10 tips for bartering and swapping for things you want

The very idea of swapping my home, as humble as it may be, for someone else’s in some exotic far-away place that I wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise is unnerving. I don’t think I could do it.

But if it’s a risk you’re comfortable with, it’s just one of several bartering and swapping opportunities that could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Perhaps you’re willing to pet sit for your neighbor in exchange for a little yard work when you need it?

Or, maybe you have clothes or household items that you can exchange for other things you need around the house? The opportunities are endless.

A local computer store contacted my husband, a plumber, about needing some plumbing work done. The business was solvent, but the owner had a lot of money tied up in inventory and not a lot of ready cash. He told my husband up-front that this was the case and asked if he would be willing to barter. He ended up trading a new computer & monitor for the plumbing work. Our old home computer had just crashed, so it was definitely win-win.

My best bartering experience was with and on BarterQuest (www.barterquest.com) so far at the end of last year. Offered my Web Design service and got a brand new Apple Mac Book in exchange. Actually the trade was a multi party trade with 3 people involved. Everything went fine. Seems that the site really can manage the matching between more than two people effectively.

Changes to our economy has seen the concept evolve quickly. I brought a couple of T.V.’s recently at BestBuys and I started having flashbacks of past experiences on used car lots. That would have been alien just a few years ago. Yep, I haven’t done much bartering, except down there in Mexico.
