Atlanta home services deal site fills void in bargain industry

Sarah Huttu uses popular collective buying sites like Groupon and Living Social to get deals on restaurants and other forms of entertainment.

But, when it came to increasing her exposure as a professional artist, she quickly learned that type of marketing environment would not serve her well. Deal sites have delivered well on spa treatments and family fun, but not on the more essential home services like landscaping, pressure washing and interior painting. That’s a void Atlanta-based Living Space Deals, which launched June 1, hopes to fill.

Huttu turned there to create a buzz around her business. Instead of sharing half her profits with a gallery, or selling one piece at an arts festival, she used a 65 percent discount — or $125 off — on Living Space Deals to attract four clients and …

Financial burden eased for low-income college students

The average college graduate carries a student loan burden of $21,000, according to the Project on Student Debt. That’s considerably more than Jillian Wilms and her single mother could ever afford.

For students like Wilms, academic stalwarts from families whose income falls below the poverty line, the towering expense of higher education is intimidating, if not impossible. Georgia high school students have relied upon the HOPE scholarship to ease the load, but there are other options available exclusively for those representing low-income households.

At Georgia Tech, where Wilms is a rising junior, it’s called the Tech Promise. Since its inception in 2007-2008, 366 students from families with an annual income of $33,300 or less have received a financial aid package that includes a combination of grants, scholarships and work study programs — and no student loans. Of those, 93 have graduated. This fall, 71 more will be brought in under the Tech Promise umbrella. …

This is applicable to lenders, insurance companies, landlords and retailers. So, if you apply for insurance and you’re told no, the insurance company must provide you with the score it used in making its decision. This gives the consumer greater insight and makes the lenders more transparent.

“It completely takes the guess work out of it,” said John Ulzheimer of

Mortgage lenders: Fraudulent loans may not be a thing of the past, but they just become more difficult to pull off. That’s because lenders must now verify the borrower’s ability to repay the loan. If lenders do not comply, they will face heavy penalties.

“It will …
