“The Lightning Thief” author gives free talk
My fourth grade niece stayed up late and woke up early to read “Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief.” And when the movie came out, she was full of excitement, as were many other children her age. As she fancies herself a writer, she would be delighted to meet the author of the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Rick Riordan. Hosted by Emory’s Carlos Museum and Decatur’s Little Shop of Stories, he’ll be at the Glenn Auditorium on May 7 to discuss his new series, The Kane Chronicles. The first book in the series, The Red Pyramid, will be available in stores May 4. The event is free and doors open at 6 p.m.
The Atlanta community is invited to the Bookshop or the Little Shop of Stories on the square in Decatur before the close of business on May 4 to enter a raffle to win a tour of the Carlos Museum with Riordan and special reserved seating at the talk. Names will be drawn on May 5 and winners will be notified by phone or email. The tour will take place on May 7 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. No purchase is necessary to enter. Also, he will sign his new book for those who’ve purchased it from one of these shops and has a receipt.

Let this be your reminder of two other ice cream freebies this week. On Wednesday, April 28, get a scoop of ice cream from Baskin Robins for 31 cents from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. The event will support the National Fallen Firefighters Association.

50% off at Yoreka
Tip of the hat to Atlanta on the Cheap for finding this deal for Yoreka, located in The Prado on Roswell Road. Through May 12, save 50 percent on frozen yogurt when you visit between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays.
I rarely mention beauty salon specials in the blog, but this one at Natural Hair Rocks in Fayetteville is particularly good. It’s specifically for the recently unemployed who are seeking employment. For $15, get an entire makeover — shampoo and style, basic haircut, eyebrow arch and stimulating scalp massage. All you have to do is present proof of unemployment.
