Activites free for kids this weekend: Craft workshop | Train expo | Thrashers game | plus more…

Want to have some fun with your kids this weekend? Here are a few events that are absolutely free. Sure, you can go to the park, play outside or go to a movie. You can also put a twist on your routine with these fun and, did I say FREE, activities.

Free Home Depot Kids Workshop

A friend of mine told me her son is always messing around with screwdrivers, trying to stick them in light sockets, door knobs and anywhere else he deems appropriate. He’s a fan of the Handy Manny cartoon and always wants to fix things. Well, he’s a little young for that, but if you have a child who is old enough to handle simple crafts, he or she may enjoy the Home Depot Kids Workshops, held the first Saturday of every month in the stores and designed for children ages 5 to 12. Kids work on projects like building a window birdhouse, making fire trucks and creating bughouses. The projects differ each month, but the fun is the same. The workshops are free and are held from 9 a.m. to noon at every Home Depot store. Lowe’s holds Build and Grow Workshops on select Saturdays as well.

Great Train Expo

Kids are free this weekend at the Great Train Expo taking place at the North Atlanta Trade Center. They’ll see huge operating model railroads and there will be trains that kids can run and ride. Admission is $7 for adults. The event is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The North Atlanta Trade Center is located at 1700 Jeurgens Court in Norcross.

Kids Free at Thrashers game

Kids 12 and under get in free to the Sunday, March 7 Atlanta Thrashers game against the Carolina Hurricanes with the purchase of an adult ticket. It’s one of two remaining Kid’s Days — the other is March 14 against Phoenix. The Atlanta Hawks have the same Kid’s Free deal for the March 21 game against the San Antonio Spurs and March 28 against the Indiana Pacers.

Imagine It! Children’s Museum Free on Tuesday

Admission is free to all visitors after 1 p.m. at the Imagine It! Children’s Museum on Tuesday, March 9. The museum will close at 7 p.m. and tickets are given out on a first come, first served basis as museum capacity allows.

Do you often look for free activities for your children to participate in? Does the anxiety of high costs keep you from exposing your children to different activities? Or, do you find yourself doing the same activities over and over?

@JJ, Well, darn. That’s too bad. Sounded like a great event. I just removed it to avoid any confusion. That happened quickly. The event (Kids@Kollege) is still a week away at Georgia Tech.
