Frugal cooking wisdom from the Great Depression

Clara Cannucciari knows about hard times, having grown up in the Great Depression. At age 94, she has become a YouTube sensation. Cannucciari has a blog, a Facebook account, and an online cooking show, “Great Depression Cooking With Clara,” that has attracted nearly 2 million visitors. Plus, she now has a cookbook, “Clara’s Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories, and Recipes from the Great Depression.”

Featured in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she is sharing her secrets of longevity, healthy eating and frugal living. Cannucciari, who worked with her grandson Christopher to bring her lifetime of wisdom to America’s table, is not a gourmet cook. In fact, her meals are simple and inexpensive — pasta and peas, Poorman’s Feast and egg drop soup, for instance. She also sprinkles in memories of her childhood along with kitchen essentials.

The Cherokee County Master Gardeners will present the Wonderful World of Roses on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The seminar is free and will offer ideas on how to make them flourish in your garden. The event will be held at the Hickory Flat Public Library. The Roswell Garden Club will hold a similar seminar on Jan. 26 with a speaker discussing the different variations of roses from 10 a.m.-noon. It is …
