some manners instead of being so rude and critical the world would be a much nicer place. Hiding behind a screen is surely bringing out the worst in people, who aren’t perfect themselves to begin with!!

@ Sid

You’re right. I have no problem taking my kid more than once a month. But the main reason my kid likes the happy meal is the toy. There’s no point on taking her several times a month since she’d be disappointed that she’s getting the same toy as the last time we went. Going once a month is a way to be sure she’s getting a different toy than the last time. See, Sid, the food isn’t what makes the meal ‘happy’, its all about the toy. So for YOUR peace of mind, I didn’t say ‘once a month’ in order for your approval…. I don’t seek your approval. I also don’t judge others. I would NOT be ashamed if I went more than once and I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with or judge a parent that went more than that.

You sir, are a loser.

Is Atlanta considered all 13 metro counties for the test market? Anyone know ?

I cannot believe that some people can judge a parent’s ability to parent based on frequency they state they go to McDonald’s for their kid. I know that in the past I have taken my kids for the toys, they usually do not eat the meal, as they do not care for it. I do not eat it, as I do not have a gallbladder and cannot process fatty foods. I have never been able to, so I guess it is good for me. But, to judge me as I go for the toys, is that a crime? This is a free country last time I checked and also a country based on free will. I would say at least they are trying. I do not see others doing the same. Also, no we do not eat fast food every night, as I am lucky enough to stay at home and cook meals for my kids nightly. I guess since I admitted I take my kids to McDonald’s periodically for toys I too am a bad parent. Heck, I would get a Happy Meal if they brought back the jelly glasses with Star Wars and other cool stuff from when we were kids, and our parents made us eat all of it, as there were starving kids in Ethiopia!
Curious, Sid, do you even have kids, if so, how old? Until you know, never judge. Shame on you!

@onechris: A McDonald’s rep says all greater Atlanta area McD’s are offering the deal.

I’m fine with McDees doing this – ie as an option. That should get that hypocritical first lady off their back. Next up, Darden! Enjoy that 2000 calorie meal, Michelle, as you fuss at the people who make it.

As an adult who buys the McDonald’s Happy Meal from time to time, I thought that any change they needed to make would have been to add an option to have lettuce and tomato on the burger. It was a decent size serving of fries that was perfect for me and within my calorie range if I had a taste for burger and fries.

I ordered a Happy Meal for me because it is a lot less food. The apples slice package is smaller. I asked for fries and got both a tiny fry and apples.

Once again weak knee people who do not have a set big enough to tell their little darlings no, expect a major corporation to change their operating procedures to suit them. Got a better idea, just like smoking in a restaurant, if you are against it DON’T GO TO IT

I am not ashamed to admit that I take my daughter to McDonalds between 3-4 per month. Why? Because she likes it and we have Girl Scouts every Wednesday night where I am the Troop leader. Therefore, I do not have time to leave work, pick up two kids and cook dinner to be at the Troop meeting by 6:30. So if that makes me a lazy parent, oh well!
