Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ClarkHowardIncreases in the price you pay for food at the supermarket are expected to keep coming, but I’ve got some strategies to help you stretch your grocery dollar.

Many of you probably know that corn is the epicenter of so much to do with the food that winds up in supermarket aisles. Unfortunately, the corn harvest has been smaller than expected and wholesale prices are up by nearly 70 percent over the past year.

That means continued higher prices into next year for many things you buy. So it’s more important than ever for you to be smarter when you’re shopping for food. Here are a few suggestions:

● Use non-traditional channels like warehouse clubs for buying food. Just know that sometimes a deal is not a deal if the package you’re buying is too big for you or your family and it goes stale or spoils before its time.

● Become …

Jessica Shops: wellness deals, coat sales and bridal swag

Balance your life

iRenew: We could all use a daily reminder to take care of ourselves. That’s why I’m loving the iRenew wellness bracelet. Not only is it trendy among celebrities such as Maria Menounos, but studies show this “balance bracelet” technology may help support strength, balance and endurance when you wear it. Whether you need strength at work, play, or in my case, while shopping, there is a color just for you. I prefer the look of stacking them on one arm. They make great gifts, too. Receive 25 percent off when you buy online using the code JessicaShops.com (regularly $19.99; valid through Oct. 31).

Snuggle up with  a discounted coat

The Outnet: It’s coat time at The Outnet, an online fashion outlet now with deep discounts on a variety of designer coats. Find styles from Emanuel Ungaro, Calvin Klein, Moschino and Stella McCartney, among others, all marked down 60 percent-70 percent (sale prices now start at around $200 for a $660 coat).

A bridal party

Develop strategy to land college scholarships

It seems the kids just went back to school and all of a sudden — Bam! — time to hunt for college scholarships.

Here’s the rub: Students need to apply for some scholarships before they have a good idea of all the costs going to college entails.

Each school is required by law to post a net price calculator on its website by Oct. 29 this year, helping families estimate the full cost of four years in college. Some applications for merit-based scholarships, however, are due as early as Saturday, especially some that are more prestigious or competitive. And there might be a lot of work involved: essays, recommendations from teachers and counselors, plus gathering transcripts and multiple test scores.

But a little preparation today can prevent you from missing a lot of deadlines tomorrow. Some tips from local area guidance counselors:

Strategize: One option is to get out of town. And state. And region. Colleges typically try to maintain regional diversity, so selecting a school far …

Your local ice cream shop is granting your wish for free ice cream — and hoping that in return you’ll support someone else’s dreams coming true.

This month Coldstone Creamery partners with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to support children with life-threatening diseases. Wes Moss: Weather market turmoil with investment dividends

Certified financial planner Wes Moss provides personal finance advice and accessible investment strategies. His guest post appears here weekly.

Wes-Moss-032011-USE-THIS-VERSION

Wes Moss hosts 'Money Matters' Sunday mornings on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB

Are you suffering from financial crisis fatigue? If so, that’s understandable. Over the past decade, we’ve watched any number of highly touted investment vehicles soar to breathtaking heights before crashing to earth like a scorched piece of space junk.

Some of the most spectacular flame-outs since the year 2000:

  • Tech: stocks lost 80 percent
  • Housing: prices down 35 percent, new home sales down 80 percent
  • Emerging markets: The emerging market index ETF (EEM) lost 63 percent
  • Oil: down from $147 to $38 per barrel, a 74 percent drop

And the potential hits just keep on comin’. Gold dropped sharply last week. Bonds are also vulnerable, as prices have surged and interest rates (which move inversely to prices) have dropped to levels not seen since the …
