Home remodeling the smarter choice for some

When the huge truck hauling a dumpster pulled up to the house across the street from me, I feared the worst. Another foreclosure; a sad sign for my neighbor and for my home value.

As it turns out, she was preparing for a remodeling project. I was relieved and in truth, perhaps I should not have been surprised. The cost of moving to a bigger home is more expensive these days because home equities are shot. The amount of money one could potentially be forced to bring to the closing table is staggering. In many cases, it makes more sense to upgrade existing space to make it more comfortable and increase value for when the market gets its legs back.

Annual spending on remodeling homes is expected to pick up this year with a nearly 5 percent growth over 2009, according to a survey cited in the Wall Street Journal.

Nowadays, say real-estate agents and contractors, smaller projects like updating kitchens and baths and humble attic-bedroom conversions are more popular, while …

Online coupons give and take, saving customers money while tracking personal info

As a consumer, it’s nice to know a retailer is paying close attention to your needs and wants. Who doesn’t want to feel valued as a shopper?

While there are few bones to pick with that, there may be one when you understand the lengths retailers and manufacturers go in order to find out what your desires are. Those online coupons that can be printed out or loaded onto your mobile phone are also used to compile data about who you are, where you shop, when you shop, how much you spend and more, according to this New York Times article.

This is not meant to dissuade you from using online coupons. However, you should know that while you’re getting a discount when the bar code is scanned, you’re giving information as well, like your Internet address, Facebook page information and shopping habits. That information is shared with retailers to help them better understand their shoppers and market to them.

Using coupons to link Internet behavior with in-store shopping lets retailers …

Credit card companies haven’t bitten back — yet

We were fearful of what credit card companies might do in response to sweeping, consumer-friendly regulations that came down the pike in February.

So far, not much, according to a Bankrate.com survey of the 50 largest card issuers conducted April 1-8. The company compared the fees on 73 of the most basic cards. Of those, 33 were issued by credit unions and 40 by banks. Of the 73, only 12 had a fixed interest rate.

Only a few have implemented the dreaded inactivity fee or annual fees.

“The good news is we’re not seeing that yet,” McBride said. “But we’re still in the first inning.”

Here’s a glimpse at the breakdown:

Inactivity Fees

Three banks charged inactivity fees, and none of the credit cards did. However, the threat of closure of accounts of non-use may be higher. The range of inactivity before closure was between a few months and three years.

Annual Fees

Five of the 73 surveyed charged annual fees. Since there are so many options that do not have annual fees, you’d be …

The Gwinnett Braves season was a fun one for fans in the area last season. I made it up to a game and loved it. I’m definitely going again and will likely use the Minor League baseball buy one, get one free ticket offer available every Tuesday at minor league parks around the country. All you have to do is bring a Kraft Singles wrapper to the ticket booth. I have no idea what they actually do with the things, but at least you get a free ticket out of it. The offer is valid for games through Sept. 7.

Customers of Gas South have a deal offer, too. It’s buy one ticket, get one free for home games Sundays through Thursdays when you use promo code GASSOUTH while purchasing tickets. The offer cannot be used July 4.

Local deal site targets customers with “green” interests on Earth Day and beyond

Collective buying power giant Groupon is expanding its reach further into the deal hunting consciousness. Landing in metro Atlanta in July, Groupon has only gotten bigger since with a presence in more than 50 cities.

Initial investors just sold a $135 million portion of their stock to Russian Internet investment group, Digital Sky Technologies, and Battery Ventures. While Groupon reaches higher and wider, local deal sites are creating their own niche.

One, in particular, has carved out a corner of the market with discounts offered only to customers of establishments that meet the website’s “green” standards. It’s called The Green Half, formerly Half Off Green, and it marries greener businesses with eco-minded consumers.

In this case, green represents a rainbow of distinctions — organic food and materials, recycling efforts and energy and water conservation practices, to name a few.

“There is no other way I can personally do it than to have my values ingrained in …
