This list of Cheap Date Ideas is a tip of the hat to all of you who regularly point us in the right direction for dates that won’t break our budgets. I’m always on the hunt for new and interesting things to do in the area, particularly if they are inexpensive. Every week we bring you a list of date ideas that cost $40 or less. Many times, they are free. Yes, you can stay at home and make a romantic dinner, or go walking in the park. We have no problems with that at all. But, if you want to actually go to a venue or event, you can do that as well and still hold on to your spare change.
Churchill Grounds, the nice jazz spot you’ve driven by dozens of times next to the Fox Theatre but perhaps have never paid attention to has an admission fee that will get you in the door: You get in for just $7 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, although there is a $5 drink minimum. Yes, there are other weeknight options around town for less, but there aren’t many places as classy as this one, and certainly not many that deliver the music and the ambiance at an affordable price.
There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to stir up some passion. Ladies, if you happen to win your video game against your man, don’t gloat about it and make sure to let him win the next one. Rules of the game aside, head to Dave & Busters on Wednesday nights for half-off games. It’s not hard for $40 to get away from you at an arcade, so keep a close eye on your money. Still, at half price, you have more leeway than you would ordinarily and you’re sure to have a good time.
Laughter, like air and water, should be free. However, I can and do appreciate the skills of today’s funniest comedians and so, I’m willing to bend a little. There are comedy nights at various venues, and many have specials. I’ve shared quite a few about Punchline Comedy Club (half price using promo code Laff10 Thursday and Sunday) and the Laughing Skull Lounge ($5 off general admission seats for any show this weekend using promo code Glass). This week, I’ll hip you to another: For $10 on Thursday nights, Taboo 2 in Sandy Springs holds comedy night. At that price, you can get your laugh on and still have money left for food, too.
You’ve got to like the sound of this movie title: “Fireproof.” It’s about building a marriage that will stand the test of time. This might the best ‘date’ idea I’ve had yet. It’s free, and being shown at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, at Roswell United Methodist Church. A couples’ dinner is available afterward for $6 each. Plus, there is free childcare available.
Winter Wine Tasting
Try some great winter red wines at The Mercantile along with hearty cheeses. You and your partner can also learn more about wineries that produce wines for under $15. How much for this delightful Saturday afternoon on Jan. 30 from noon until 2 p.m.? It’s free. That’s a deal impossible to beat. Among the wines you’ll sample include Chilean Carmenere Reserva, Cote du Rhone blends and more.
