Whitewater rafting deals

If you follow any of the deal sites in town, you know there’s been a slew of whitewater rafting specials lately. They’ll save you a ton of money on an out-of-the-ordinary adventure — and you’ll thank yourself when it’s 95 degrees outside. Plus, it’s a great date idea if you’re sick of the dinner-and-a-movie combo. Here are just a few available today.

  • LivingSocial: Try a middle-river rafting trip beginning in Benton, Tenn. for just $20 (reg. $46). The Outdoor Adventure Rafting trip consists of about one and a half hours on the water.
  • Sweet Jack: Same deal as above, but if you and your friends are truly adventurous choose the full-day version ($40 and three hours of river time) from Sweet Jack.
  • Half Off Depot: Or charge the rapids with Adventures Unlimited in Ocoee, Tenn. For only $20 (reg. $53) you’ll get a 3.5 hour trip (2 hours on the water). Blackout dates for this deal include July 16, 23, 24, 30, 31, Aug. 6 and Sept. 4.

How are you paying for college?

The college acceptance letters are out, students have switched their tassels to the opposite side of their mortar boards and the race is on to find dorm room necessities.

But the toughest challenge might still be unresolved: How are you paying for college?

Whether you’re a student paying your own way or an involved parent who’s bridging the gap for your kid, putting the pieces of financial aid and personal income together for an undergraduate education can be taxing.

According to an article from Kiplinger, the average debt at graduation is $24,000 — enough to permanently screw up your credit score if you don’t have a plan to pay it off. Fortunately there’s more than one way to find the money you need. Here are just a few options:

  • Get a job: Working while in college (or even during the summers) can make a huge dent in that bill.
  • Get a university job: A teaching assistant position in your field of study can reinforce your foundation as well as extra cash to pay down that debt. …

Shop now for college dorm room

Your high school graduate has already received her college acceptance letter. During the next few weeks she’ll receive information from her college on orientation and housing — so it’s time to start thinking about dorm room necessities.

Some items you can wait to purchase if you’re dropping your student off in another city. For example, you’ll want to measure closet and floor space before purchasing organizers.

But for other items, shop this summer when stores put dorm room staples — extra-long twin bedroom sets, desk lamps, shower caddies — on sale. Plus, retailers in college towns will be overrun come August, so don’t expect to waltz in and have your choice of, say, area rugs.

Dan Morrison, director for Residence Life at Georgia Tech, and Shay Little, director of Administrative Services and Communications at the University of Georgia, share their tips on what to bring and what’s a waste of money:

Cheap, but practical

Wes Moss: Why gas prices take so long to drop

Certified financial planner Wes Moss provides personal finance advice and accessible investment strategies. His guest post appears here Monday mornings.

Wes-Moss-032011-USE-THIS-VERSIONOil prices fell roughly 15 percent in early May, from nearly $115 per barrel to less than $100, where they remain.

The price of gas correlates directly with the price of oil — nearly 70 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline is oil. So why haven’t we seen a significant drop in gas prices in the wake of oil’s price tumble? And why does it always seem gas prices spike up with oil prices, but only slowly fall when the price of oil retreats?

Consider these factors:

1. Gas station owners make very little profit from selling gas. They may mark it up by 10 cents a gallon, but after such costs as employee salaries, rent/mortgage payments and credit card fees, their profit may be only 2 cents per gallon. If the average station pumps about 4,000 gallons daily, that’s just 80 bucks of gas profits for an entire day.

The …
