Cars, TVs, home goods among best buys for September

Flat Screen TVKeep your eyes peeled in September for seasonal sales as well as unusual clearances.

New cars: Conventional wisdom has been that the end of the model year is the best time to buy, as dealers try to sell off old merchandise to make room for the new.

“If you are in love with a particular model, you can find it in the color and with the equipment you want,” says Jack Nerad, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “There are probably great Labor Day specials all over the place.”

You’ve probably been advised to consider depreciation in value when buying a car that’s already nearly a year old. But Nerad says depreciation isn’t as important “if you’re going to keep it forever.” Plus, with low interest rates, you’ll be able to pay less over the life of a car loan than in previous years.

Car accessories: Looking to pimp that ride, whether it’s new or used?

“There’s an increase in deals on auto goods in September, particularly in the first …

Facebook gives up on deals

It probably won’t come as a surprise to metro Atlantans: Facebook is ending its “deals” program.

The daily-deal type offerings promoted spas, horseback riding trips and the typical restaurant discounts — many times for large groups of people — through the current Facebook platform.

Although Facebook hasn’t announced a reason for dumping “deals,” speculation includes consumer deal fatigue. When I wrote a column on Facebook in May, I had trouble finding anyone who’d actually bought a Facebook deal here in Atlanta, one of the five test markets.

According to media sources, the demise of “deals” won’t affect Facebook’s location-based “check-in deals.”

What’s your go-to daily deal source? Are there any underdogs you think offer better discounts?

Wes Moss: Now’s the time to rebalance

Certified financial planner Wes Moss provides personal finance advice and accessible investment strategies. His guest post appears here Monday mornings.

Wes-Moss-032011-USE-THIS-VERSION

It turns out all that glitters might not be gold. As stocks tumbled in recent weeks, gold has skyrocketed to new highs. But last week the super-hyped yellow stuff fell by more than 10 percent in just three days.

No surprise after a relentless run up, as nearly every market trend that skyrockets without interruption eventually falls back to earth, especially those not powered by earnings –- things like commodities, spec condos and Internet companies that haven’t generated a profit. (Remember Pets.com?)

So what’s the right strategy for navigating the kind of turmoil we’ve seen in the market? The first critical step is to keep your head. Don’t panic and sell otherwise solid stocks that have been caught in a general down draft. Step two: take advantage of the situation and snap up more shares of quality companies …
