Consumer expert Clark Howard’s column appears here each Thursday in conjunction with Deal Spotter, a weekly print section in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

With big wireless carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all having data caps in place, being a data hog on your smartphone can really affect your wallet. (Sprint is the only one of the bigs still out there doing unlimited data at the moment.)

If data use is a problem for you, you could make the switch to a cheaper no-contract carrier that offers unlimited data. But not everybody wants to make that leap.

So what’s a dedicated smartphone user to do? I recently discovered something I already use helps my smartphone to sip data instead of guzzling it.

A tech writer for The New York Times recently ran a story that says Opera Mini, a popular free European mobile browser, reduces data consumption by 90 percent so you can dramatically stretch your data plan.

Have you ever been kicked off a flight because the airline overbooked it?

Effective Tuesday, bumped travelers are now eligible to receive twice as much money as they were before, according to Kelly Yamanouchi’s story on ajc.com. You could be reimbursed up to $1,300 depending on how much you originally paid for your ticket and how long you have to wait to hop another flight.

More from the story about the new regulations:

• Involuntarily bumped passengers are entitled to cash compensation equal to double the one-way value of their tickets, up to $650, if the airline was able to get them to their destination within a short period of time (within one to two hours of their originally scheduled arrival time for domestic flights and one to four hours for international flights).

• Passengers delayed for a lengthy period of time (more than two hours after their originally scheduled arrival time for domestic flights and 4 hours for international flights) are entitled to four times the …

You’ve heard the buzz. Maybe you’ve even heard friends and family chattering about it. With the price of gold soaring to more than $1,900 per ounce Monday, selling your old jewelry is a way to get back some of that money the roller-coaster stock market’s been taking away.

But before you scrounge up all the gold jewelry you’re willing to “scrap” — sell purely for its gold content, by weight — hold on just a bit. I did my own test run to give you some tips on getting the best prices.

First, I rounded up a mix of 14- and 18-karat jewelry and took it to three different types of places: a “we buy gold” business, a jewelry store and an antique market’s gold and coin dealer. Each gave me a weight total for my gold and how much money I could expect to get for it. And their quotes in each category varied drastically.
