“Pursuit of Happyness” author Gardner gives free financial seminar

Chris Gardner, author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker

Chris Gardner, author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker

The New York City subway would ordinarily be  sparse at 1 p.m. on a weekday, but this time, it was packed. Chris Gardner said he found himself surrounded by men and women among the first wave of those laid off from a major corporation.

“They had to go home and tell their husbands, wives and the banks that they don’t have a job,” said Gardner.

The acclaimed author of “The Pursuit of Happyness,” Gardner’s story was portrayed in the movie by award-winning actor Will Smith. However, it was that moment on the train that sparked his latest book, “Start Where You Are: Life Lessons in Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.”

Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the brokerage firm Gardner Rich LLC, Gardner will present a free interactive financial seminar sponsored by MasterCard on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. From homelessness to millionaire entrepreneur, Gardner’s inspiring journey is …

Financial planning helps develop a “personalized strategy”

danielIn honor of National Financial Planning Week Oct. 4-9, certified financial planner James Daniel of  The Advisory Firm wanted to dedicate this column to myths, misconceptions and realities about Financial Planning.

Q:  Isn’t financial planning something that only rich people need?

A: That is a great question.  It is very easy to feel that way when you think about Wall Street and terms such as “Wealth Manager” and “Private Banker”.  However, the truth is financial planning is about setting financial goals and building your own personalized strategy for the future.  It matters not if you have $10,000 or $10 Million.  All that is required is a desire to make smarter money decisions, the ability to set some financial goals and the discipline to act on it.

Q:  If a financial plan works for everyone, what exactly does it cover?

A: Think about it this way, the typical person has many pieces of their financial puzzle scattered about:  a couple of old 401k’s, a few …

How to shop for a good gas deal

All it takes is a little nip in the air to change the climate in your home — and change the cost of your heating bill. Before matters get bad, it’s probably time for a weatherizing check-in.

The cost of heating a house is a bit less expensive these days than in the recent past due to lower natural gas prices. Still, no one can afford to lose money and waste energy by letting leaky doors and windows go unattended.

Here is a D.I.Y. project — How to weatherize doors and windows. It’s very easy and inexpensive, too.

1. Measure the area of the door or window where you’ll be installing the weatherstripping.

2. Thoroughly clean and completely dry the surface. Using cushion-vinyl or spring-metal stripping purchased from a local home improvement store and cut the strips to proper length.

3. Apply the stripping to the latch-side, hinge-side and door jamb.

Perhaps the best demonstration of the technique needed can be found on Bobvila.com.

If there is a significant gap at the bottom of …

Caring for aging parents takes careful preparation

Lee Baker calls it a “personal double-whammy.”

Twice he has seen his role change from son to caregiver of his parents. His mother, 95, lives in Jacksonville, Fla. She is living with Alzheimer’s, the same disease his father fought before he died. A certified financial planner in Stone Mountain, Baker has plenty of real-world experience to share with his clients as he advises them through similar travails.

According to the 2009 Caregiving in the United States report, the average age of today’s caregiver is 49 and the average age of today’s care recipient is 69. Distance between parents and their adult children, combined with economic forces, have combined to exacerbate what is often an extremely difficult situation.

“My experience has benefited some of my clients,” said Baker, of Apex Financial Services. “I use my experience to help put them in a better position.”

Baker also uses the Family Love Letter, a plan designed by Jeff Scroggin of Roswell to help families …

What Southwest buying AirTran means for passengers

So, which is better, Southwest Airlines or AirTran Airways? That may depend on what you consider “better.” Prices. Customer service. Convenience. Here’s a guide that may help you decide:

Q: Which airline is cheaper?

A: Southwest Airlines keeps its costs low because of its “on the ground efficiency,” said Clark Howard, consumer advocate and AM 750 and now 95.5FM News/Talk WSB radio host. Over a longer flight, that costs savings disappears in favor of AirTran, Howard said.

Q: Does this mean baggage fees go away?

A: Southwest does not charge anything for the first two checked bags. AirTran charges $20 for the first checked bag, and $25 for the second.

Q: What about other fees?

A: One of the best fee comparative websites is TruPrice.net.

Southwest:

Pets in cabin $75; Pets as cargo: $0; Unaccompanied minor: $50

AirTran:

Pets in cabin: $65; Pets as cargo: $0; Unaccompanied minor: $49

Delta:

Pets in cabin: $125; Pets as cargo: $200; Unaccompanied minor: $100

Q: Will I have a seat …
